INSOMNIA...the new and improved insomnia thread..help.

"Don't be fooled by any of the previous cheap imitations "

I have been getting insomnia more and more it seems. I don't have an excessive amount of caffeine in my diet. One venti coffee in the morning a few sips then finish it on my 9:30 am break. No more caffeine the rest of the day. Yet here I am at 1:00 am. Wide awake and have to be up for work at 5:15 am I know that there have been other insomnia threads in the past but this one is the new and improved one. So any suggestions may be taken to heart. Bring it!

Oh and be quiet on your delivery I'm trying to sleep.

Melatonin works for me. With beer. And I'm a notorious non sleeper.

First try melatonin, or an OTC sleep aid (diphenhydramine).

If that doesn't work, go for the big guns like Ambien. Fair warning about this stuff. You may sleep walk, or run, or drive a motor vehicle, or do something that you have no idea you are doing. It's perfectly safe. Really, it is!

A slug of Jack Daniels can do the trick or glass of wine or a shot of Nyquil.

I've also heard that an upper cut to the lower jaw can put your lights out.

BTW, I took Ambien last night so I will have no recollection of ever posting here.

Now go to sleep dammit and stop bothering us!

I have insomnia too but I also have never required more than 6 hours of sleep. When I was a frontline staff nurse I worked 12 hour shifts: days and and nights (for years!). I'd come home after a busy, crazy shift and could not fall asleep. My circadian rhythms would get messed up because of the constant switching from days and nights.

I can't explain my insomnia now... stress?, age? hormones?... I dunno. For me it's more of a problem falling asleep, than getting enough sleep.

In the past I tried taking medication to knock myself out especially when I used to work weeks and weeks of 12 hour night shifts. But it just messed up my mind and body. I'd be too groggy the next day and I worried I'd screw up at work. But over the years I learned some methods that work for me.

Eliminate sounds, dark, cool bedroom. stretch

I use meditative relaxation techniques. When thoughts or images enter my mind I think "black" and erase them or open my eyes and start again.
Relax your jaw and let your tongue float between your teeth and not touch your palate.
Then start counting backwards from 100

Maybe some of this might help

I'm one of the sleep challenged myself. It's a real bear to fall asleep and I haven't had more than 6 hrs sleep since forever. I can't get to sleep without some quiet background noise, which for me is simply the radio. It seems as though I can't quite turn my brain off and so in a quiet room I focus inward too much. I'm thinking about giving melatonin a try one of these nights.

I only smoke weed when I need to,
And I need to get some rest, Yo, where's the Cess,
I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress,
Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty,
And on the count of three I pull back the duvet,
Make my way to the refrigerator,
One dry potato inside, no lie
    Not even bread, jam,
When the light above my head went bam!
    I can't sleep, something's all over me,
    Greasy, insomnia please release me,
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth.
    But there's no relief,
I'm wide awake in my kitchen,
    It's black and I'm lonely,
Oh, if I could only get some sleep,
Creeky noises make my skin creep,
I need to get some sleep,
    I can't get no sleep....

I can fall asleep no problem. The issue I face is waking up somewhere between 3-4 am just about every morning (even after long MTB rides and other forms of strenuous exercise during the day). I know that a lot of it has to do with a hectic work schedule because when I travel elsewhere (particularly on vacation) I do not wake up very often.

Most of the time I can get back to sleep after a half hour or more. On the rare occasions I can't, I get up and do stuff for an hour or so ((write wth pen and paper, read book, mag in low light) something non-LCD screen related) and then go back to sleep for a couple of hours.

I've been doing IT work for almost 30 years and learned long ago that glowing screens at night stimulate the brain for most and can make going to sleep more challenging. My suggestions to those who have challenges falling asleep: stop watching TV or playing on the computer at least a couple of hours before you go to sleep (definitely no laptop/tablet in bed- even for reading!). TV in bedroom is also BAD...

Happy to hear that you weren't booted but I worry that you might really go over board in the future. Whatever you do, don't send disparaging remarks regarding his wife. Same goes for porn. Since he's an understanding guy, maybe you should ask for a raise.

I've got the same problem. Once I'm out, I'm out, but getting there is the problem. Usually I'm plenty tired, but I just can't get my brain to shut the f*ck up.

Wow. You actually had the iconic Ambien side effect! All's it ever did to me was make me have such weird dreams that I'd wake up and not be able to go to sleep again.

Two things have helped me with insomnia. I almost always get a good nights rest after a heavy mtn bike ride with a minimum of 2500 feet vertical continuous climb here in So Cal, along with great single track descent, on an evening /night ride. Best if finished up 2 to 3 hours before bed time. The other is sexual activity at bed time, get some from the Wife, GF, Significant other, partner, what ever. Very relaxing, roll over afterwards and fall asleep. Pleasuring one's self doesn't work at helping insomnia like a loving partner does, not the same effect.

YMMV, these work well for me.

It's been clinically proven that rubbing out a good one is a natural sleep inducer, especially after a few beers.

Trust me this is a lot better than waking up in a cop car naked going to your parents trying to expalain to the cops why they picked you up running around naked armed with a lighter locked out of your own apartment. And when you see the sig sauers you know, that if you make one wrong move here, its all over. But still your'e naked and you have a lighter and can't really go anywhere.

    It's back...

    Insomnia
It's 1:00 a.m. and I'm wide away. I just let the dog out to do his duty and Its a full moon and almost as bright as daylight out there. I'm thinking this full moon cycle may just coincide with my insomnia.
Just a thought maybe its just the amount of stress I'm under.

The moon was amazing two nights ago- cast huge shadows (when I was AWAKE for an hour or so in the middle of the night).

My friends say I smile more when there is a full moon; I don't really remember much...

Sounds similar to the effects of meth from what users have told me.

Ambien not only did not work well for me but it led to some interesting antics.
I would take it and then get up and do things around the house. Usually i would remove my pants and then start cooking ground beef in the dryer.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally open the LSD bottle?

This stuff works for me also but my body quickly becomes immune to it so I shift around between 3 different sleeping aids when I am having insomnia issues. the third is an antihistimine but of the three I use, this one leaves me the most groggy in the morning.

Some heavy indica. Good late afternoon ride followed by some good meal and shower. Good book. Woolen pyjamas. Pitch dark room.
Separate bedrooms. My wife likes this one too. We visit in the morning though

I've heard of melatonin resistance. I've been on the stuff for about 2 months now and I'm keeping eye on this possibility. I've been thinking about going off it periodically to prevent this but I'm addicted to sleep right now and I'm worried I'll go back to poor sleep if I stop.

Do not discount what 2 or 3 big slugs off a Jack Daniels bottle could do for you right before bed if all else fails. Not joking.

Funny, that's what just one or two beers do to me these days. I have never been a heavy drinker though, even while at college.
Another sleep enhance - nice stretch and some yoga poses just before bed.

Now that's therapy I can get get behind. I think one set of my grandparents would occasionally take whiskey with a bit of honey before bed.

A belly full of beer (or anything for that matter) is not going to feel all that comfortable in a sleeping position. Whiskey is far stronger so you don't need to put much into your system to get the effect. Besides that, hard liquor buzzes are waaaay better than beer buzzes.

    That's what I have heard.
I only drink water and teas nowadays.
Chamomile tea before sleep does wonders as well.

    DJ - here's some ideas.

Insomnia treatment: Cognitive behavioral therapy instead of sleeping pills - Mayo Clinic

CBT for Insomnia: Techniques & Case Study - National Sleep Foundation

If after reading these articles you don't find yourself asleep, you are doing something wrong.

Things that have worked form me:
I use one of these to wake me up. I have many early morning meetings and the sun doesn't rise until late in the morning for many months of the year. With this clock, I can wake as early as 5am and not feel like someone beat my head with a bat.
    http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HF3520...p_ob_title_hpc

Zero caffeine after about 2 in the afternoon. Most days I don't drink anything with caffeine. Those are good days.

Be careful with exercise and timing. I sometimes ride at night. That usually means delayed sleep. Getting up early in the morning to exercise helps me.

We have a zero-electronics bedroom (except for the sunlight alarm clock). No ipads, phones, computers.

Just got the new Mountain Bike Action magazine. Has a test on the Domahidy bike frame. So incredibly unimaginative, except for conning people into crowdfunding.

I fell asleep looking at the pictures. The last time I fell asleep like this was after drinking half a bottle of Nyquil, and waking up on the bathroom floor, freezing my ass off, with drool coming out of the corners of my mouth.

2005 called and wants their 71.5 HTA back.

I looked, and that is for 80mm fork. Not too horrible. 70.5 on 100mm, which is about right for 44mm offset.

1000 for a 853 steel frame is not too horrible either.

It's about 1am. I went to bed at 10pm, woke up at 11:30 and now can't fall back asleep. It's too late to take a Unisom or anything and I have to get up at 6am.

I was just laying there thinking of various things, not one of them even important but it's keeping me awake dammit.
