Glad yellowman is back... but I have no idea where that is, it looks like foot tracks and not tire tracks on the trail

This is one of "the most popular trails in Bend". Famous might be a better description. There was a big crash here a few years back. She lost control coming down this section and hit a tree on the right side of this picture. Medivac'd out only to recover and win a the state Championship.

I can throw out hints since I am 150 miles away with no chance of transporting YM to a new location....

Other threads have referred to this trail as "Classic"

I know where this is. I assume someone will grab him before this weekend, but if not I'll pack YMII to higher ground Saturday morning.

Never heard about the accident ref'd above. Who was that? Also, is this the section of trail Willem was having maintenance issues with?

Ok, the spot just clicked, I've launched that little rock bit in the middle dozens of times usually see it from the descending angles. Not off work until Thursday or Friday so somebody go grab the little fella and bring him to higher ground

Is that seriously right up the middle of the canyon? If it's where I think it is, it looks totally different in this photo than from on a bike.

I'm going up there this afternoon, whether the little dude is there or not.

Little guy hitched a ride with me for a bit. He wanted to head toward water, but when I stopped along the way, I looked back and he was off climbing a rock.

    Location

13818 divided by 3 is near by
    Are you thirsty?
Do you need to get some water?
Think water storage and you will be on your way to finding YM JR.

I know where he is. Unfortunately, I'm about 2,700 miles away so I can't play.

I hope GS left him with one of those little cocktail umbrellas ... it's gonna rain.

P.S. I heard a rumor that willem3 got stopped at the Redmond airport last week after the TSA received a tip that he was involved in some sort of eastern European plastic figurine trafficking scam. Anybody else hear about that?

Interesting, I had no idea. Is the gravel road leading to this connector also private. The online map seems to label it as such. I take it the owners (corporate perhaps) are OK w/ MTB taffic.

I thought about scooping YM up and heading up the hill, but Flagline was calling this weekend. That short section of Todd Horse camp trail, north of the hwy, is in great shape.

Sorry everyone, I went back to check this morning too, and YM is indeed gone. BTW, someone had to climb up there to see him - he was wedged in a pocket not visible from the trail. I'll see who I can find as a replacement...

    Too Many eye's

We need to be careful were we hide him in the future. Our trails are way busier than they used to be ten years ago. I hope we can find another one. Third time is a charm. YM III

Fellow MTBRians, I would like to introduce you to YM3.

Below is his ride for his upcoming adventure.

Now, I propose a new twist to this game...

I will be riding the Big Fat rec ride tomorrow. Somewhere along the route, I will place YM3 (likely in the high country). Unfortunately, I will be driving the Budget truck for the first wave of riders, so will be starting with the second wave, BUT...

Find him, move him, take pictures during the ride. I will award Beer* for pictures at the after-party tomorrow night.

    I am The Schwagman.

Edit: Hint; I will find him a spot somewhere high on Flagline.

*If you don't drink or can't have Beer, I'll have substitute schwag.

Forgive me MTBRians for I have sinned. It has been 2 days since my last post.

My duties with the BBFT held me until nearly the last rider got started, so rather than leaving YMIII on Flagline, he rode with me to a secret lair at the conflux of Sector16 and Upper Whoops.

To protect YMIII from the feral element, you'll notice I took it upon myself to add a little leash. On the positive side, YMIII can now assist in opening Beers.

Good luck YMIII! Let's hope your mission lasts a lot longer this time around.

    That's too easy!

Someone should hide him on a nondescript rock somewhere, and we all need to "geocache" find him!

Or would that defeat the purpose of the whole game?

    YM3 has moved

Yellowman3 was getting kind of lonely up at the Starlight shelter and was ready to move. He appreciated the weather protection the shelter offered, but wanted a new location with a view.

He hitched a ride with a group of mountain bike advocates in town for the NW IMBA Summit:
    Pacific Northwest Mountain Bike Summit

YM3 enjoyed meeting many of these great folks as it is their work that creates great riding opportunities throughout the NW. YM3 loves trails and mountain biking, so anybody who helps create more trails is a friend of his.

After meeting new friends, he went for a long downhill run all the way back to Phil's trailhead. Cold beers were enjoyed by the ride group and YM3 met even more new friends.

There were many temptations in and around the trailhead, and talks of fun events really peaked his interest. Yellowman the reggae artist was playing Bend Sat. Night and YM3 would have loved to go and done some dancing. The IMBA Trail Care Crew was there and stories of life on the road and visiting many different locations sounded fun. There was an RV there and it was heading back to NC soon and YM3 was interested in seeing some great fall color and maybe hooking up with the now famous Pisgah Gnome:
    Adventures with the Pisgah Gnome

In the end, YM3 decided that the trails around Bend OR was his home and he passed on all the opportunities presented. He did note that he wanted to be a bit lower in case it got cold and somewhere that he could see trail users and wildlife.

He spent a few nights enjoying great fall color in this tree before moving on to his current location.

    So, where is YM3 now?

After a night or 2 in the nice tree, we went for a short walk in the woods to find the perfect location for YM3 to rest for a while. He wanted the view, but also wanted to make sure he was safe and in a location that would not yield the same results as YM1 and YM2.

I hung out with the little guy a while to make sure he was happy. We saw a few walkers, a few trail runners, some mountain bikers and some ducks on a pond. YM3 thanked me for the lift and we enjoyed a great sunset.. I told him I look forward to seeing him next year when I come back out and waved him good by.

As for me, I jump in the RV and head to NC on Thur. hoping to catch some great late leaf color when I get home.

SWEET! I've been watching this game for a couple of weeks w/ little hope of ever finding YM i.e. just moved here (2) months ago and still getting familiar w/ the many trail systems. However, I just came down a line yesterday from Wanoga Complex and rode through this section at the back of my ride on the way back to town. Hopefully here's still there tomorrow....

Once he is picked up, please provide details on this location. Have got to ride this the next time we are in Bend!

Nat - so I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get YM from his previous location. I did a night ride with a local bike shop last Wednesday Night and got within 200 yards of where I thought YM was . The caveat is that I was in the lead with another rider when we noticed that the other two riders in our group of four were no where around. We headed back towards Lava Falls parking lot to find our missing riders and discovered that one of the two riders bailed without telling us and headed back to town - apparently our pace was too much. From that point, we decided to bag the ride....

That said, wasn't YM's previous location on the deschutes river trail? Last week, I rode a line starting from the Wanoga Complex (i.e. Tiddlywinks), to Storm King, across Conklin Rd., and then down the the River Trail @ about where the Big Eddie is. From there I followed the trail back to town. Wouldn't I have passed YM's previous location along the River Trail?

Ironically, I just came through the section where YM current home is. I came through there at about 5pm today. Were you out there positioning YM about this time? Do you remember seeing a group a four riders that would have pulled over while your were climbing a little section in route to where YM is......

He was on the DRT just across from the 7th Mtn. Resort. It was a brilliant hiding spot because from the isthmus you could look up and see him but he was above a cliff without any obvious way to reach him. To get to him you either had to scramble up the cliff or ride around and come in from above, which was a good ten minutes around. Nice work Woody!

I placed him in his current spot at about 3pm., so he was there when you passed! That wasn't me, whoever you saw. I last got spotted in the meat department at Safeway by Willem3 over the weekend.

Will YM hibernate in the snow? If I see something yellow in the snow, should I eat it?

Damn... I hate snow. There, I said it! Must be the Wisconsin-ite in me. All you winter freaks can kiss my arse!

Oh, well. I'll find him again next spring.

Dammit Nat, I know right where that spot is now and the last one was indeed brilliant Woody. The water IS really low now there. Almost didn't recognize it.
For the current one, I assume it would be fair enough to say that one must look a ways up hill along a traverse with a couple technical sections and somewhat near a famous stump.

What's famous about the stump? I know exactly where this is, but have not heard the "Lore of the Stump". It's been told that Stumps don't lie, but that's another matter altogether.

Isn't that the section above ODP? I don't recollect any special "stumps" nearby. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.

His flexible legs and arms and new leash make it easy to place him above ground where the casual passer-by is not likely to see him. That was a short stroll down the hill from our condo at 7th MTN.

FYI, that section of trail is on 7th Mtn Resort property and not USFS, the AUO owns that section of trail, the pond and 27 acres down in that area. I have been appointed to the land committee at the resort to explore options for possible ownership transfer to the USFS.

In terms of YM's next location, you'll have to stay tuned i.e. it was nearly dark by the time I got back to Phil's parking area. In accordance with the rules, he's attached to my bike and I didn't take him home. As my Wife (shuttle car) was not at Phil's Trailhead when I arrived, I decided to book back to town on my bike due to the need of a quick tune. That said, he's attached to my handlebars and will sleep overnight at a local bike shop until tomorrow when I pick-up my mtb. I'll take the time tonight to think of a cool place to make his next temporary home....

To All YM game players - A new location has not yet been established i.e. it turned out that I didn't get my bike back from the shop until 5:00pm tonight. You have my commitment that I'll place YM3 in his new, super cozy home tomorrow

Take pics in the bike shop too!! Open a beer with his accessory. Discuss the air speed of the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Have fun.

YM3 has a new home - it's not as cool of a place as I was planning due to weather restriction today and the onset of snowfall - I felt it would be best to keep him a little lower in elevation. Go Get'em....

Great area, but someone nab him quick still too easy to spot we don't need YM4 already! Lots of wide eyed hikers that close in.

I'm loving this thread. Dh and I did some riding in Bend for the first time this September and fell in love with the trails. It's fun to see some familiar trails and follow YM's adventures vicariously from the wet west side. Seen a few trails we need to come back and explore. We stopped and watched a guy ride down that log. Didn't try it ourselves. Carry on!

He's actually behind the tree far enough that unless you're looking for YM you'll not see him....at least that was my idea/attempt. Anyone who knows this section should be able to pick him up super easy & place him in a more sequestered spot (if you think he's not safe).

I had a sneaky suspicion that I placed him in too easy of a spot - too many pics to. Was he visible from the trail? It was almost dark when I placed him so it was getting difficult to judge....

    Nat,

I should mention that the original idea Seedy and I came up with was to hang YM and have him looking into your window at your office. Did not pull that one off, so settled on the tree location above DRT.

I could see him but he wasn't glaringly obvious or anything. Someone riding by at trail speed probably wouldn't have noticed.

Hey Rock Climber, I was thinking about doing that up here too. Nice find as well!

Where are you thinking of starting and I guess we'll have to start a WA thread.

Bendites, I assume Yellowman 3 will have to be moving to the Radlands or Horse Ridge soon. Snows coming eh?

Sorry for the thread hijack Bendites.

I haven't decided on a location, or the rules. I think we'll have to tweak a few of the Bend rules and allow some car travel as long as we keep it to the main riding spots.
