Horse Ridge Trail Condition
I can't take anymore of this diurnal snow that's covered nearly every inch of good riding in Bend!! Last year I rode Horse Ridge all winter....
That said, if you've been out to Horse Ridge in the last day or two (i.e. since Thursday, January 24th, 2013) can you please provide an update on the trail conditions? I'll likely make the 20 mile drive tomorrow and ferret out for myself, but would appreciate a heads up beforehand. Thanks.

Let us know what you find out. Went to Horse Butte yesterday and with the frozen ground finally thawing out the trails were unrideable. Was hoping that it was just the start so I hiked in a bit and they were just goo. Looked like a couple people had ridden them and just chewed the snot out of the trail. So grabbed the bike and rode on the roads and they were very soft too once you got off the gravel.

I hiked there wednesday. I hiked up the eastern ridge, to the top, and into the Research Area.
It was not quite ready, IMO. Quite a bit of really slick ice, and tons and tons of mud up near the top. This was before the rain last night and yesterday.
Your mileage may vary, however.

Escape from Moscow is good. Probably 99% snow-free until the first fence. Go early, while it's still frozen. Best as an out-and-back. Too much snow/ice on the upper trail.

Our trails here in the valley are snow free

Horse ridge was downright awesome yesterday. Ice in spots, semi sloppy in spots up top, and absolutely perfect coming down sand canyon.

There, fixed that for you

Mushy and slimy out there yesterday. Still too wet. Very slow on the climbs, lots of tire slippage. Only good part was the big decent. Another week or two needed with mild temps....

Did the loop on Monday. Bottom was GREAT. I suspect the lower elevation did not freeze at night, and drained. Up on the hill, SLOPPY. Canyon great, but I'm on the same page as Willem another week of mild night temps and should be best conditions possible.

Don't give it all away, Brutha James. For DF to make such a bold blanket statement like that... well, it's indicative of a general ignorance of some of the Valley's fun spots. Either that or perhaps he was in one of his trademark feisty moods, in which case, you're def wise to wink, nod & say, "Yes, Sir!"

Horse Ridge was really good today. Very little mud and lot's of tacky dirt. Might get sloppy again when it warms up, but if it stays dry, should be good for a while. Sand Canyon was almost perfect.

I was there as well on Sunday (2-10) and as mentioned the trails were in near prime shape. There was a huge difference in just two days, as on Friday (2-9) it was still pretty greasy up top and especially in the canyon, but a few days of warmer & windy weather drastically improved conditions. Get it while its good!
