Let's also remember the innocent civilians that have died at the hands of the 'war machine' this Memorial Day. I am proud to have served - but I think it is ultimately the 'powers that be' that command pawns into the line of fire.

Maybe you should move to North Korea dell.. My country, OUR country appreciates and defends the freedoms WE have. Those like you do nothing other than take advantage of the opportunity which is provided. Respect my friend.. learn it.

When I was growing up my parents use to refer to Memorial Day as Decoration Day where we'd go to our cemetary and place flags around the veterans' graves. Thank-you to those who served and rest in peace to the fallen.

    highdell served in US Navy.

As he said (in different words), a soldier is an extension of politics. Whether you, I , or him agree with the politics and policies is beside the point here.

Also, civilian suffering, "collateral damage" and otherwise, is a thing that really exists. Even just a couple of Government temp jobs in Peace Keeping gave me some personal insights about that.

to forget that there are innocent civilians killed (on both sides) in the ugliness that is war is like putting your head in the sand.

    Memorial Day...

Just remember, "All gave some, some gave all." As a wounded vet that knows heroes that died in combat, this will always be a somber holiday for me, not just a day for grilling and drinking, but a day of rememberance.

    In Flanders Field

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

In the UK from where my Dad and Grandfather served we have Remembrance Day, in Australia from where my Mum's family served they have Anzac Day, and here where I live we have Memorial Day. I am not sure what they have in N Korea, but I am sure they have their version too, as does pretty much every country in the world. I choose to also think of the sadness of any loss caused by war, and I salute those that have genuinely given their all in the justified cause of freedom. I do agree with Dell that there are others worthy of our thoughts at this and at any other time, 'Lest We Forget' has many valid interpretations.

Yes, civilian casualites occur during war. So go start a different ****ing thread about it if it bothers you that much. This one is about Memorial Day.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.
