I have a rear tire in dire need of replacing and I obviously want a tire that will handle the NW winters. I'm limited to the 2.1 for clearance reasons and it will be a back tire. 2.1? WTB Timberwolf, Schwalbe Black Shark Mud, Panaracer Fire Pro DH (prefer it to the XC for mud) if they still make the Panaracer...I don't know. It's narrower than whatever width it says it is. Those are for Willamette Valley winter riding of course.
