WTH is this crap on my Legs?

Took a night ride tonight and when I got home what I thought was mud on my legs turned out to be a massive cover of some sort of hitchhiking pod. I have no idea how I got it on me.

I'll assume I must of rode through some grass of some sort but honestly I don't remember doing it. All I know was I was about ten minutes into the ride. As I was riding I started to smell an odor akin to paint or paint thinner. I figured it was a smell blowing in from one of the near by housing developments or from the RR tracks not to far from where I was riding. After a while I just ignored it and continued my ride.

The realization of what it was didn't hit me till I got home and decided to take a shower. That's when I realized that what I thought was dirt/mud on my shins/calves was neither.

The damn things are sticky as hell and was just loving my hairy legs and wool socks. Wasn't too hard to get off but did take some time and damn, I now know where the paint/turpentine smell was coming from. Whatever the sticky residue is on these things that is exactly what it smells like. ( I used "Fast Orange" hand cleaner to remove the residue after getting the pods off , worked very well )

I've lived in the greater Maryland area all my life. When I was growing up I saw the green pod like ( stick tight ) type hitchhikers and the more annoying "mini spine balls" ( Burr grass ) but never in all my life ( including over 19 yrs of mountain biking ) have I encounter these before.

Too small to take a picture of. The pods are roughly 2mm long, pointy on both ends, 1mm wide at the widest point with a stick like appendage about 1cm long on one end. Looking at them they are reminiscent of what a spermatozoon looks like under a microscope. Must of been hundreds covering my legs and socks. I did not see a listing for these on "Wayne's Word" although they did list the others that I know. If you know what these are please post up.

Must be one of two things. Either a terrorist type attack by the Middle East or North Korea, or, an alien lifeform invasion.

Sorry, I forgot to add, " Only serious responders please".

Looks like I might have to plan a return trip to try to find the plant that puts these out. The curiosity is killing me. I should probably call these "hitch-hiking seeds" rather than pods because they're so small. Whatever, I must of stumbled into the mother load.

This thread would be a perfect canidate for the more serious Passion forum. Cat Man Do, you could title it "My Leg Passion" a guaranteed serious reaction. Passion

I've seen this once before in a documentary, though in that case it got into his hand and it went bad. He had to lop it off at the wrist.

Try this. Stand in front of a mirror and say this, precisely...

Klatu Verata...Necktie...yes I think it is necktie. Things will be fine after that.

Yeah, well I wasn't sure where to post this. WTH, I'm here so I guess I have to roll with it. If I could deal with pulling those buggers off my legs I guess I can deal with whatever comments are dealt out.

Likely the only way I'm going to get an answer is to go back and retrace my last ride. I like a good mystery as much as anyone else. Really not a big issue but the thing I found most intriguing was "the smell". I could very easily just let this go but "I's got to know what caused that smell" .

( edit: Where's that friendly neighborhood botanist at when you want him? )
