    MTB near Portland

Going to be staying in Portland for business - Is there any decent trails within an hour or so from Portland?

Yes - many. When are you coming - the weather will dictate what's open.

Early April and few times later in May - June. I live in Corvallis, and I am familiar with the local weather patterns, I just never get up around Portland to bike. How close is the famed Sandy Ridge?

Sandy Ridge is about 45min-1 hour away. It is worth riding. I would call bike shops in Hood River and check out Post Canyon. If it warms up a bit, Falls Creek Falls might be open by then. Thrillium/Cold Creek area is close and a great place to check out. If you want more xc riding (and a little longer drive), some of the road 44 stuff off of hwy 35 might be open/cleared. Closer in, Larch Mtn on the oregon side might be open, too.

Highly doubtful FS44 trails will be rideable before June. There's a ton of snow up there and I'd imagine a lot of blowdown as well. Stubb Stewart, Brown's Camp, and Wilson River would be other options to check out west of town.
