    OT: College Football Discussion Thread

So lets discuss college football. I'm an Oregon Ducks football fan. Ducks are currently ranked 4th in the nation. They beat Fresno State yesterday 42-25. GO DUCKS!!

Up here in Oregon if you are a Ducks fan that means you usually don't cvare for the OSU Beavers. I was hoping Wisconsin would hand the Beavers a loss yet somehow the Beavers held on the win.

The ducks are sick. I almost want to get my way into a PhD program or law school in Eugene just to be an official duck.

Ducks are solid, but when all is said and done (if they were to play in the championship game): Crimson Tide steps on a Duck, 49-7.

(c'mon, really, there is no arguing this).

Actually I think the Ducks would win that game. Seriously, the Ducks are a better team.

I really enjoy watching the Ducks play, but defense wins championships. I've been waiting for them to win-out and make it to the BCS game, but they always seem to lose a big game towards the end of the season.

I had totally forgotten about that...it was a great game too, unlike last year's blowout. Hopefully they make it out of the conference undefeated, and get another chance at it this year. Alabama does look tough right now though.

So does LSU and Florida St. Two teams, along with Alabama, with great defenses that would give the Ducks a tough time. If Oregon makes it to the championship game that is. The Pac12 is having a down year and with USC already losing I don't see how the Ducks can keep their ranking high enough to get in. I think they will eventually be bypassed by Florida St and who knows, somebody like Georgia might sneak in ahead of them as well. It comes down to strength of schedule and the Ducks are going to suffer from that.

Oregon looks tiny matched up to the two big SEC powerhouses they lost against the last couple years. If they make it to the national this year against Bama, et al., they'll likely lose, but there is a chance with that speed and agility they can win. In a way, I hope they make it to the national, but lose, so we can avoid having a huge bandwagon of fans come on board, but get a great extra game in.

As far a getting stopped by a great defense, we'll see what happens when the ducks meet Stanford. They owned USC's offense last week, holy cow, I thought they were going to suck this year.

I'm starting to think that the OSU Beavers are cheating. They won again against a ranked team. I was hoping that they would lose.

How the heck did I miss this thread?!?!?!

Gator fan (and alum) here. Feeling pretty good after this weekend's beating of (granted, an overrated) LSU. I wasn't surprised we beat them though, since they have looked weak all season to me.

I still think we're a little overrated too. But I am feeling much better about three of the four games I thought we might lose this season (LSU- because we won. UGA - because USCe schooled them, and FSU- because they lost to a nobody NC State). Now just worried about USCe, and if we beat them, the SEC champ game.

The real deals IMO this year? Alabama, Oregon, and USCe.

Although I think the NC game this year is going to be nothing but a sacrificial altar for whoever plays Alabama. They are, once again, scary good.

I think whoever wins UF vs. USCe on the 20th will go to the altar in the SEC championship to get eliminated. Therefor, my prediction is Oregon vs. Bama in the NC. Bama winning big.

But then, it's early. So we'll see who develops throughout the season.

What kind of Ducks fan are you if you are hoping that another Pac-12 team loses to a ranked team? Do you not understand the BCS, strength of schedule and all of that? And yes, "I love my Ducks!" (UO grad school alum, '05). But you gotta look at the bigger picture.

The Ducks need other Pac-12 teams to be ranked as highly as possible, and they need Pac-12 teams to succeed against all non-conference foes, to be sure. It is the best thing in the world for the Beavs to have a perfect non-conference record and be ranked highly when they meet in the Civil War. Unfortunately, it looks like another year of the Pac-12 eating itself alive, beating each other (3 straight weeks of unranked Pac-12 teams beating ranked Pac-12 teams). Meaning, probably only one BCS bowl game, less $$.

That said, I don't see the Ducks losing their #2 spot as long as they don't lose.

Plus, how can you really hate on the Beavers? Lately, I see the Beavs as the dorky little brother to the Ducks, the one I kinda hope gets it right now and then. Mike Riley is a stand-up guy, the program is small and receives a small fraction of the funding that UO does -- I mean, my team's high school stadium was as nearly as big and nice as Reser was up until a few years ago (I don't blame the Beaver fans for hating on the Ducks, though -- engineering grads don't support the football team the way that Phil Knight and the sports marketing grads do! They do have a nice nuclear reactor, though ...).

I am a Duck fan. Unfortunately, I'm a realist. Although I disagree that 'Bama will win big over the Ducks, I wouldn't put money down on UO in that game. The Ducks offensive line may not be good enough to compete an entire game with 'Bama's front this year, and I'm afraid it will result in another year of getting pushed around and not being able to get plays off the way the Ducks are used to. I'm remembering the title game with Auburn where Fairly and the other D-line was in the backfield the entire time, disrupting the option. Oregon also can't kick field goals if they stall out, which I think will be big in the NC against 'Bama. I think Oregon will manage to score -- Kelly is too smart not to come up with something that will work, if only for a little bit -- but if it is another 21-17 game, Oregon loses.

Plus, there is the issue that 'Bama will have over a month to prepare for Oregon's offense, which is actually pretty simple to disrupt. Oregon's offense thrives on confusion and surprise, exacerbated by the fact that teams usually only have a week to get ready for it. When you have a month to study film and get your reads drilled into you in practice as a defensive player, defending against that offense becomes much easier. Which is why I think that Oregon hasn't had as much success in bowl games as it has had in the regular season.

That said, the Ducks appear to have the best passing QB that they have had in a while, with a relatively versatile receiving corps (compared to prior years), which will help the O-line (it's easier to pass protect than it is to run block when the O-line is outmanned by a big strong D-line, especially on quick passing game where Mariota appears pretty good). So UO can keep other teams off-balance a little more than they have in the past. The defense also appears to have improved over prior years. And I'd love to see Kelly stuff his "cute lil' offense" down Saban's throat. We'll know more after the Ducks go up against a few really good teams here in the next few weeks!

I just can't get a good read on how the Ducks would fare against a tough, disciplined defense like Alabama. Would Alabama's speed and athleticism win out or would the Ducks up tempo offense just wear them out? It doesn't look like they are going to be tested until the Championship game since the only tough opponent left on their schedule will be USC.

Disclosure: I'm not a Ducks fan, just an observer.

Well the Ducks have a BYE week. Hoping they win next week.

I don't see how the Beavers won against BYU today. I was hoping the Beavers would lose.

So far my Gators are doing OK. I called that this would be a tough game coming off a huge win against LSU and right before USCe. Also, Vandy is better than their record indicates.

The WVU game was a surprise to me though.

What a day yesterday in CFB!

WVU was over rated. No surprise that they lost to a good Texas Tech. But very surprising how BAD they lost. Taken out to the woodshed. lol

Ohio State is mediocre (yet again) and barely escaped an unranked Indiana.

LSU knocked USCe off?!?!?! I didn't see that one coming. Hopefully USCe wasn't just overconfident after UF beat LSU the week before. I really hope LSU exposed some weakness that we can exploit next weekend.

Will be interesting to see what the BCS rankings look like this evening.

    My prediction?

    1. Alabama
    2. Oregon
    3. Florida

Those are the easy ones. But trying to figure out where K State, OSU, Notre Dame, LSU and others fall gets tricky...

Florida snuck into number 2. Probably surprised some folks but really when you think about it the strength of schedule is working in their favor when compared to Oregon.

I'm curious if Oregon will overtake Florida after playing this weekend. Assuming they win of course. Not too happy to see Oregon State in the top ten.

ASU-Oregon this Saturday. ASU leads the Pac 12 in TO margin at +10 I think and have had a very good passing attack. They'll need to be +2 or +3 in the TO category for this game to have a chance I think.
