    making big ticket purchases

how much do you think about it before making a big ticket purchase like a nice mountain bike with 4 digit price tag? i am married, middle aged, have a nice income, house, car pymt, etc etc but still thought long and hard recently before buying an entry level MTB for all of $600. How did you pay for the bike with a 4 digit price? credit card? cash you had saved up?

Credit card, cash, cash in some stock, take a loan out. What's the difference it all comes out of your pocket in the end. What you need to decide is what your priorities are and what you can, afford. It is a recreational hobby and not a necessity. A cheap bike will get the job done for awhile. But eventually your going to want a better bike. So IMO go for what you can afford and not piss off the wife but will fit your need's to begin with.

I get my concert tickets free... also most of my airline tickets. If I need to fly privately I use air miles. When I lived in London, I used to jump off the bus before the ticket collector came round, and on the train I would hide in the toilet.

    Did I miss something?

Only problem was, when they got wise, the ticket collectors flushed and I would end up bouncing down the tracks after the train...

I bought my first full suspension 29 at no more than $600 at a time, most of what I bought was used. $600 for a used frame, $180 for used wheels, new tubes, tires, cranks, chain, cassette, and brakes. Think the frame was the last item I bought, when building my original Niner RIP 9. I was in it for like $1800 back in 2009, and it was built just the way I liked it. Very lucky I never broke that frame at the chain stays standing and mashing. I had most of the parts for the bike before I even found the exact used frame I was looking for.

I have, in short order, cracked every round tube frame I ever owned, save this Niner RIP V1.1 Yeah, it was that good.

I worked hard through the summer and fall of 2012 to build a 2012 Commencal FS with XT drivechain and Fox Boxxer, so that I wouldn't use my savings on the build. It ended up being stolen by someone I thought was a friend. Renters insurance gave me 2/3rds the value of the bike back, he's in jail for three more years!

Buy $600 worth of god quality coke and grab some baking powder, and do some mixing and baking, that will get you 3k's worth of crack, thats a good start.

Cook about 10 packs of phudoethydrine and start cooking, that will get you a few thousand if made well.

Grow weed in a spare room, thats a solid earner.

Wow that sucks man I hope that experience didn't turn you off of owning a nice bike. And we need more info. on that story if you don't mind. How did he get caught and how long was he your friend. And where did this happen. And did he have priors in order to get a sentence like that. Sorry curious George has to know.

    No, not at all!

He was caught by me two weeks later, after I found my wheels laying in his apartment. He tried to say they were his while I was calling the police. He didn't realize that every serial number of every part that was on that bike was wrote down on paper and stuffed into my wallet. When the police came, he confessed to selling the frame, crank and forks to a private person over Craigslist who lives in another city 3 hours away.

I was able to recover lots of parts that were not sold on the frame; seat, seatpost, pedals, BB5's, Thomas stem, Renthal handlebar, front and back SLX derailleurs and shifters with HG61 cassette & KMC 9.93 chain... OT: Since I want to go 10spd, all of this has been sitting in a box since I got it back, except the BB5's, stem and bar, I sold those. I'm going to leave all of the stock components on my current 2009 Giant Revel frame until I have all my desired upgrades.

    ... A few weeks later...

Found out at the property theft trial that he had priors for home invasion and burglary. 3 of them!

Moral of the story, don't trust people you meet at bars.

Right now I have almost a full 10spd XT drivechain(just need front derailleur and crankset) , x2 26" XT-Inferno31 wheels, BB7's front(160mm) and back(160mm) with Speed-dial 7's for both, Spank Spike Flats & Spank Spike 777 EVO 30mm riser bar; all that plus cabling, housing, ferrules, cable ends and bags of different bolts are hanging from string from the ceiling in my bedroom, kind of like a mobile over a crib.

Currently trying to figure out what suspension fork I should buy in a 120mm travel, not looking for anything spendy unless it's a Lefty. I'm collecting these parts to put on my Second hand 2009 Giant Revel until I can afford a new/used FS frame.

...And, this time I will epoxy a LoJack chip into place.
I drive more when the streets need repairs! -'95 ZJ
