OK ya buncha knuckleheads....what the hell is going on?!

Seriously - what has gotten into everyone? I have to go away for a bit and all kinds of shenaniganery occur.....

I am sorry that 'rep' got fiddled with - it is a system that needs tuning...

I am sorry that Hutch caught a time-out - but he did go a little haywire with the thread bumps...he'll be back in the game soon enough.

The OC is a tight knit and unique forum. It is fun, irreverent and rowdy....and has the most *personality* on MTBR (IMO).

BUT other forums here have their own vibe....and what is acceptable here in the OC may not be OK in another forum.

Think of MTB as a community. The OC is the Animal House of MTBR....a place to ride you bike inside, slap your buddy with a fish, or engage in an ultimate game of nude beer pong ....

In other forums you may be expected to use a coaster, drink wine and discuss the virtues of polishing your nipples (spoke that is) listening to Michael Bolton....

You wouldn't go to your buddies house wearing muddy shoes blowing snot rockets in the corner demanding a back rub would ya?

All I am asking is please respect the vibe of other forums..

    thanks for listening

Best I can tell, the OC is a collection of some very interesting people that share a love for the sport. It is a great culture, one that seems far more supportive than the real MTBR world.

What is going on? I think people have responded very visibly to what appeared as a personal attack on the culture here. It felt like we were being called to the principal's office for doing something wrong--something like studying too hard or making too high of grades.

The culture here in the OC is freaking great

The OC's culture in other forums is not so freaking great...

When multiple 'heavy-hitters' from the OC enter a thread because some noob says something noob'ish it can be pretty intimidating...as an example.

    Catch my drift?

I know to what you are referencing, Chum. In general, I'd say that MTBR is actually a pretty "civil" place (outside of OC). Especially as compared to some of the automotive forums, which to be honest are downright hostile.

I think the point is to keep the attitude of OC actually IN OC.

I'm a noob. I'm offended. Time outs for everybody!

TBH, I'm not really sure what you're talking about. I think I missed some amusing flame fests, did catch the mongoose one though.

there are quite a few - but this is not going to be a 'point finger at people' thread...

While I cannot speak for the collective Cat Herd, IMHO the OC has become the dumping ground for many of the butthurt, and socially challenged. Appears that after crossing the line to get beat up in the regular bike forums they then enter the OC with an attitude and an axe to grind.

Instead of the mods interjecting to enforce basic forum rules, it MAY be that we are trying to eject these azzhats from ruining the OC spirit. Since it appears the admin no longer regards, or respects the OC participants, [as evidenced by the as of yet unexplained re-assignment, and eliminating rep earned] then why the heck should we care?

Fact is we do. And by allowing a few butthurt azzhats to continually post hateful, controversial, or politically charged topics in the OC is more than some can stomach. If I'm not mistaken, this was the creative approach used to bump old threads and remove the current flock of nasty's.

(Just saying, this may be why, so many ask that a certain OC member be set free.)

I think I have nearly given up on many of the other forums here. This is due to my perception of the lack of practicality in much of the discussions.

If people simply used some independent judgment and common sense, half of the posts would go away. Then, throw in a little experimentation and time trying different things, half of the remaining posts would be gone too. That would leave the meat of the forums, and of course, it would all be contained in the OC

I understand what you are saying as it relates to etiquette, I'm unsure the OC is the only place where ranks are broke in that context.

In terms of intimidation I have also seen multiple OC frequenters come to the defense of others. In this reguard one way to tune the rep system is to consider that no rep system equals no heavy hitters.

Now can you post those pics for Nicole so we can cross post them all over the boards.

This is I believe the correct answer.

I am a noob here and haven't been here long but I joined because most every one got along even if the had a difference of opinion, a rare place among other forums.

The past few weeks some have come in here and started a few controversial threads. When said threads got locked down they (said poster who started said thread) then when on to other threads asking why the are not being locked down.

Got ya - I'll pay closer attention to the rabble-rousers (politically charged topics) and address those quickly.

Pertaining to the Admins who don't care - that 's a bunch of malarkey. The rep system was/is in dire need of tuning.

It's the Admins who take on the brunt of the maintenance for the site - it's not easy...and it's thankless....

So...now that I'm gonna be a meanieMod and start kicking the ornery users in the taco can we stop the Thread Bumping please?

We just want our ten reps a day returned. The tactic has backfired, instead of us giving out reps in the community at large we are hoarding our five a day. This is counter to what the admin was trying to accomplish no? Heck, the low rep guys will never have a chance of catching up unless the high rep guys help. Please consider restoring us to ten a day, the doubling the required points has slowed things to a crawl which I believe was the intent. Win/Win. Respectfully, AZ.

Well CHUM since you opened this up for debate a few thoughts
Creating oc and locking the recycling bin was imo a mistake. Think it puts the bs, off topic, and personality threads more mainstream and makes it legit. Think just about anyone wouldn't feel so proud and or self righteous when jumping in the dumpster to mix things up. Just keeps the shananagins at bay and somewhat in their place without having to ban or reprimand. Which leads me to my next point.

Think people should get timed out and banned more often but for being d!ckheads or nasty, not for doing something like bumping old threads in the name of fun. i don't know all the details and don't want to, but in this case I think a pm would have done the trick. If wasting bandwidth was the reason, than whoever gave him time out should be timed out too, because of all the threads that were created to save him. Seems fair, and also seems that random, sudden, and sorta outa left field acts like that have, can and will effect the mood or feel of this place. Which brings me to my next point.

While a could hardly care about the rep system and think in many ways it should go away, I'm not gonna go there, aside to say that it has become obvious that some hang some worth on it. So think it was a bad decision to just wham, change it, then sorta, hardly be open to ideas or discussion, then wham change it again. Like the hutch thing i just don't get it. Do you guys like making work for yourselves? Why not at least post up the new rules/guidlines by which rep is calculated so it seems fair again?

I guess this was for the most part what started all this.
I'd say if there is no 10 posts a day, that deserves a positive recognition, this forum is SOL.

As for the lack of keeping people at bay, that just act hostile, or in other ways cause trouble, there seems to be a fairly big red flag on that now.

This little protest has run its course, and have turned counter productive by now.
There is a dialogue now that seems to work, now it's time for getting forward, instead of turning this into the usual whining and bit$hing.
Making further mess is not going to cause anything positive.

....and yes, I wholeheartedly agree that Hutch was not handled in a reasonable manner, so maybe it's time to take a step back, and rectify some wrongs?

I get what you are trying to say Chum and your help is much appreciated and yes we are pretty rowdy.

The OC forum seems to be getting the blame for a lot of problems though. We got in trouble for using the rep system which led to complaints among other users who don't even like the system anyway.

Along with the rep problems we were accused of not participating in the other forums just to gain better rep amongst ourselves. So we come into the forums to help out which gets everyone else mad about our help. There's even a "how we help" thread on here to prove we weren't just hanging out here all the time.

Next we get upset people in here that have moved in from other threads to whine and start controversial threads and then get mad when we call them out instead of taking the bait and starting a huge fight. I think that's why Hutch bumped a bunch of threads up to get rid of those annoying threads.

Happy to keep to the rules that are set though. I don't think any of us acted out maliciously. We just don't want the crap that goes on in other forums here.

Happy to keep to the rules that are set though. I don't think any of us acted out maliciously. We just don't want the crap that goes on in other forums here.

Exactly which hands is it in?

    This matter is getting ridiculous.
The rep system was installed to enhance the forum.
Right now it's taking the forum down the drain.

I used to enjoy coming to MTBR, but to be honest, the last couple of months, the garbage to good ration has been suffering big time. This has been driven by very poor handling of the rep system, poor communication, and a couple of very unfortunate decisions.

Poor communication and very poor decisions, seems to have passed relatively unnoticed before, in spite of plenty of heads up from the members.
Now that there is a system that involves everybody, and that quite a number of members, seems to put value into, poor communication and unfortunate (not thought through) decisions, now impacts too many people to keep on like this.
We all make mistakes, but to be honest, it's turning into a habit here.

In the past I have defended the people behind MTBR, explaining to people that we all make mistakes, that no bad intentions were behind, and so forth.
The above is getting damned hard to believe, now that it's the same mistakes that are made, over and over.

Let's take an example shall we.
The rep system was changed. Loads of people got real annoyed cause it was done with real poor communication.
It was pointed out, and by pointed I mean bent in neon, that a lot of people were unhappy with the way things were handled.
After a while the admin makes a short notice, that gave more questions than answers.
Shortly after......same story, down to the last period.
I'm sorry, but that's simply ignorant.

The result: loads of annoyed and unhappy members.
Was that result so damned hard to predict?

Really, it's time to move forward, and by forward I mean to stop making the same mistakes over and over again, get some reasonable communication going, and perhaps thinking things over before taking action.

And no, this is not directed at you Chum, or anybody else personally for that kind of matter, but rather a general heads up for those whom have caused this mess.

No, I get it. If you're there, you have to get involved. I actually like that everyone on the Front Range is so passionate about the subject. There are lots of places where they don't care and the number and quality of trails reflect that.

    Admin/mod meeting at MTBR:

Admin: Ok, let's see, the situation is not good, loads of people are just about anything but pleased, with the way things work.
Like 50 people have been bumping old threads.

Vice over mod: Hey, I'd say we go give Hutch a temporary ban.

Clapping and cheering ensues, and all agrees this is a brilliant solution to all the problems.

Over mod: I'll handle this first thing.

    A couple of days later....

Admin: Ok, let's see, the situation is not good, loads of people are just about anything but pleased, with the way things work.
I particular I hear complaints about communication and transparency.
I also hear a lot of "free Hutch" all over the board.
Anybody got an idea what is wrong?

Vice admin: Hey I think I know. It's because we are not tough enough, we need to repress this with authority.

Temp. Mod: But hey, what about the complaints and the Hutch stuff?

Admin: Mind your own business. We have handled this very well so far, so no need for you to start questioning our qualifications.

Vice middle mod: I'd say we go hand out a few more temporary bans, you know, to show who makes the decisions. Make sure nobody knows why, in particular refrain from opening a thread that only admin/mods can post in that explains who and why is banned.

Wild clapping and cheering yet again ensues.

Under head mod: Brilliant idea, I'm on it. I bet that will restore the friendly tone and order in no time.

It's just funny how those "less than two dozens", for some reason are able to put an entire board off balance, and to cause the most activity (yes admin, that's where your income comes from...do you still think you're doing well when all those members are gone?), plus they seem to be identical to some of the ones in each sub forum, whom are very knowledgeable??

Personally I'd be giving loads of cr4ps about those people, cause they seem to have quite an impact.......but then again, to think that far ahead has not been the trademark of the admins lately.

Flynn, you nailed it mate, you are 110% correct.

    CHUM,

First of all id like to say that i appreciate your approach to the OC.
Its a warm, fun loving community, very different to the rest of the forum and i think its been a real success this year.

I think that the OC 'Heavy hitters are actually good for the forum, almost to the point that the weight of a few here can weed out the wankers and work as a bit of a team, i dont think thats anything for admin to fear, i think it restores the order so to speak.

Part of the problem with the upset of late and people feeling like they dont want to spend time here and moving to other sites is that people felt letdown by the admin.
Changing all the rep system with no transparency or communication showed a lil bit of disrespect to the community here.
I realise its their website and we are only visitors, but its more than just a website for some, we invest a lot of time here, its like a home away from home for us, and we are some of the people that this place relies upon to make it what it is.

The rep system is not the be all and end all, but its a great way to have the long term users to some degree 'keep the peace' and imo it worked very well until the admin took half out rep power away and reduced reps from 10 to 5.
5 reps a day is simply not enough.
How does one award great posts, the helpers, the underdogs, new members, great humour, great threads, warmth, supportive people etc, and then have enough to dish out a bit or red to the guys that you are talking about in your other thread and guys being general dicks, the answer is there is not enough to go round anymore.

If the rep system needs to be tinkered with surly the admin will realise that they have made a mistake and its put many old timers off and they will change it back, or maybe they dont care, maybe it was a punishment, maybe it was all in the plan, but we dont know, no body has bothered to take the time to explain it to us.

By taking the power away from the people they have made a big mistake imo, i predict we will see more unrest and drama because the dicks have a free run of the place now, its as simple as that

We all realise the Mods are here to instal the rules not make them, there is no unrest directed towards you guys, you give up your time and effort for nothing in return and we all appreciate that, but due to the total lack of communication by the admin, many of us see it as a lack of respect, that is why there has been a mass move to a few other sites, which makes me sad because i love this place, its a great bunch of people, a really special community that imo cant be replaced, i have met many fine people and friends here who many have been really let down by the last few weeks events.

most now fear that at any time without warning things will be changed without any discussion or communication, and due to the latest changes that have had the total opporsite effect than desired the place will change for the worst again.

People have lost a bit of respect and faith Chum, i realise that admin will probably say 'we dont care nor do we have to communicate anything with you guys, its our site, we set the rules, we dont need to tell you anything, you know where the leave button is, see you later ,go somewhere else'' this is the reason why faith and respect is lost.

    Cheers Chum.

I would count AZ as the most well respected member here, he usually speaks with great articulation, he is measured and thoughtful, he is the exact sort of member admin should be listening to and going to for feedback, and i totally agree with his sentiments above, infact if the reps were changed back to 10 i think most of the unrest would change over night.

It would, if somebody would be smart enough to stop handing out bans.
Some genius just sent Spinning Lizard the same direction as Hutch, with the same great and super transparent style of communication.
Somehow the result of that ought to be reasonably predictable, no?

    Cheers Chum.
first of all thank you for the well thought out post - you all here in the OC (most of ya hooligans) are really great contributors to MTBR in both specialized MTB knowledge and for having fun

But bolded in red above - therein lies a problem....a real problem.

sometimes y'all hit the nail on the head and virtually destroy (via rep) a nasty troll.....but sometimes (more than once) y'all have completely obliterated a noob who would not back down from a stupid comment.

One case was a guy who earned well over -450 rep points within an hour....he was not a troll....just an opinionated noob.

I understand there is no planning this, nor is there any malice - it is all done with the best of intentions....but it is a 'pack' mentality that has grown organically (for lack of a better term)....

It is VERY intimidating to all members when they see 8 or 10 cats with rep in the 100's all jumping in at the same time backing each other up....

but of course the stick swings both ways and y'all have + rep'd plenty into the green chiclet sword of 'acceptance'....which is all warm and fuzzy...

Those of you with massive rep power really need to think about who you 'zap'....for that person you gave a bright greenie could very well be a *****bag, and the member you gave red could be a real positive contributor super cool person in a few months/weeks...

And just so ya know - the Admins and site owners do care...they are just trying to find balance on a HUGE forum in a timely fashion to solve a potential problem before it sets in so deep it can't be 'fixed'...

    hope this makes sense....

    Funny . . . I don't recall this being a problem before "rep" was implemented . . . Hmmm . . . how could we rectify this?

Cheers Chum, thanks for reading my post and the fair reply.

I doubt if you remember when i came onto the scene but i was taken into about -500 red after my first post, i never had any help from mods getting out of it, admittedly it was a thread taking the piss, but i didnt let it deter me, i learned from my mistakes and i would hope i ended up being a decent contributer..

For the odd guy that gets put into the red imo its not worth changing the whole system for, i think its a fairly rare situation where a guy goes into the red for nothing, there is basically always a reason, and i think it kept the peace and order about the place.

Anyway Chum, i hope admin reads this thread and i do appreciate you taking the time to communicate with us because to be honest you and Crusher are the only ones that do and im sure it doesnt go un noticed, communication = respect and that shows that you care, and in turn that gains respect from us members..

I just hope the door isnt shut to a few further fine tunes to the rep system in a positive way not a negative one.

    Cheers mate

    There it is.

I never saw the point of the rep system, besides amusement, and since we, the OC, rendered it totally worthless, it may as well be dissolved.

Why not at least post up the new rules/guidlines by which rep is calculated so it seems fair again?

    reality check

This site is paid for by advertising money. It's free for the most part to users (classifieds is a small fee). If a couple of dozen people realy feel this site is going to miss them, if they leave. They are sadly mistaken. Don't let the door hit you in your chapped a$$ on the way out.

Those upset about the rep system form a klan in OC (many of them already hung out there. Coincident?)Goes out into other forums and acts the fool. Post a couple of feel good. I'm helping the community threads. For some smoke and mirror diversion. In hopes of furthering their pointless cause. All over a green turd? Seriously?

Sadly the ass hatery(is that a word), elitiesm and entilment you see on forums. Are also seen on the trails. Is this really the direction we want to go?

I obviously missed a lot today.
Disclaimer: I have not read every single comment in this thread. Sorry if some of these issues have been addressed.....

Chum you seem like an awesome guy. I respect you for starting this thread to have someplace to discuss the recent tragic events of mtbr and the holy grail of all forums on the internet, The Off Camber.

Of all the forums, chat rooms, xanga, myspace, yourspace, ICQ#, crap places that I've been a member of, The Off Camber is one of a kind. Most of us have never ever met, but yet we pretty much all get along in here. There are a few weird ones, but we just leave them in the corner to much on the niblets that fall to the ground. Anyways, not only do we get along, but we all share the same passion.....no not mountain biking....that's a gimme......it's HAVING FUN! We all love this little piece of internet heaven, because we know we are going to laugh, make jokes, cry....yada-yada. You get the point.

So when one of our brothers, and also a big contributor to MTBR, gets temp-banned for trying to bring some fun back to the O.C. and Gen Discussion (I don't know where else he played in), then please expect to see us stick up for him/her. Just like in real life, I would do this for a friend. Yeah you guys don't really know me, but trust me I would.

Also the "bumping eleventybillion oldie threads" was not defined in the rules as getting an instant ban. To be honest, many of those threads were worth a second look. Just because it fell to the abyss doesn't mean it's a crap thread. Being a newbie to this site, many of those threads were "new" to me. I actually spent hours that night on mtbr just reading and commenting on those threads that Hutch bumped to the top. Anyways, a warning would have been more appropriate. If I treated my kids the way that mtbr treats its members, then my kids would always be in timeout. Never knowing what they did wrong, just that somebody didn't like what they did. I would also be looked at as a bad parent. Instead of dealing with the situation, just avoid it and throw the kids in timeout because it's easier and faster.

Enlightening and prophetic words, from somebody that offers zero to the forums apart from the the type of post above, seeings all you do is whinge and whine, i would suggest you go back and read your last 50 posts back and get a comprehension of the person you come across as, your constant tough guy, insulting, and arrogant posts are exactly what detracts from this great sit, i feel sorry for you...
Every other person in this thread has been able to put their point across without resorting to the insults and put downs apart from you, you do this in EVERY tread you enter with no exceptions.
You make 0.35 posts a day and you use every one of those to put others down, troll, try and trow your weight around and start trouble, exactly what you have done in this thread, and i would guess this comes from a very low self esteem, as i said i feel sorry for you.
    cheers.

Apologies chum to have to do that in your thread, but that needed to be said.

Actually Chum surely this is the sort of trolling and baiting you are talking about that was going to earn people in OC an immediate time out? If you're unsure of the posters intent, just look at his user name.

Mojo Troll, I hope the slammer door doesn't hit you in the ar$e on the way to the brink.

I'll save my chiclets for people that deserve them, safe in the knowledge that the rules and intent have now clearly been spelt out for us and the site mods will deal with the garbage above on our behalf.

    Thanks Chum et all.

To be fair, this place hasn't even been around for a full year yet. So you're not too far behind the times.

As for all the butthurt over rep and the mass-migration to other forums, I'm not into that. I don't care enough to make another account on another forum (I'm actually still registered on the DirtRag forums). It seems that pretty much everyone still posts here anyways, so that's that.

This seems to be the common misconception about the folks who hang out in the off camber. If you were to take a poll you would find most of these same people would have the rep system abolished all together.

The guy remings me of a mtb version of Billy Mitchell, the king of kong, just makes me sick.

Rather than send you childish negative rep. As you have me. I'll simply ask you in public. Please stop passing judgement on me. Perhaps you should take a good look in the mirror before casting stones. BTW, you fit in great over at PinkBike.

Maybe Malibu can help you on your grammer and use of periods, as well.

Nothing wrong with that at all, ive said the exact same thing about the guy on here, the exact same thing, and i stand by those words.
And its a bit rich to ask others to not pass judgement on you when you do it yourself all the time..
    cheers

Rep 'power' is based on # of posts and how valuable they are to the community as a whole. The system was toyed with in the OC simply to counteract the anonymous neg reps that would follow certain members. Now that this has been eliminated, the negative peeps have been basically stopped cold and this site can move forward in a more positive way. Just my 0.02 cts. YMMV

I remember not too long ago when moderators were begging us for content on MTBR to show to advertisers for revenue, in the form of writing up Reviews, and for doing so, they would extend the length of your sword. Posters making posts here ARE the content of MTBR that generates revenue dollars. The moderators work for free, while a few folks up at the top collect the advertising revenue checks on posts that all of us make on the bulletin board.

For a while there, I was an Outdoors writer / photojournalist for the Los Angeles Daily News. The internet and Bulletin Boards put an end to that, bored people will write and post for free on the internet about outdoors activities, for everyone to read, for free.

No paycheck, I stopped writing and taking pictures. You'll notice the shills and the folks that run a bike business like building wheels or Mikesee are the ones posting up the most photo content, and all of his photos are watermarked. It's spam, Mike is too cheap to pay for advertising here on MTBR.

It is a unique business model, MTBR rely's on its regular posters for product, then turns around and sells it to advertisers, in the form of hits, or peak traffic numbers. Without us posting, they have no content to sell, no hits, no revenue generators without those hits.

So what are you sayin Randy? That mtbr is a facade for someone's get rich plan, it's a conspiracy, or are you looking to get paid? Don't see how that matters or suggests anything to improve things, and if you come here to enjoy the members, or add to or take in some info and it's free what's the beef

MTBR has gone from a place of 'just hangin out' to profiteering off of an industry that is seemingly progressing at an uncontrollable rate. That, my friend, is mostly the fault of the consumer.
It's still a win win for the mtb community. What better way to share info from consumers, pretty much asap, than personal experience and for free. Even I, who pretty much knows everything already, have learned a ton from mtbr.
But I agree, you can either police the members and content for the sake of keeping the place clean and respectful for even the youngest of people, or you can sell out to hits and let the place become a zoo. Seems that mtbr has been choosing more of the later lately.

    Wow...
Mojo Troll - "Please stop passing judgement on me." Impossible, your recent posts are inflammatory, judgmental, appear to stir the pot, and create a (-) effect.

Well I am a noob still (only joined in june) and I don't think it was intimidating at all. Most people here actually welcomed me and I don't think I ever went into red (got a few red chics but never went into the red).

I think a lot of the new members are going in the red is because they are posting one word anwsers, like interesting, and not really participating so they can hit their 10 posts before they can create a thread asking what bike they should buy. So they do bring it on themselves some times. Maybe get rid of the neg reps all together and that might solve some problems.

What he is saying, is that the value to the owners of MTBR, is the members.
In short is a deal between the members and the owners, that the owners supply a reasonable environment that keeps the contributing members reasonably happy, and the members supply the content.

Once the owners fail to offer a reasonable environment, that keeps the contributing members reasonably happy, the content suffers, which is bad business for the owners.

So to spell it out, the owners are dependent on the members, and once they fail to see that, things goes downhill real quick.
What we have seen here in the last couple of weeks, is a prime example of just that.

I'm not sure I see a beef in Randy's remarks. It comes across to me a statement that, although we enjoy the use of the forum free of charge, our participation has monetary value for the site owners.

Seems an interesting business model, wealth is generated and the users benefit in form of information and entertainment.

Still, my question is how does the rep system mutually benefit both parties? This is the only forum I visit having instituted such a system and I am truly curious.

Rep creates content which drives up viewer and post numbers which drive revenues.

I've read that before but I am unclear how Rep creates content unless the idea is that rep attracts more activity then would be without it.

I don't think MTBR was ever intended to be a place of 'just hanging out'. My guess is that it was always intended to be a place of profiteering.

I've built hundreds of websites and not one of my clients was in it just to provide a nice place to be. A lot of them have made sites about subjects that they have no interest in whatsoever, simply because they thought there was money to be made.
