    Politics Poll

Should political threads stay or be immediately binned and the OP get a vacation?

Depends on the thread. The Shutdown thread managed to allow a lot of divergent views to be aired without turning into a flame war. The powers that be did well to let it run.

I actually sent a PM to CHUM on this exact matter. Waiting for the response.... CHUM, paging CHUM....

Look, we an official "bike thread" in OC, right? If the members can behave themselves, maybe there should be an official "politics thread" where anything political is kept/said/preached/discussed there and there only. If members can't behave themselves, then axe 'em. Isn't that the general rule already? Why not just do this, since politics are clearly going to pop up here again and again here like they always have.

I can say that I wouldn't be involved much with it because I hate the subject myself but I would probably lurk to get in some good laughs and chuckles from the silliness that would undoubtedly go on in there.

Technically, there are "Native Indians" on every continent except for Antarctica.

    So, which one is it???

I spent a lot of time in that "Shutdown" thread, and I say bin them. For a time, I tried my best to steer all threads off politics, but they just keep/kept showing up. No amount of OC member policing will stop them. It's rare that a political thread pops up and remains civil, but even when one does, I'd just as soon folks take political talk to political websites. Myself included.

My only argument for them would be certain topics like the "Shutdown" thread are basically water-cooler topics that are being talked about across the country. But I don't think the mods should pick and choose, so bin.

I remember back when eMpTyBeeR banned the politics before........that's when I got re-cycled!
The only problem that I have with 'political' type discussions here is that it has a tendency to bring out the glaring degree of semi-literate dum-dum talking points that I see already on the bumpers of El Caminos all over town.
The Ad-Hominem stuff doesn't bother me in the least.

In other words, your'e either truly 'off-camber', or yer a 'Poser'!

While I agree that the disclaimer below the OC excludes politics and religion, I don't feel personally that censorship or trashin' a thread is the answer to the potential problem of insult tossin' between members because they can't both be part of the same thread which either does or does not agree with their personal views. Common ground is the answer and we can't get there unless there is discussion. Granted, no one wants to be insulted for their beliefs but everyone should be willing to be challenged to reaffirm their beliefs and have a civil discussion about it. Perhaps I'm idealistic, perhaps this isn't the place (like the dinner table), but if we can't talk about it everywhere then we really can't talk about it anywhere. I remember being part of a thread where 2 individuals were put on a time out because of the insulting nature and personal attacking of their postings towards one another. What's wrong with that? Isn't that what the moderators are supposed to do? I am for discussion, if we don't believe in the same thing fine, but we are citizens of the same country and I will respect your belief even if I do not share it and I expect the same.
I don't know why,... it's just MUSS easier to pedal than the other ones.

What I really think is: bikes have a way of uniting people of all backgrounds - whether you are rich or poor; no matter what your race, religion or national origin is. Politics does exactly the opposite. It has no place here. But. Somebody disagrees with me so let's argue some more about dum stuff that gets us nowhere and changes nobody's minds.

    bingo.

There have been other high level/current topics that have been allowed like the Boston bomber and that cop who went rogue.

generally creating a political/religious thread for the sake of arguing online will get binned and possibly the OP in hot water. There are a plethora of other sites catered to those subjects out there on the nterwebz.

Also, speaking for myself only, I am a total bastid when it comes to political/religious crap on MTBR and shut them down on sight...others (who have more juice than I) request they stay open, or simply re-open themselves (does not bother me FYI)

The poll looks like it's going to be close. Maybe we should demonstrate true bipartisan compromise and allow the single politics thread like Hawg suggested. Who wants to start the thread and serve as de facto moderator?

My post was meant to drip with sarcasm. If we did start one, we could call it "Chum's Politics Thread". What do you think?
