    456 Evo

    1x10
    Fox Talas 110/140

Finished the build in early February, pretty much just did a frame swap with the XC bike I had been in for a few years. This set up and frame is so much more fun to get around on.
This was my first steel frame and I now see no reason to buy a frame made of any other material.

Sold my XTC 29er and bought this mint Inbred. Stoke factor through the roof and really nice older components. Will probably replace the rigid fork with a Recon Gold or similar and the Flat Top Niner bar with the Easton Monkey Lite from my old bike. Long term I'm considering an Alfine Hub but for now the 1x9 is perfect. First proper hitout today.

Built this inbred up last fall, and got about two weeks of rides before the snow fell. Then rebuilt the drivetrain over the winter, so today was basically another shakedown ride.

    On One Bike pictures......

My friend Mick has gotten in some rides on his new 456 Summer Season. This is a beautiful bike with a custom paint job and On One graphics by Mick.

He bought the frame from Titus/On One USA and then refinished it with black sparkle paint and a blue toner to achieve a metallic appearance that has some depth to the color. It looks great.

    The bike has:
@ A Fox Talas 36 140-160mm fork with FIT cartridge
@ Zee drivetrain with an e*13 guide
    @ Avid Code brakes
@ 2 different wheels with a Fat Albert 2.4 on the front and a Chunky Monkey 2.4 on the back
    @ Saint pedals
@ CK headset and Race Face Diablo stem
    @ Sunline 745 bars
@ Gravity dropper post and a Chromag Trailmaster DT seat

This is a great bike! Mick rode Black Rock with it last weekend here in Oregon and was real pleased with the results.

Looks great! Do you know the weight? I have the same fork on mine now, but it looks like you were more careful about weight when choosing the smaller items.

How is the front derailleur working? I am going to add an XT 2-speed crank to my current 1x10 setup but was somewhat confused about which direct-mount front dérailleur to order.

The overall weight is 10.5kg or 23.1lbs.

BUT the plan was never to built a weightweenies wet dream, but to build a bike that handles my weight and drive style. Why I went for the Reba instead of the SID and got an extra 100grams is due to flex. I want the stiffer fork when braking and under normal use therefor I went for the Reba.

Allways loved the WCS line from Ritchey, so it was a no brainer when I started the build.

Front mech works perfect and very swift, and it's a direct mount fd-m786.

    Very nice!

Could you write about the RWC BB92 Pressfit BB, do you have good experience with them? I'm asking it because I would really love to see a good alternative to Shimano's PressFit...
To be honest, I have had so bad experience with Shimano PressFit BB so far, it is a nightmare, I can't write any more "positive"... (I have to align my front derailleur every 100-150 miles as soon as the bearings are getting more worn and worn and after a while I had to add spacers as well because my crankset started to play more and more...)

    @semmiho

I'll keep your post in mind... Just got the build done today so the trails are untouched by this one. But I chose the RWC BB due to similar issues as you post here. Some dude changed from Shimano to RWC and had no further BB play issues, and that was with the plastic cup model as mine. Now RWC will only offer their BB92 in a alu cup version at the same price as plastic. Woopaaaah.
That was my reference and why I bought it!

Thanks a lot in advance. I heard very good feedbacks from RWC parts (it MUST be fine!) so I'm looking forward for your feedback.

I did a good progress with my Inbred 29er and got closer to the final stage that I figured out.

Bought my first Inbred 29 in 2006, followed by an Inbred 26 the same year, followed by a Scandal in 2007. Recently bought the wife a new Scandal 29 frame and now have a Lurcher on order. Does that make me an On-one-aholic?

Thanks, The fork is the On-One. It replaces a steel Voodoo fork and I like it by comparison. Less weight and has more offset. Really nice with this frame.
Surly Tugnut for the chain tug on the drive side only. Its not really needed, the Bolt-on hub holds solid in the fork ends. I use it mainly as a chain adjuster and a beer bottle opener!

I have used an eXotic rigid carbon fork (looks similar to the On One) and an On One monocoque rigid carbon fork. The eXotic one is noticeably more flexy and not as stout as the On One monocoque fork. Just put the eXotic on my new Scandal frame, and it was a surprising change after riding my Lurcher a bunch with the monocoque fork!

My daughter needed a new bike and my wife gave me a limited budget for the build. This is the compromise I came up with.

    On-One Scandal
    X-fusion Slide Fork
    Zee Shifting
    SLX Brakes
    Fire-X Crank Converted to 1X10 w/ Bash
    Vuelta Wheels
    Maxxis Ignitors
Cheap E-bay stem to get the fit right. Then will buy the real deal.

Heres my On-One Inbred 29er. Definitely a love/hate relationship. I love the ride quality and the geometry of the bike, but its a little over 2 lbs heavier than my previous SS frame (which was aluminum). So, for now i will keep riding and enjoying it, but i cant say im not thinking of shopping for a lighter weight steel frame...

    18" Teal frame
Bontrager RXL wheels, seatpost, and handlebar
    RL stem
    XR2 Team tubeless tires
SLX crank w/ Raceface chainring + XT pedals
Reba RLT fork w/ 15mm maxle
    weighs 25 lbs even :-/

    The Black

Got this frame as a replacement for my Large GT Zaskar Expert that cracked at the bottom bracket. At 230 lbs without my pack, I feel the resiliency of steel is better at my weight than aluminum. Simple frame swap, with some ghetto magic courtesy of the Brownsville Bike Brigade and the General Repair Center for the front derailleur and seatpost collar. I got the idea for building 'Darth Vader's bike' after a recent 100k race my brother and I entered. As I was literally wheezing up another hill, a racersnake passed me with a polite 'Excuse me, Darth!' This inspired me to think up Lord Vaders bike. The colors are there, and a choice detail or two. 18" feels perfect for me. I'm about 5'11" and 32" in inseam. As for the ride, it feels a lot like a big BMX bike, and I like the long seatpost. A quick drop and it sets up well for street/urban use. The frame even has rack mounts.

I posted a while back with a Scandal 26er build.

Most of that has now been sold and replaced with a C456 build.

18" frame, RS 456 U turn forks, Shimano SLX drivetrain and Deore brakes with slightly poor wheels until I can afford some more.

Nothing too exciting, but I built this up just about a year ago, and with a few recent tweaks - narrow/wide chainring, a mythical 75mm stem, and a nice big 2.4 ardent upfront to match my 29er - I think it's finally all dialed in:

Thanks. It's a 16" frame and the fork is Reba RL.

Stick propped up against the drive side crank arm was removed via Photoshop.

Mind me asking what brakes you are running?

    100mm fork?

Brakes are Shimano SLXs, but I can't remember the exact model, with XT rotors. The fork is 100mm travel.

    My Scandalous Offering.......

I brought a V2 Scandal with the rigid forks, and ran it single-speed, using BB5 brakes, Midge drop bars and Tekro levers. It was great, but a bit pain-full on the flat trying to keep up with my mates (32t x 20t). Very precise steering, and good traction.

    On One Bike pictures......-imag0528.jpg

    So I added gears 1x10:-

    On One Bike pictures......-imag0534.jpg

    On One Bike pictures......-imag0536.jpg

It has one 10 speed ergo lever, shimano 11-36t cassette, and old Campag Olympus MTB rear dérailleur. Indexing is good. My crank is 32T race face single speed, and when I do get it out of the kitchen the chain has not fallen off. However I do have a 36t "wide-narrow" chain-ring on its way,to try that out.

The rear brake with Tekro lever is mtb BB7 (180mm max size that would fit frame) the front will soon be BB7 road 203mm (caliper in post), currently mtb BB5 with interesting cable pull.......

I really like the rigid / Midge combo, only issue at the moment is the extra cable pull on the ergolever with BB5, means the gear flap squashes my finger (hopefully resolved when road BB7 turns up).

Here's my Inbred. Bought it last spring and gave it a new fork, wheels and brakes a few weeks ago. Reba 120RL, Sun Ringle Black Flag Expert and Deore M615 brakes. I'm debating going 1x9, wish I would have spent extra on the 10 speed setup.

My Fatty. Rolling chassis build. New crank, everything else out of my parts bin/taken off my TransAM hardtail.

I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. Demille.

32# as sitting now. Will probably drill the rims eventually - sounds as if that'll dump another pound. Lighter tubes than the stock boat anchors already took of a full pound from each wheel.

    Thanks glad you like it.
Its a Charge scoop and I must say I find very comfortable for such a minimal saddle.
Hope I've been some help to you.

Although it looks like the cables are clamped in the work stand the jaws have a deep V profile so they aren't affected!

Experimenting with 650b wheels on my Inbred 29er. This setup resulted in a great feeling 12.375" BB height versus the >13" BB height that I've had with large 29er tires. Roll-over ability didn't feel all that different even in big rock gardens. Not committed until I'm able to ride it a lot more times and test back-and-forth between wheelsets

My home trails have a lot of big rock gardens and the loop I did had some other technical climbing section too, but I didn't have a single pedal strike or ring strike. With the smaller wheels the BB height is now right in line with what most 4-5" hardtails have regardless of wheel size. Most 29er frame conversions won't work out like this because they would already have a similar BB height when using the stock wheel size

Here's an updated pic of my Scandal. I recently converted to 1x9 for a race and added new (to me) wheels and rubber. What a great bike!!! So glad I took the advice of people here on MTBR and went with the Scandal! She's only about 90% done, still need cranks and brakes.

Looking good! When you replace the brakes, will you keep the Clark's rotors, wondering if they are any good?

Got a great deal on the rotors, have zero experience with them, so I'll update here. First issue though, needed to add spacers. The rivets interfered with the caliper so much so that on my front I didn't need to use a different adapter going from 185 Avid to 180 Clarks. They look good though, but they are about 5gm heavier than Avid.

I've been looking at Hayes prime expert or XT, any thoughts?

I switched from ancient 165mm Avid BB7 to new XT when I built my Scandal and the difference was night and day. The performance is strong and quiet, with a huge bonus in that they use mineral oil and are super easy to trim the lines.

No, I am running old Braking brand wave rotors that are overkill and tank heavy. So that is my next upgrade, either Shimano rotors or some type of full floaters.
