Smoothie Mixer headset issues on Scandal

Anyone else have slight play in their headset? I got the Scandal with the regular smoothie mixer headset and it just seems to have a bit of play unless its tightened too much.

'll have a slight knock when rocking it with the front brake but the minute it goes away from slightly more tension on the top nut the wheel doesn't move freely and is too tight.

I've installed many cane creek headset and they actually stay smooth once cranked down, even too tightly.

Anyone else have issues like this? does the headset loosen up and spin freely after break in? It really makes it feel strange to ride when its too tight and I don't want to ride with it too loose and knocking, even slightly.

    The wheel??

I just put my scandal together, smothie mixer headset/straight 1 1/8" fork. Feels solid so far and turns easliy, but I've only done a 5 mile test ride around the hood.

The fork is stiff when turning, or there is knocking when rocking the bike.
Seems I dont have that middle ground where its just stopped knocking and freely rotates.

I had the same experience with the smoothie mixer on my 456C, I ended up using an old ZS44 top bearing cover and compression centering sleeve and I haven't had any other problems, but I was pissed that I wasted a lot of time on a poor quality headset.

The SmoothieMixer works perfectly on my Scandal. I wonder if the race or cups are not seated squarely?

OK, fixed it. Operator error. I flipped the bottom bearing. duh.
I must have been sleepwalking through the build or really into a song. Got it set now and it feels great.

Too bad i'll have to wait another couple days before I hit the trails again

    Hi All,

I have used my Smoothie Mixer w/ tapered rigid for for a bit more than one year. I did re-grease at least three times during this period. Last time when I removed the fork everything looked fine, I put the fork back with quite big amount of grease because of the winter that was coming. During the last few rides I noticed some drag when I turned the handlebar so yesterday I removed my On-One carbon rigid fork and I surprised what I saw. Rust and rusty grease everywhere, in very bad condition. The lower bearing came apart to two peaces, balls were rusty, the bearing's ring was also rusty. I have never seen bearings in that bad condition like this, however I rode in winter during the last 5-6 years... (Unfortunately I didn't take pics how it looked like)
Very likely it was my mistake, would had been better to take apart the front end at least once during the winter, I don't know.

So my question is, to replace the damaged lower bearing which bearing should I search for?
Is it replaceable with other bearings as well or should I search for On-One's own bearings?

On On-One's site I can only see the complete Smoothie Mixer headset. The pressed in cups looks fine and the upper bearing is also in good condition, no rust issues at all. Therefore I wouldn't buy the complete headset, if it's possible.

    Thanks in advance.

I've been using one for just over a year and half trouble free.

I can't answer your question as to other aftermarket bearing that will fit. But at that price the Mixer isn't out of hand, might be best to go with that.

Others may chime in with better options. Good Luck!

    Many thanks for your reply.

Well, so far I haven't found any replacement bearing which fits... Maybe the best would be to buy a complete new Smoothie Mixer headset. Very likely I will go this way. :-)
