Hey everyone! Thinking about a New Year's Day ride on phills trail. Anyone ridden it recently? Conditions ok?

There was snow in town yesterday, so I don't know how high you will get before its too deep to ride.

So is it too muddy as of now? Trying to learn the etiquette properly. Was rainy for a couple days, now its drying out and warm, haven't been out and want to respect the trails by all means. I live by Phil's so would go there first but if COTA trail maestros are saying its too muddy this week, I'll take a drive to Horse Ridge or Maston....On a related note the COTA trail guide warns of how bad the mud can be on Gray Butte, anybody been up there lately to say if its good or bad at the moment? Many Thanks!!

I would probably hit Phil's as early as possible in the day. This way the ground is still solid from the cold overnight temps. It will most likely dry out by Thursday with no new precip and warmer temps in the upper 40's and low 50's.

thanks a lot for the reply....i just checked it this morn around 10 was totally muddy. Was fun riding in on the skyliner access road and back to town through the mansions and getting mud sprayed in my face, but stayed off the Phils complex trails for now.

I have been working on Marvins the past couple of days and have seen a lot of riders on the trails. I hiked a couple of the trails and found a lot of widening of the trails from riders going around puddles and mud. People seem to think that because it has been dry that the trails are good to go, but when it freezes at night it draws the moisture to the top from the rains and creates mud. We have great winter riding trails!

Stay on the trail and keep single track single.

Great reminder. Thanks for checking out the status of the trails. We received a lot of moisture in the past couple of weeks that is still on the trails and in the dirt. Sounds like we might have some repairs to do in Spring.....

Just looking at our spring road trip - in the end of april or early may what would we expect for rideable trails in the area of Phil's. We did a couple of rides from Swampy Sno Park when there in September this year.

Are most trails open by late april?

    Thanks

We are certainly experiencing a MILD winter. That being said however, don't expect that the Spring will be mild from a snow perspective. There is a chance that Phil's will be rideble in April. The other trails will not be ready. Most of our riding in April is typically out East in places such as Maston, Cline Butte, Horse Ridge, Horse Butte, and Smith Rock. Peterson Ridge in Sisters may be clear by then as well. Personally, I am hoping for a very snowy late January, February, and March. My skiing has suffered!!
