    NFL Football Discussion Thread

I know we have a thread for college football. I don't think we have one for the NFL. So here we go. Your favorite team?

    GO NINERS!!

(BTW Antone recall what the college football thread was labeled?)

Hehe, that's a realistic goal if I ever saw one..

I've got no favorite team as such, but I like tough defense and love smash mouth offense like the Steelers used to do with Jerome Bettis. I love watching Steelers-Ravens, Ravens-Bears, those kind of slug fests where everyone goes home with their teeth in a bag after the match. I miss the hard hits from a guy like John Lynch, knocking players out of their shoes.

Force me to choose and I'll probably end up leaning towards Steelers although I think they should run the ball more. Ravens and Bears are among my favorite teams too. For some peculiar reason I've always fancied the Bengals too, they lose so many games by a very slim margin and I never cease hoping that this season will be the one where they finally get the margins on their side and do something great.

Colts fan for as long as I remember. But that doesn't go back to the Baltimore days.

I think they've got a shot at a .500 season, or possibly just barely a winning season this year. Playoffs? Not terribly likely, but depends on everybody else in the division. Next year, they should put on a nice show.

Broncos fan forever but live closer to Seahawks so I follow them as well.

We'll see how this Russell Wilson thing works out. He definitely won the job but let's see how he does when the games count.

I don't think Seahawks fans need to worry about quarterbacks so much. y'all have a pretty good backup over there.

May actually do something IF RGIII ends up being a decent QB.

Saw Andrew Luck play against the 'Skins...an awesome pick
but the 'skins also have Griffin who's another rookie sensation.
Luck plays like a seasoned player already so the Colts may have a good chance

Luck will be better in a year or 2, but RGIII has the better supporting cast right now.

Hopefully that means the 'Skins will have a non-losing record at the end of the year.

Cards fan since they came to town in '88. I've suffered for a very long time.

All I want for Christmas is a quarterback. I'm thinking of knocking on Kurt Warner's door after work tonight to make one final plea.

In the game on Sunday, it looked that way on the scoreline. However, looking at things a little more closely, I see primarily two things that affected the outcome.

The biggie was the running game. Washington was definitely better. I think part of that is that the Colts D has some injuries (already...yeah). With the defense-oriented coaching staff, I hope they manage to adapt. Another part is that the Colts are missing more than one of their running backs high on the depth charts.

The supporting cast is there, but they can't help if they're hurt.

Stack up Luck's numbers and RGIII's numbers side-by-side and you get a different picture.

Which I why I said RGII has the better supporting cast right now. Injuries do matter as you can only filed the players you have.

Time will tell which is the better QB. I suspect we will see lots of rookie mistakes from both.

What a tough gig you have! A little glory back in Warner's day and now you got Skelton and Kolb-yuck. I feel bad for Larry because he's an awesome receiver with no QB to throw him the ball.

Denver really started to look better against SF. Especially Manning with 2 TDs in 1 quarter. They were winning while he was in the game!

Amen brother! Fitz is not only the best WR (or in the top two) over the last 4 years or so but he is also an absolute poster boy for everything that is right in sports. In fact I'm only mildly ashamed to admit I have a 'man-crush' on him.

He deserves better than this mess. I can only hope the defense is super solid and the run game works. Beanie Wells is super talented, big and quick but often hurt...but Ryan Williams out of V. Tech who had an awful injury that kept him out his entire rookie year looks like the real deal. Dude has great vision and is quick. Some guys just look like they belong, so far he is one of them. Time will tell. Hoping for the best and as always, prepared for the worst.

I said it before the season, and I'll say it again. Dom Capers is well past his prime. It's time for the Pack to bring in a new defensive coordinator. We still suck on D. Our offensive line will get better, and the atrocious, pro-49er replacement refs will soon be unemployed, but Capers has got to go!!

I was disappointed that I couldn't actually watch Luck in action.

Some good moments and some bad. Too many turnovers, namely. I hope those things are merely symptoms of a young team and they'll get better as the season goes on. I did appreciate that the team put points on the board defensively, through the running game, and through the passing game.

The defense let the Bears O do too much, especially in the running game (3 rushing TD's, yeah), but there were some good series where they backed Cutler up for a 3-and-out with a net loss of yardage. I want to see more of that as the season goes on.

And to give the Bears their due, they've got a very good defense, anyway. likely one of the best Luck will see this year. And they've got some offensive weapons they put to good use.

I hope Freeney's injury is not a major one. But Mathis seems to be adapting to his new position well enough. I am disappointed that I didn't see Dwayne Allen with any receptions. Not surprised that Coby Fleener had 82 yds, but I'd have liked to see Allen get a few receptions.

    No.

It's only the fans and media that have such knee-jerk reactions to one game of what might be a 15 year career.

He looked great but he's on a better team I think as well. I've seen a bit of Luck and I can't imagine he won't grow into a fantastic QB. In 3 years we'll see how things shape up for both.

    Hell-f'n-no

Luck's and Manning's first games were quite comparable. Luck had a lower completion percentage and a couple fewer yards per attempt. But both had just over 300 yards, 3 interceptions, and one TD.

Andrew Luck vs. Peyton Manning: How Did Their First Colts Game Compare? | Bleacher Report

And nobody would ever say that drafting Manning was a mistake. It is still early. There were flashes of brilliance, just as there were with Manning. What matters is where he goes from here. Does he work hard to avoid repeating mistakes? Or does he tank? Too early to say.

    Niners look good.

My Cards pulled out a great one despite a late game fumble. Had to watch some of it from an airport cafe while traveling, even tried to move my flight back to watch the game, LOL.

Cardiac Cards beat the Pats in their own place...first home opener loss for the Pats in 10 years. Cards defense looks GREAT!

I've got to say that being a Seahawks fan currently living in Texas it was a great day yesterday watching the Cowgirls get their ass handed to them by the hawks. Then this morning getting to listen to the cowboys radio station crying about the ass whoopin they got.

Tough loss. I can't believe the call to attempt the 62 yd field goal either. Still early on in the season though.

So what's the word on the street over there? Cowboys lost or the Seahawks were the better team? I was worried after the opening loss to the Cards (who seem to be a bit better than many expected) but yesterday's win was really nice (although I missed the game due to an awesome day in the saddle!).

The word down here is that Dallas made some mistakes, the refs made bad calls and they can't believe they lost to such an inferior team They're also really butt hurt down here over the massive block Golden Tate put on Sean Lee. He clearly lead with his shoulder and Sean Lee was far from being a defenseless player. They're just mad that a rookie wide reciever that weighs 195lbs laid out their "bad@ss" 245lb linebacker.

That block was freakin awesome! I never knew Golden had it in him. I figured the Dallas folks would be looking for excuses for the loss. Hey they got outplayed big time and lost the game.

that was an awesome block. receiver planted his feet well, crouched, and drove his shoulder pad UP into the defender's chest pads, raising him off his feet. I don't care who you are, you're going down with a hit like that.

[QUOTE=AZ.MTNS;9697637]I quit watching when Chuck Cecil got fined 40 thousand for a clean, legal hit.[/QUOTE

Chuck Cecil couldn't tackle or cover. The Human Missile was a big on hitting (or headhunting) but wasn't a very good football player per se. There is probably a pretty long list of guys like that though, their days are all but over.

    It just got tougher.

Orakpo and Carriker, 2 of the starting front 7 of the D, are out for the season.

Whoa!!! 2 interceptions for 10 points in the first 5 minutes. Peyton is throwing ducks and it looks like he has happy feet.. This will be interesting.

it was sad to see him go, but the right decision for the Colts to make. I'd have preferred a smoother transition that didn't involve last season, though.

    Go Cards!

Defense is really coming together. After holding the Pats for 3 3/4 quarters, hated to see that fumble. But was happy to see the outcome.

As a Seahawk fan I'll say the Cardinals look like they just might be for real. How about the NFC West this year? It just might be the new black and blue division! Should be entertaining to watch.

He's throwing a lot of floaters and wobbly passes. He's just not the same for sure. I just read where he will be pulled in favor of Brock Osweiler if they need a hail mary.

He's played 8 quarters and 7 of them were good so I don't think the sky is falling yet. Besides, his bad passes are still often better than Tebow's good ones.

Even at his less-than-100%-form, he's absolutely better than Tebow could ever dream of being. It was a smart move for Denver to get him while they could. But also smart for the Colts to let him move on where they could get more value by drafting one of the young hotshot QB's in the draft this year.

I don't think Andrew Luck is much of a hotshot. His team in college got beat repeatably by the Ducks.

oo, a few college games out of many tells the whole story, right? from what I've seen so far, he's a solid rookie QB worth a high draft pick. Few rookie QB's have been better to this point. But of course his true value won't be known until late in his career *coughRyanLeafcough*

Fact is, that Manning is on the back side of his career. Nobody knows how many years he has left after his surgery. Depends on how well he gets protected. And if last year at the Colts was any indication, it wouldn't have been very long with those guys and with how immobile Manning is in the pocket on a good day.

Whoever Thomas is or was, he was not in the draft this year so whether he was better is irrelevant for the Colts

Actually he was in the draft. He just wasn't picked by anyone. Very surprising since the Ducks were the top ranked team that year.

Undrafted guys sometimes make waves in the league later on but more often than not if a guy isn't drafted there is a good reason why

Darron thomas ran the Oregon option read offense which isn't a very valuable skill for an NFL QB. Whereas Luck ran a more NFL style offense in which he had to read the defense, stand in the pocket and make a throw. I think the NFL got it right-Luck is a good pick and Thomas was not drafted.

except that the option rarely even works as a trick play in the NFL. let alone as the basis for an entire offense. NFL defenses are too fast and too smart for the option to work consistently.

It never does any good debating football with a "homer". It's futile. And let's face it, Kona is a Duck homer. He sees all things Duck through rose colored glasses.

You gotta keep your head on a swivel son. Amazing that if Lee had been looking just a little bit more down field probably no fine. Funny that hit wasn't even flagged during the game as well. I've noticed that the Dallas media calls it a blindside whereas in Seattle it's a big hit-amusing difference in perspective. Anyhow to me that's a good hard football play and I don't have a problem with it.

Lot's of energy up here for Monday night against Green Bay. Let's see if the Seahawks can keep this thing going.

    My thoughts exactly.

Hopefully monday they will play good physical D like last weekend. I think that had a lot to do with all the dropped passes.

    OT a bit but...

I just spent a week in Dallas. I've always known Texas is THE hotbed for high school football in this country... Friday Night Lights and all, but I was floored when my instructor was talking about football and the stories he had. His son played in 'club' level league, (where 8th grade boys go to a combine to make teams which are all privately owned like a business) ,with guys who have gone on to play in the NFL....Sam Ocho for one played against his kid and is now with the Cardinals. He said Ocho, even in a league of 'elites' was a man among boys back then.

Anyway my point is they have built a 60 million dollar high school stadium in Allen, Texas. It's in a town of just 88 thousand people or so and is being paid for by the taxpayers, they voted for it in a landslide. 60 MILLION DOLLARS! Nearly 1/4 of the towns population can fit into that stadium on a Friday night.

Ya, the city of Mesa (Phoenix suburb) voted down a new Cardinals stadium a few years back. That place would have been 15 minutes from my house. They ended up in Glendale 45 minutes away, and in the middle of nowhere. The Mesa/Tempe location would have been central and just minutes from ASU and the college scene. Oh well. It's never an easy proposition to help publicly fund this kind of stuff. Lots to consider.

As to the Chargers...at what game this year do they go to sleep?

Cards are a 4 point favorite at home over the Eagles!!! I think I just saw a heard of pigs fly by.

    Go CARDS!

Cards beat the crap out of Philly! What a game. I'd bet Vick has a real hard time getting out of bed tomorrow.

That Philly team is talented on both offense and defense but man, are they soft. Even that Philly defensive secondary is way soft.

Cards defense looks as good as any in the league right now. Vicious.
