Hilarious! Ya gotta love the Onion.

For those not wanting to open it for fear of a gruesome sight. Fear not it's all animated.

OK. That was funny! Kinda puts the whole death penalty thing into perspective. Capital punishment will never be pretty.

Seriously though, an old fashioned firing squad, manned by certified sharpshooters, would be absolutely painless. A .30 caliber high velocity bullet dissecting the cranial vault means lights-out within milliseconds.

How about sitting in a chair and an automated arm fires a bullet to the brain. Lights out!
I can't believe In today's technology a simple painless quick assassination with complete automatization is so hard to figure out.

If the death penalty is supposed to be a deterrent, wouldn't it be better if its application hurt?

Of course, but it's an extremely PC world we live in these days

There's that pesky Constitution that might have something to say about a painful execution.

It's a puzzle and no mistake. The fellow is deemed so rotten that the only fate befitting is death, a child rapist murderer or the like, yet you are supposed to care about how painful the last few seconds of his life are? It's fine for him to suffer the anticipation of his execution for years but the last few seconds have to be nice? Pretty strange, especially considering that he will be dead very soon afterwards so the exact manor of his demise will make zero odds to him.

Next they'll ban lead bullets in case soldiers give their targets lead poisoning...

I am a European by birth and upbringing, and I subscribe to the view that Gandhi voiced when he said that "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". The European Union has made the abolition of the death penalty a prerequisite to joining the EU. There are a great many in this country who agree with this too.

I feel the death penalty has become little more than a way to exact revenge rather than deterrence or rehabilitation. There is myriad evidence that it is simply not the deterrent it is claimed to be, and most countries in the world have banned the practice. To defend making the death penalty painful as well as terminal is irrelevant in my opinion, it should not exist in the first place. Those who claim it to be better to put inmates to death rather than have taxpayers pay for lifelong incarceration should think about reading up on the real costs of maintaining the death penalty system, with all its attendant legal shenanigans. It is rather more expensive than the alternative. There is also the little matter of the racial makeup of death row inmates, and the documented cases of innocent people being executed. That is not to be taken lightly.

I suspect I may have to post up a whole bunch of surfing babes to dispel the inevitable sh*tstorm of invective about to come at me, but I do feel the way I do

No that's not what I'm saying at all. However we are a country and society of law. Once we deprive the rights of the worst then it gets that much easier to strip the rights of the deserved.

Europe is not a country, yet, and please explain how the death penalty could possibly be considered rehabilitation? ;0)

What I find interesting is that bleeding-heart liberal policies tend to make life better only for the people who are making other people's lives worse.

Hang on. You're killing the guy! Don't you think that might cause him to feel pretty deprived?!! Or will he think 'Ok, you're sticking me in the box full of toxic gas but as long as you're polite about it I'm cool'?

Meh, I've found that logic and reason are lost on the liberal mind...I'll save the energy I would have expended presenting my treatise on deterrence vs retribution (and the nuances thereof) for my middle ring assault on Hell Hill this afternoon.
