Whats going on here? An OC mystery

Hey, I found this stuff in the woods today. I was checking out a little clearing for a potential campsite and first off I noticed that there was brush cut and placed strategically to kind of block access. Then I saw a pile of freshly dug up rocks. They had no lichen or moss on them and had been rinsed clean by rain. I was looking at the rocks when I saw a bunch of orange buckets further in the woods. This spot is about 150 feet off the main trail and in one of the most remote spots around.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076536424/player/b783ef2855" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

It appears as though the camo tarp was over the whole pile but either blew off or was found by someone else.

There was also this lame looking barbed wire wrapped log here. It was just lying near this stack of stuff.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076442583/player/772170060f" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

There was this nice water can.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076534474/player/154a3bfdf4" height="640" width="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

There were a whole lot of camo tarps, tent stakes, ropes, cables and of course those black plastic things the stuff is stacked on. Also there were at least 3 large containers of various bug killing chemicals, spectracide, camp guard, and some other stuff.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076533584/player/d8c7358c85" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076531174/player/8e8c939bda" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076135215/player/8561406098" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

and of course, a nice new propane tank

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076533144/player/9309748bb9" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Also there were some tree climbing spike things, like you'd use for a tree stand.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076532214/player/4e516ac26b" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

And a brand new spool of barbed wire, a funnel, some baby wipes

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076438103/player/74f0a4eaaf" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

And a brand new container of barbed wire staples.

    <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/33175822@N06/12076133085/player/c34f6e01ed" height="480" width="640" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So what are these guys up to. It doesn't look like they've used this stuff yet. Setting up a weed plot? Maybe just building a secret hunting camp or blind. Poaching? Whats the propane for? Why do they need all that barbed wire. Secret meth lab ? (too much breaking bad) What are the big plastic things for. I'm not sure but it looks like these are the same guys that dug up the rocks.

Someone's setting up a dope plot I'd guess. In 4 months you should have a better chance of getting shot if you go there.

Yeah the wet ones scare me the most too....

This is state land, you can access the main trail by vehicle during hunting season, I'm guessing thats when they dropped it all off. But even though its pretty far in the woods, this being Mass, its really only about a half hour walk from the nearest road.

I think its weed too, no other reason for the barbed wire, it must be to keep deer away. But why the propane tank. It just seems weird to me.

I also considered possible homeless squat, but it seems like a lot of cash was spent on stuff a homeless guy wouldn't find important. And the stuff has been sitting there for a month or two at least.

Defiantly a strange find, either city workers are planning some kind of project or people up to no good with a meth lab or.....

I doubt it's a dope grow. No fertilizers, kiddie pools or miles of poly tubing. Where i live we stumble on many cartel grows. Looks more like a drug lab, especially with the tree stand spikes. I guess that would be for a look out. Because once you start making speed you have to finish it, otherwise you have a bomb on/in your hands.

I have heard of putting pot plants up in trees. you place them in buckets with a rope wick back to ground level. The wicking rope is tied to a small rock or block this is placed in a second bucket usually buried or healed in at ground level. this bucket is filled with water.

Your far braver than me. I wouldnt have stuck around long enough to investigate or take that many pics. I certainly wouldn't go anythere near it again.

As others said, a little "Breaking Bad" or "Moonshiners" action right there. That barbed wire is intended to keep humans out, not wildlife.

In P.A state lands there are fenced in areas all over. They are there to keep the deer from eating all the saplings. Usually they use chain link fence but I dont see why they couldnt use barb wire. I would contact
the state first to see if they are constructing anything and then proceed from there.

Looks like a project supply stash that was found by someone and they went through it looking for valuable items to take . The wind does not blow lids off buckets like that. It's strange that some of the buckets are full of water and others are not.

contact the authorities and report back.

I'm pretty familiar with the park and rangers and I highly doubt this is any kind of official business. This park is way understaffed and has a shoestring budget, they can't even keep up with regular maintenance. It's too out of the way and shady looking.

I think you're probably right. Somebody found it before me and looted whatever appealed to them. I know the ranger so I'll tell them about it.

could be innocent....i work for an enviromental company that does field work and that could be a site, but it's doubtful they would just leave stuff out there. If it's meth, you should contaminate it. Pee and poop in it. serves them right

^Agreed barbed wire and wet wipes seem totally innocent
If the brush was cut to gain light, pot grow. If the brush was cut to hide a "work area" who knows what they're up to? Either way seems totally shady. Freetown?

If that's a meth shack, it's pretty much for certain they are all tweaked on the wind blowing so I say pour gas on it and burn it.

If it a pot operation they likely just kidnapped a teenage girl and forgot they did it, so I say pour gas on it and burn it, blame it on the wind blowing.

That is an environmentally inappropriate management decision. If it does turn out to be pot, it will enhance the local organic environment and should be observed before you go feral on their butt. Burning the witch should be reserved for survivors of the meth lab fire, or other undesirable splinter groups.

Hope that helps guide this Springfield riot.

I'd just burn it, if there was a witch there I'd try to scare her off first.
You never know if witches are packin' though, so I'd fire a warning shot as she ran away just so I could be sure I could burn drug operations in peace and w/o being disturbed.
