    Vik's Scandal 29er Build...



    I've been wanting to try a 29er MTB to go with my Santa Cruz Nomad 26er. I decided on a 29er hardtail to get something different that made the most of the bigger wheels while being light on the climbs and my wallet...



    Looking around the On One Scandal caught my eye because:

    - it's light
    - it's affordable
    - has lots of tire clearance
    - XC geometry
    - looks pretty
    - comes with swapout dropouts so I can run an IGH without a tensioner
    - 31.8mm dropper steapost compatible
    - tapered headtube so I can mess with the headtube angle if I want to



    The folks at the On One US store were easy to deal with and accommodated several order changes on my part as I pondered the perfect size and colour!!!...

    The frame arrived quickly from the US and was packed very well.



    My initial impressions are:

    - very light
    - well designed and constructed
    - sweet finish

    What really matters is how it rides and how it fits, but my LBS is having some issues getting in a couple parts I need so I expect a slow build...

    I'll update this thread with better quality bike porn as time allows and as parts arrive.

    can you tell what kind of headset is inside the box : ) and whats the weight of it?

    I'm still sad I sold my on one to get a complete 29er from another company.

    I want to get another steel bike from them in a 29 flavor someday.

    The headset is an On One Smoothie Tapered unit. Claimed weight is 209g. It was installed so I can't verify its weight.

    Huge snowstorm here on the West Coast. Not much to do, but surf bike porn and stay warm inside. Can't do much on my Scandal until the wheels show up.

    Build Details:

    - 19.5" Scandal 29er
    - On One Smoothie mixer headset
    - Stans Flow rims
    - Hope Pro II front hub
    - Alfine 11 in the back
    - Shimano Deore cranks/BB
    - Shimano SLX brakes
    - Salsa stem
    - On One Mary bars
    - Ergon grips
    - RS Reba fork
    - Thompson post + WTB saddle
    - BMX platform pedals

    I'll be adding a dropper post sooner or later and I need to figure out the gearing still.

    Shipping = $42US [USPS]

    Duty = $0 [none]
    HST = $62
    Customs Handling Fee = $8.50

    Total cost = ~$613 [assuming CDN & USD at par]

    I don't get why it would be cheaper for me to order this from England then it would be from the states.


    Does that sticker behind the seat tube come off?

    It's not cheaper to order a Scandal 29er from the UK site.

    Ordering from the UK On One site:

    - Scandal 29er $411 USD [vs $399 USD from US site]
    - Shipping $67 US [vs. $42 from US site]
    - HST $49 + $8.50 handling fee = $57.50 [vs. $48 +$8.5 = $56.50 based on US site costs]

    So the same frame from the UK is $38USD more expensive. [I assumed $1USD = $1 CDN for simplicity]. Given the vagaries of international commerce that's pretty much the same price with shipping costs being the biggest difference.

    It also seems like the UK Scandal 29er only comes with vertical swapouts while the US sold frame comes with both horizontal and vertical swapouts.

    That's not a sticker. It's laser etched into the anodization. It won't be going anywhere. However, on the raw aluminum frame it would be all, but invisible. On the dark green frame the logos are painted and that small design behind the seattube is relocated to the front of the seattube.

    I almost got the raw AL frame so I wouldn't have to deal with any logos. I ended up with the black ano after giving it some thought. On the Scandal 29er at least the logos aren't too in your face.

    Ah you know what I was looking at the inbred 29er which was cheaper but not by much.


    That's my only problem with on-one is the clear coated stickers that can't be removed. (yes I get that the one is engraved)

    I do like that raw.

    I've just never been a big logo fan....personal preference

    At least with Brant being back, the overall decal schemes on the 2012+ are being toned down and looking much more classic and elegant, no real need to de-sticker.

    And I would prefer to deal with a sticker under the clearcoat than what I currently have on the TransAM, and that's peeling stickers lol.

    A laser etched frame is not for you then... Maybe start a new thread asking On One to make stealth un-branded frames.

    At least the snow melted and the temperatures are back into the normal range for Vancouver Island.



    With any luck I can finish this build Monday or Tuesday.



    I may end up waiting on the Hope Pro Disc II front hub 9mm QR adapters for a few more days, but if I can get the bike that far I'll be pleased.



    I'm hoping the Scandal rides as nice as it looks...



    I'll be taking her to Sedona AZ at the end of Feb to get her broken in properly and jam red dust in every nook and cranny...



    It will be nice to be riding a hardtail again after so many FS miles.

    Thanks! I've been running an Alfine 8 IGH in my Surly Pugsley for years with no issues. I love the low maintenance and clean chainline.

    I have no doubt I'll enjoy the Alfine 11 in the Scandal. My only concern is whether or not the new internals are robust enough for MTBing. Reports so far are mixed. I'm hopeful it will work out fine, but I won't be shocked if I break it.

    Only one way to find out - I gotta turn the pedals and see what happens...

    The wait for my 29er wheels will continue for at least another week...*sigh*... So I got desperate to keep the build rolling and threw on some 26er MTB wheels, BB/crank and pedals. That way I could confirm my saddle position and stem/bar position.

    Plus at least she's looking like a bike!...



    I had a Shimano Deore BB/crank in my parts bin so on it went with a 32T Race Face ring and some NRG BMX platforms.



    70mm Salsa 90 deg stem on top of a 20mm spacer. I had some low rise XC width bars in my parts bin so they went on flipped upside down. I don't want to cut the steerer too short so I'll try this out for a start and fine tune based on a bit of riding.

    I got most of the Scandal build complete.



    I still need some adapters for the Hope hub so I can't ride the bike yet, but at least I can see what she's going to look like.



    I should be rolling by the weekend. I'm really learning to be patient with this build!

    Got her out for a ride tonight finally. Quite a departure from my Santa Cruz Nomad!

    Big wheels roll really nice - especially uphill. The sharp handling is sweet when picking your way through terrain. On the really steep downhills I missed my Nomad's slack angles and more powerful brakes for sure.

    I'm going to make a few changes:

    - move up to a 185mm rotor in front
    - slightly longer stem
    - tweak bar ends
    - move to a 24T cog on the rear from a 21T

    Other than that she seems pretty dialed.



    My buddy Scott at Porcelain Rocket Bags is making me a frame bag and once I have that I'm going to do some bikepacking trips on Vancouver Island to explore a bit.

    I'll be interested to follow your thoughts and opinions on that Alfine 11 for MTB use.

    How do you like those tires? I have been eyeballing them and considering for my own 29er. What can you compare them to? I have experience with Nobby Nics on my 26" bike, and with such a larger contact patch I've been thinking of going with the Racing Ralphs on my 29er.

    Thanks. The build turned out pretty nice. The build quality of the Scandal 29er exceeds the cost of the frame for sure.

    I'll report back on the Alfine 11. I've been using a couple Rohloffs and Nexus8/Alfine 8's for years with no issues. Over in the IGH Forum opinions on the Alfine 11 are mixed with some problems and some people loving them in their MTBs. I'm not a super powerful rider so I hope I won't be able to break mine...

    Given that we ride all winter long here in the BC rainforest it will be nice to have a nearly no maintenance hardtail to ride so I can save my $5K FS rig for the summer and drier weather. I'll also be doing some bikepacking trips with the Scandal to explore our vast network of forest service roads on Vancouver Island.

    The Racing Ralphs are my first and only 29er tire and first tubeless tire. So far they've been great for traction and they are light. Too soon to say anything about durability.

    During the wettest time of our winter I may want a bit more traction and have been looking at Ardents for that, but so far I haven't felt the need and we are probably through the worst of it for this year.

    Given the **** forecast for this weekend I jumped on the bike this AM when it looked like the rain was going to hold off.



    Trails were slightly wet, but still in great shape.



    I cruised around the forest glad to be a moutain biker.

    Got out on an overnight ride to test out my bikepacking setup on the new 29er. The frame bag is just jammed in there from another bike. A better fitting custom bag is on its way.



    The Scandal 29er eats the gravel KMs great and has no issues with a bikepacking load. I'm looking forward to exploring the south end of Vancouver Island this year.

    I am really thinking scandal for my next frame. I have a inbred and do love steel but I think this bike with a niner RDO nude for which be a lightweight SS machine.

    Something makes me keep coming back to this thread. What a nice clean look, I dig your bike! I like the drive train simplicity of the IGH, too. Well done Vik.

    It's turned out very well and I'm impressed with how versatile it's proving to be. It handles a bikepacking load with ease and it a fun/nimble MTB unloaded on the trails.

    That's an old Epic Designs bag I threw on. The photo above showing a white and black TT bag is from Porcelain Rocket and is the one I'll be using on the Scandal:

    After a couple weeks of riding I made a few upgrades to my Scandal in preparation for a 2 week trip to Sedona.

    - 180mm front rotor from 160mm
    - 9mm thrue axle vs. the 5mm QR
    - Crank Bros Joplin 4" dropper
    - Sella Anatomica leather saddle



    Nothing radical, but I think this will be the setup for the rest of 2012.



    It's turned out to be a very versatile bike for a lot of my riding needs. I won't be getting rid of my 6"+ travel all mountain FS 26er, but the two bikes together give me a nice quiver for my dirt riding missions.

    Nice looking build. If you get a chance I'd be interested in chainstay length from centre bb to start and end of sliding dropout. :-)

    Here are my rough measurements:

    - BB to start of H-dropouts ~17"
    - length of dropouts ~1.25" [probably 1" useable]

    Sedona has been good to us for sure...

    The trails I've posted about in this thread around Victoria are in Hartland Mountain Bike Park and Partridge Hills.

    My work schedule varies pretty wildly, but if you want to PM me closer to the time you might be in the area I can give you info on what's good at the moment and if you want to ride on the Vancouver Island I'd be happy to show you around if time permits...
