After two days of driving, a freeway shooting (with an officer involved), being locked out of the condo at midnight with 30 degree weather, we are ready to ride!
Coffee: check
Bikes: check
Food down: check
MTBR representing: check!

We is ready!!!!

First impressions? Beautiful! The bike lanes on the roads are even elevated so the cars stay off them! Great thinking guys; only if Cali would have thought of that.
The Mount Bachelor Village Resort is awesome too. We overlook the Deschutes River and there is a spa on the balcony!

Time to ride!!!!!

Hey Francois and Kyle - Tell Andy that I finished his keg last night and I need more funds to buy a new keg of Cismontane IPA.

2 days of driving? My record was 8 hours door-to-door from Santa Clara to Bend! If you look across the Deschutes River to the South, you'll be looking in the direction of my old house. I'm jealous of you guys - Bend is a very nice destination. Phil's Trails, McKenzie River and camping up near Mt Bachelor brings back some good memories.

I don't suppose you guys can bring some of the single-tracks and trail-friendly legislatures from OR back to CA?

Francis should post photos soon. We rode for 11 to 5pm today. Epic! We got to ride a wide variety of trails today.
The first thing we did when we got back to the condo today? Open beers and start downloading photos. It's now 6:20 and we are still downloading photos! Simply an awesome day! Still in our jerseys....
I have to get SoCal up here! Everything from fast and flowy to rock gardens and stunts! Thanks to Lev for leading us!!!!

No worries Martin. We are about to go to Deschutes Brewery for a topless costume party.

Nice! Ahh, Whoops Trail - now that's a fun one. After a day out at the lakes or mountains, my wife used to drop me off at the Swampy trail-head so I could ride back to town.

some hanging out photos.

it seems everybody here rides.

- On the radio they kept talking about the upcoming cross race and handmade bike show.
- We saw a group of 15 kids on bikes on a trail. They were in class elective - mountain biking
- the bike lanes are elevated
- the beer is insanely good. mostly ipa!
- whoops trail is A++

Near the end of one of the most amazing rides of my life, we came upon Whoops Trail. Our gude Lev was one of the key designers of the trail. He said this was a trail that could make a 10 year old rider or a Cedric Gracia happy.

This is truly one of the finest sections of trail I've ever done. It is about a three mile downhill section of huge berms, jumps, tables and doubles. What cannot be captured is the flow of the trail. The transitions are intense as you just send it right into a berm that just shoots you out into another set.

It's like a Whistler mini A-line. You can do it over by climbing a gentle fire road for about 15 minutes. Lev told us about Whoops Happy Hour, where they just have lawn chairs and beer at the bottom and just hang out as people session it.

Glad you guys hit Whoops! Last year, after MBO, we stayed a night in Bend to go ride Phils and then we sessioned Whoops 4 or 5 times. Insane!! It gets better each time you ride it since you learn what's coming up and where to get speed. Speed is your friend.

After coming off a jump, I heard a strange noise and stopped to see what was up - my 10mm rear DT Swiss axle was coming loose!! Glad I stopped. I almost didn't stop because I didn't want to break my flow.

For those who haven't seen whoops yet, Check out out Kirt Voreis' video.

Did you guys ride the slalom track at the bottom of Whoops? We couldn't find it.

Edit: Derek, nice blur! Francis, is that you on an Enduro?

Nothing 10 Barrel makes can compare to Deschutes' Reserve or Bond Street series. 10 Barrel is fun, but they're on par with Boneyard, Green Lakes, Silver Moon, and GoodLife. BBC even has higher ratings than 10 Barrel.

Sadly, we did run over a honey badger last night. Or a lemur... We have some video of it but it may be too graphic for mtbr.

We're driving home this morning. We shall see all you Norcalers in Bend next year.

I think Rox is demanding his hefeweizen. Also, those two wiminz only ride 29ers and Rox is not pleased.

The TRc is an amazing ride. Derek has ridden his for a few months and it has elevated his riding a couple of notches. His climbing is better with this 24 lb bike that climbs like a goat.

He has it set up with a 120/150 talas fork and he is descending like a champ. We took so many drop lines and rocks and Derek is usually just laughing now. Bear in mind he is an xc rider.

We have another TRc and Ron, Kyle and I have ridden it. It has a low BB and slack head angle. We call it the hero bike. It can be set up to xc race or to send it!

It climbs like a hero. I think the frame is 4.5 lbs so the bikes can come in very light at around 24.5 lbs. The climb is typical VPP so it is efficient and has good traction. The rear shock is Kashima so its very active and supple for good traction. It's more active than normal since there's no stiction but the vpp handles it pretty well. Maybe a couple more clicks on the pro pedal setting is handy until you get used to it.

Here's the Day 3 video. Day 3 was three parks near town:
- Whoops trail twice
- Pump track and slalom park
- The Lair.

We then hit downtown and cruised around all evening long.

Lev-I saw the bench and my eye's opened with fear! Nooo! Not the crash! lol

thanks for the great weekend. I'm finally home.
I'll do a write up in a bit, but for now.... I can't thank Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours in Bend, Oregon 97701, mountain biking Mt. Hood, North Umpqua River enough for showing us the ropes in Bend. This is by far the best location I have ever ridden. Having a guide (or 3) was over the top! I'm secretly hoping you haven't shown us the best of Bend yet!!!

I had no idea what to expect since most of what I heard about Bend was smooth, flowy, sandy trails.

Then I met a really good rider last week that said half his friends loved Bend and half didn't think much of it.

Well now I know... the half that did not like Bend probably tried to wing it and try Bend trails on their own and tried to explore.

Bottom line: Go through Cog Wild and pay the money the first few times. It's a long drive so don't F it up. When done right, Bend is one of the best biking destinations in existence. There's hundreds of miles of singletrack and it's a canvas that needs to be customized to your riding preference and abilities.

Some day, I will bring my son here and Mark Weir. Both are guaranteed to have a good time. The range of Bend is that wide.

We're writing a series of articles on this. Check in later.

Francis nails it !

After watching that video Andy shot of Francis going over the bars on that jump I thought I would share one of Francis clearing the log jump for justice .

I also wanted to say thanks to Francis for letting me join in on the ride !
I just happened to be there visiting my family .

And a big thanks to Cog Wild for letting me know what an idiot I have been for all the years they have been in business in Bend.

My family has lived in Bend since 1977 . I knew about Cog Wild when they started their tours but was to cheap to spend the money to have them show me around so I just rode the basic trails out in Bend.
Big Mistake !!
When I go back next year I will book with them with no hesitation !

That was some of the best riding I have ever experienced !
Not to mention the beer in Bend is great and everyone we rode with was awesome !

Yeah, that's right Mark!

We saw LindseyV on the last day and she said she just missed our Friday ride. She was all set us to teach us the art of riding bigballs. Obviously, I need some tips!

The bigball rider in the black jacket was one of our guides on Saturday, Kirin.

More Footage from a Cog Wild tour in Bend, Oregon!

Awesome pictures, great videos, and perfect summary of riding in Bend and the Cog Wild Tour company. I want to go back again for sure.

I'm deeply sorry, but couldn't stop laughing at your crash video, Francis, with commentary building up your skill just before the moment of face-plant. Classic.

Bill and I did a "Bike and Brew" tour with Cog in August. Here's a little video from our 4 days of riding...in case anybody needs more incentive to go ride Bend for themselves:

(Since I'm a new forum member, I cannot post URLs it seems. To view, simply go to YouTube and search for "Bike & Brew Weekend with Cog Wild - August, 2011". It's the first result.)

JC, I have a more detailed write-up coming, but let me just say this about the Blur TRc: it's magical. I put 65 singletrack miles on it in two days and can safely say, this is my next bike. Coming from a nomad, it had that same comfortable SC feel, in a lighter, more responsive package. My first few miles on it were on a 1,000 foot climb and it took maybe 2 minutes to get settled in. No weird pedal bob, killer traction over roots and rocks. And on the sinuous, twisty singletrack it just ate it up. The lower bottom bracket and slackened headtube really make this the perfect trail carving machine. There were a few instances of pedal strike, but they were avoidable. We'll be seeing a lot of these on the trail next summer. They aren't cheap, though. I may need to downgrade to PBR for a few months...

Hmmm Looks a bit more smooth than when we video'ed. Must be the trail conditions. lol
Stu?! You know Stu? Oh, that man is a riot! And Linda rocks it too! I heard they moved on from Bend. Bummer for everyone involved-that guy is insane! You should ask him about singlespeeding with me sometime. Thanks for sharing Lev!

Consider attending the tour in 2012: Bend's Big Fat Tour 2011 – Bend's Big Fat Tour

It supports the same good people and the local trails.

We just completed our 5th one three weeks ago.................Always look forward to mid October.

thanks for the great weekend.
Andy, I think your downloading speed of beer in Bend is almost as good as at Downieville.

Seriously... long drive from So Cal, but if the Rut says it's worth it... I think you'd get a good turn out, economy permitting. 850+ miles from The OC, 800 from the North end of the city of L.A., each way. Is the IPA up there that good?

I've driven that kind of miles coming back from Durango in a day, solo, but I-5... it's a grind until about Redding, then it gets interesting.

I really want to ride in Bend. Hey Cog Wild When do you guys open back up for business? I went to your website with the hope of there being a schedule for 2012. I have a few friends who saw the video on this website and we are thinking about trying to schedule a trip.

To those who are asking about the long drive - yes, we would think the trails are worth it. Plus if you have not ridden in Bend, it is always fun to try a new place! We have hundreds of miles of singletrack - built by mountain bikers for mountain biking. Great cross country and you can ride different awesome trails each day.

About the IPA, yes, yes and yes!! The beer here is GOOD! And PLENTY. IPA rules the way, so there is a ton to try - at ten local microbreweries! Really... The MTBR crew was saying that Boneyard Brewery had a beer or two that would battle Pliney, so you will have to come check that out yourself..

Dontpanic - We are working on the schedule right now. But we are also open to choosing certain dates for specific tours if that works for you, so let us know!!! Plan to have the schedule done by the end of the week, maybe a little later if needed for hotel dates..

Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours & Shuttles
Sponsored by Deschutes Brewery!! Come ride..
