    RIP Rocky 1996- 2013

Our spunky little Jack Russell Terrier Rocky passed away suddenly yesterday. He would have turned 17 in November. I've been trying to keep busy and stay controlled but I am still overwhelmed with grief with this loss. I knew this day would come ... but its always too soon. And 16 1/2 is a long time many fun times, sad times, many changes ... Rocky was there.

He was my avatar when I joined MTBR in 2008... now I have this chick with a goofy smile

Rocky was introduced to mountain biking in his golden years (like me!) when he was 11

He was more interested in leading the way and exploring than following. He was the only JRT I know who loved water. He would get distracted by a scent on the trail, but he always came when he was called

Like me and singlesprocket, he had a wicked sense of humor.

and he was a good sport... but he hated wearing clothes, and preferred to go naked

The last year was tough. He was arthritic, he lost his bark and he became totally deaf. Although we carried him up and down stairs, never complained

He was highly intelligent, taught me to do agility and I will miss him dearly and deeply

I needed to get this off my chest... and I am going to shred the gnar

I am so sorry! What an adorable little guy. Your pets will always stay with you. They really know how to snuggle into your soul, don't they? Thinking of you both!

    Very sorry for your loss!

Judy, I feel like I got to know Rocky through you and your posts about him. You were lucky to have such a friend for so many years but I know Rocky was lucky to have you as his best friend too! I don't have anything I can say to make it hurt less...just know it will be better soon. I love my Cliff like you loved your Rocky and I just took him for a walk and gave him a big hug. I will be crushed when his day comes.
    Stay strong!

Sorry for your loss Judy & Chris. He lived a long happy life so be thankful for that. I know I'm dreading that day will come for my little buddy. He is a large dog the size of a Doberman. He's half Dobie & half Border Collie. And he is 13 and a half now. No way of age life expectancy because he's a mutt. But I know there is not many more years left. I feel for you knowing how much a little buddy can mean. Although you will never be able to replace his unique personality, don't let his loss deter you from getting another little fun dog. Take care.

I'm generally sadder when a pet dies than when a person does.

We've got a pug that's getting old and another one not far behind her. It's sad to look at them and know, once things start going wrong. They don't mind it a bit, so who's got the better deal, us who know of death, or an animal, that does not?

Sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a dog is harder than words can ever describe. Although at the same time the memories they leave are irreplaceable and all good.

Major Bummer about your pup - I've not had a Dog in years. I'd get too attached if that happened - it's worth it though.

Thank you each and everyone. Your messages are so heartfelt and sincere and I am humbled by the attention.

We buried Rocky in our backyard and we will make a "rock garden" and plant perennials in his memory

My heart and soul are there with you Judy... we lost our beloved Conan the Barbarian Mutt Boy on June 12th, he too was 16 1/2... know that you gave them everything they needed to have a good, fun, healthy long life as friend and companion. Love for a pet is truly unconditional.

This is true. I had to put my pup down after 10 short years with her. She was strong as day one when I took her in, yet the cancer had won the battle, and she was still was so happy. Dogs/cats, are amazing animals and should make us all look at life a bit differently.

If I had a wish it would be that our animal companions wouldn't be allowed to grow old.
