The urge to pet a beaver can be overwhelming, but they are not always so eager to be petted.
It is best to approach slowly with a calming whisper, until the beaver shows you a welcoming sign.
A wet beaver with a shiny coat is usually a happy beaver and desires attention.
Never go near a dry beaver, as they are usually ornery, and will not want to play.
Beavers are expensive. Buy a parakeet, they sing and chirp but won't eat your life savings.

How many Road Runner cartoons did we see Wile E. Coyote buy all sorts of crap from ACME to catch the Road Runner? All the times he got blown to Hades, dropped off cliffs, hit by trains, etc.. etc... and all he had to do was make clicking sounds? What a dumb coyote.

But, there are things you can do to a beaver that you can't do to a parakeet. Picture it in your mind.

Saw this guy this morning. I made sure to move him off the trail so he didn't get run over. These Tortoises blend in so well with all the rocks out here.

Indeed! I had to keep looking at the picture and finally realized that the rock in the trail IS the wildlife.

Does it ever freak you out that tortoises have such long life spans? The ones in the Galapagos live 200 something years from what I can remember...just imagine...this tortoise will be walking around long after you start riding the worm trails barring any accident or predation.

Definitely crazy! He had some damage on his back, looked like a bird or something tried getting through to him. Who knows? That Tortoise may have been here longer than the city of Las Vegas!

Thanks! I feel fortunate to have run across this one. Here's another shot which is slightly out of focus, but cool because it shows all the unique markings on the cat. Wished I was carrying a DSLR instead of the point and shoot that day!

Usually see a few deer every ride. Cam across my first snake the other day. I think I set a record time for the second half of the trail!!

What is that snake eating? Is that teamwork or what? One holds while the other one swallows? Do you think they'll share?

The snake easily swallowed that rat. If it can get past the head (onto the shoulders) of it's kill, the whole thing is going down. Bye-bye!

Here are a few more (screen grabs). 1st one shows how close I came to running them over (top right). 2nd one, the snake that was attempting to swallow what I think was a mole, was dragging all parties involved into the bushes. Of note. This was shot on the Backbone Trail / Sycamore Canyon. This area got hammered by the fire last week...

mdemm, that is a great pic, it would have been a truly great pic if we had a bit of cannibalism, snake eating snake eating rat / mole. That snake trying to swallow is a sitting duck and completely defenceless at this point in time.

A bobcat tops my list of critters to see in the wild. Kitty, kitty! Both pictures posted recently show the same pose; ready to head into the trees, but looking over to check things out.
