We ride in some areas nearing Collingwood Ontario that have caves in the escarpment

We explored some of the caves. We thought we were the only visitors to go inside (we needed our lights) one of these escarpment caves ... we were surprised to find some old stubby beer bottles in a cavern

the official spelunker thread... post up pics!

I have been in a few ranging from the touristy Mammoth Cave to the rugged and lightly traveled, and locked to most of the general public. Some of which are closed now due to white nose syndrome. Don't have a single good pic. I have lots of cool memories.

Wow you two sure have some amazing countryside to ride in. I'm like Natehawk I've been in a couple caves but have no pictures but just memories. Aa a kid we used to find caves in the Adirondacks and in Colorado there is one very close to me. Years ago I went in and it's a tunnel that goes about 100 yards all the way through a mountain. Although I'm pretty sure it's man made for mining many years ago. Pretty cool none the less. You can walk through bending down a bit and it's completely dark until half way through where it turns slightly. Then you can see daylight quite aways away. Funny you brought this up. My brother was in town this past weekend for my sister's wedding and ironically we drove by that cave. Old story's and memories were told but unfortunately it has since been blocked off with boulders keeping out any further exploring.

Nothing as b!tchen as Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. That sucker goes waaaay down. Being at the mouth of the cave at sunset will get you surrounded by thousands of bats.

Lucky you, I've always wanted to check that out. The bats coming out by the thousands must be quite a sight.

Funny you should start this thread now SS.

A friend of ours has been wanting to take us caving for quite a while now, and we finally managed to make the trip last Saturday.
I sort of expected it to be a bit sanitised and generally safe since they are open to the public, but there was significant scope for things to go horribly wrong. It had a fair amount of clambering over sketchy boulders and crawling through tiny tunnels on your belly. We went in as far as we could. I was wearing my bike helmet with 4k lumens on tap if required, but running them on low. But in a few places I had to take the helmet and camelbak off and either push them along in front of me or pass them through a gap and then crawl under something to get to them.

It was pretty cool, but not as cool as the same amount of time spent mountain biking. My wife was a total champ and didn't flinch at any of the obstacles.

Errr, nope, not for me... I am afraid I am a creature that needs to be surrounded with air, not earth, fire or water... I am happy to look at these nice pictures!

the official spelunker thread... post up pics!

I've been to Carlsbad Cavern, Calaveras Caverns, in central California, and the Modoc Lava Tubes in far northern California.
I saw the ice caves at Modoc before they were closed off to the public. Very beautiful.

My shots were taken in the Waipu Caves, Waipu, Northland, New Zealand.
Since my wife is a native New Mexican, getting surrounded in bats at Carlsbad is definitely on our list of things to do.
