Strange food in the grocery store

I've seen frozen lamb heads and all manner of animal parts in the store over the years. Then, I saw this not long ago. Appetizing? Anyone? Makes me think of getting a shot and hoping the spots go away. Not something I'd like to have for dinner.

What have you seen in the store you'd never eat?

Strange food in the grocery store

I worked in a grocery store in Phoenix that sold heads - cow, goat, lamb, pig and horse. The Hispanic butcher was find of saying "You've gotta be a hardcore fawkin Mexican to eat a damned horse head!"

Mmmm... Spotted Dick! I was brought up on this stuff Great with hot custard!

My Mum used to tell me of a pudding they ate in Australia: Murder on the Mountain... sponge pudding with red jam on top... Not sure how well that would sell tho.

If you've got spotted dick you might want to consult your physician.

A few years ago, I got (out of curiosity) some scrambled egg push-ups.

Weird, and not at all tasty, like you would think.

Yeah, it was a night of drinking, debauchery and women of questionable character. I wasn't using very good judgement at all, I wasn't even phased by weird street food. What had me concerned is that the antibiotics took longer than usual to get me back on the horse.

When we go back south I see them in their jars and ask myself how I would have ever eaten them in the first place. But, I would probably try them again. I do remember loving them. Them and these pickled sausages....

I seem to recall that the scramble egg push-ups were used as some sort of freaky sex toy. I'm thinking that they may not have been of the best quality as I was obviously in a very seedy part of town, away from the prying eyes of the authorities (and proper hygiene). I wonder if I got the spotted dick from those? However I may have been misdiagnosed since those antibiotics really took a while to clear me up. I think I'll have to give Vietnam a whirl next time.

My hick dad used to eat both the sausages and pigs feet after cutting firewood. He used to get them at the gas station. I stayed with the PB&Js from home.

Pig skin? Sure, deep fried delight

My dad grew up on a small farm in Rupert, Idaho. I think pickled pigs feet was considered a delicacy over there, but he could never get any of his kids to eat it. He swears pickled watermelon rind is awesome too. Never tried it, although I'd probably be willing now that I'm older and not suspicious of anything he says is good.

Strange food in the grocery store

Nothing like a big bowl of pho with chewy tripe floating around.

I used to gobble up gizzards too.

Funny thing is I used to be as skinny as a rail eating that stuff.

My wife is Mexican so her family eats a lot of menudo (soup with tripe) but I am not a huge fan. I also eat a lot of pho but don't usually get the tripe/tendon meat. Huge Vietnamese population in a nearby area with arguably the best pho spots in CA. The more 'exotic' taco meats from little hole in the wall taquerias are good to try too but I still have to have regular carne/carnitas tacos along with them. Tongue/cheek.... Mmmm

Haha, actually was just describing some of the tacos/meat I eat when we get taqueria. Didn't mean it to be "tongue and cheek" in that sense but now I see how it was confusing.

On a related note, the local newspaper did a review of a new restaurant that offers paratha with approximately 100 crickets in each serving. Yum. I'd imagine they don't have to add much liquid to the recipe given all the slime and goo that is already inside the crickets.

The only thing that sets off my gag reflex. I LOVE cocktails too. I just hate tomatoes. Sadness. Although I don't see how clams fit into that. Bleh.

Ahhh! Another tomato hater! I can't stand the basterds... if they're cooked into something well it's OK, but anything like raw or partly cooked... bleeehhh! I have a great fridge magnet I found a few years ago, says "You say tomato, I say fu*k you"... it has been on the front of my fridge ever since.

Anyone ever been down Snake Alley in Taipei? If you make it thru the interesting smells, you can have all kinds of wunnerful stuff: snake bile/blood shots, raw turtle from the shell, monkey brains from the head of a live monkey... not nice.

Love that stuff, too bad it has so much sodium. Has to be from a bottle though, no cans.

I remember my older brother renting a movie called 'Faces of Death' and there was a part where they showed a table of folks feasting on a monkey's brain. Gross and I couldn't watch it now. I don't even like boiling lobsters... poor things "scream."

See, I don't even know the ropes because I only buy pre-killed lobsters. I just remember hearing them scream when they were thrown in the pot during summer "clam bakes" on Cape Cod when we used to visit out there. And I know it isn't a real scream, just air or something.

Auuuugghhhh! So. Mr fishbucket! Perfect place to ask, if you can bear with me. What is the most humane way of killing crabs and lobster? I still can hear the crabs frantically hitting the side of the aluminum pots.

I'm too lazy to read through this whole thing so if somebody has already mentioned Cow tongue, I apologize. Now, I think a Cow's tongue is pretty darn disgusting thing. I have to think it tastes like meat that has been pickled in grass juice if you consider what they eat all their lives. If I see one on the shelf in the meat department when I am shopping with the family, I will pick it up and do a licking motion on my daughter's arm. Gross.

Lobster needs a large knife thru the head and a slicing motion down thru the nose.

Crabs can be done with a large knife or even a spike stabed from the underside bettween the Abdomon flap and the mouth. Or grabbing both sides of the leggs in each hand and knocking off the Shell, peeling it off. this way is good to clean them before steaming the parts.

This guy mucks up the first 2 crabs with the spike, but you get the Idea of where to do it. How to kill a crab with a chopstick - YouTube

A Vietnamese co-worker offered me a taste of a piece of durian fruit that he had in his lunch. Smelled like a mixture of rotten onions and garlic and tasted even worse.
