    The Ice Cream Thread...

What's your favoriye ice cream brands and flavors. I must, admit,I'm kind of a snob when it,comes to ice cream I like the higher end brands. I love dark chocolate and if it's mixed with vanilla that's the best. Or chocolate and peanut butter yummy. My new addiction is Haagen - Dazs Gelato Stracciatella, which is Italian style. It is a vanilla sweet cream ice cream with dark chocolate shavings throughout. Awesome! They also have a dark chocolate Gelato ice cream with dark chocolate chunks mixed in. Another newfound favorite of mine. What's yours?

Haagen dazs Belgian Chocolate. Does gelato count? yes! Hazelnut gelato hoo hoo.

For the rest of the TV time, I like Nestle chocolate drumstick with peanuts, oh yeah!

I like espresso chip, but it makes a lousy late night snack.

Chubby Hubby from B&J's is extremely dangerous, so I don't go there but once every couple of years.

I'm waiting for some national brand to make a pumpkin and chocolate chip ice cream. They come out with pumpkin every fall but leave out the chips.

When in doubt, mint chocolate chip.

Haagen Dazs / Dryers Chocolate or Neapolitan that comes in that gallon plastic bucket

I used to work at a Strauss Organic Creamery out in Tomales. They started to make Vanilla , Chocolate and Blackberry Ice Cream by the pint. I'd bring home milk crate fulls of Ice Cream... then have one whole pint a night.

I also love the softserve rocky road at The Pond, Dodger stadium, etc, they are way over priced but so damn good.

Vanilla ice cream scooped into a smoked
Porter or a Russian Imperial Stout.
I do a home brewed RIS with raspberries that is awesome for floats.

Had some home made salted caramel at the Love Apple in Taos at the weekend. A gazillion oralgasms... Otherwise, Frost in Tucson does great gelato, salted caramel again, rum and raisin or pistachio my faves. In the store for a healthier option, So Delicious coconut milk ice cream is very good!

I know salty sweet has become so popular now, I just came back from Fisco, my wife and I had a pound of Chinese sausage cookie, it's like chewy chocolate chip cookie but with Chinese pork sausage. Man! it was awesome!!!

Coconut Bliss. Non dairy, non soy, made of coconut milk and shredded coconut. Low sugar and high fat. Just a perfect, super tasty and healthy snack. Love it every night for the last 2 weeks.

    Bad ice cream...... no!
But is there such thing as too much ice cream?

Several years ago my girlfriend and I went to my brothers house for a BBQ. His GF has an 8 year old daughter. My sister was in town with my 8 year old niece. So my girl friend and I take the two 8 year old girls to the local ice cream shop Frostys. I tell them get what you want. My niece orders a large vanilla cone. So of course the other girl orders the same. So we're waiting and all the cones come out. We hand them out and all of a sudden my brothers girlfriends daughter let's out a whine and starts crying. We are like "what's wrong honey" she say's crying and whaling "it's too big" I look at my girlfriend and we started laughing having never heard a kid say that about ice cream, especially before even one bite. Of course I had to throw a joke out to my girl friend saying "she sounds just like you baby". To this day that whole incident comes up in laughter between us.

The best tasting "ice cream" for me is gelato

Gelato is made from milk and all natural ingredients, which makes it substantially denser.

We go to a local spot called La Paloma. I don't eat any dairy so my choices are limited but they make a Soy version that you can't tell the difference, according to my local foodies.

This place also has 20 different non-dairy fruit flavours and ice cream for diabetics!

    My favorite is chocolate hazelnut

Speaking of too much, some of the B&J's flavors just have too much chunky stuff in it. I don't buy ice cream to eat a candy bar.

Rocky Road, huh? And your user name is Dirty $anchez?

I think D$ might be opening up to us all a little bit here today.

My all time favorite is Choclate Chip. Doesn't matta what brand. I also love RiteAid's Pistachio Nut. I also like BR's Jamoca Almond Fudge. Can never go wrong with plain old vanilla, too.

+1 around the Washignton, DC area, Carmen's has the best gelato. Salted carmel is other worldly. Their lemon gelato has real bits of rind in it! I also get a hankering for lime green with vanilla ice cream here and there as well.

My favorite is my homemade ice cream with vanilla as the flavor. It is the real stuff too! My gramps bought me an ice cream maker for my birthday a few years before he passed and had a recipe card typed (with a typewriter!) and laminated with "Grampy's Favorite Ice Cream" listed at the top. We spent the day together with him teaching me his family recipe and how to "slowly" make it. You don't want it to freeze too fast, and the key is using the right kind of sugar and letting it fully disolve. Some people don't want to try mine because it involves raw eggs, but to me, that is the real way to make it as it doesn't involve cooking it.

You really can't beat homemade ice cream when compared to even the best store bought brand. In addition to vanilla, I have also made fresh blackberry, strawberry and peach. So tasty during summer when the local fruit is fresh.

OK, now I'm going to have to make a batch after reading all these posts!

    The Ice Cream Thread...

I also use eggs, milk, cream, 3 types of sugar and many other things but I heat that mix up to 60 degrees.
Yesterday I bought 95 kg of strawberrys. For every kg i add:
    200gr sugar
    100gr líquid sugar
    50 gr dextrose.

And that's it. No heating for sorbets.

Yes, I mentioned it early on. It was my very first "flavorite" as a child.

    Well it happened again...

It's been awhile since I had ice cream and while in the store today I found the urge drew me to "THE" isle. Yes the dreaded isle with shelf after shelf of total bliss. I knew from past purchases of exactly where my personal favorite was. Without hesitation my urge drew me to the familiar spot. There it was staring me down, Haagen-Dazs Dark Chocolate Chip Gelato. Dark Gelato ice cram with dark chocolate chip chunks strewn throughout. "Are you kidding me" what's not to like. So I snatched up a pint and hurried home. I threw it in the freezer with full intent of having it after tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner. That was not to be as I sat and watched T.V. the thought of this spectacular bounty of total bliss sitting frozen and lonely was overwhelming. I thought to myself I'll just have a couple spoonfuls. So I grabbed it up and sat down to watch some T.V. and yada, yada, yada before I knew it the whole pint was gone.

I like Publix Premium brand. Chocolate Trinity (dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunky bits mixed in) My actual favorite is my step moms home made dark (darrrrrkkkk!) chocolate. I just never get to have any since she lives 1000 miles away. So Publix is next best for me

What can I say I had a craving on the way home from work and it couldn't wait until I got home. All I needed was a chocolate fix. Pulled in to my local Starbucks where the manager girl knows me. All I said is I need some chocolate and I went to the rest room. I came back out to this decadent desert with a glass of milk. She took a chocolate cheesecake swirl and and added whip cream and chocolate drizzle and a hint of caramel swirl. Are you kidding me how could I turn that down.

Yes but it was worth it and no she didn't add her phone # in. I don't think her husband would have appreciated that.

Ice cream has to much sugar, so I don't eat it. I'm hyper as it is, so I prefer not to bounce off the walls.

Why is that ice cream prices go up in cold weather? Maybe it's just me but that's what I've noticed. I remember I had a craving for ice cream once during the winter season and went to the ice cream isle and wtf ice cream prices were stupidly high. I mean wouldn't stores want to push them out around this time with low prices considering that ice cream is more a hot weather treat? Right now prices are higher than summer prices where I live.

I actually worked for an ice cream distributor for a few years. And yes that's true that the prices do go up in the colder months. Ice cream sales actually increase during that time so they raise the prices. The human body craves it more on colder days. Crazy thought but true.

We have one of those Kitchen Aid stand mixers, and we bought the ice cream attachment to go with it. My wife bought a book of ice cream recipes. Right now, I have some home made rocky road in the freezer. I had a bowl after my ride this morning and another bowl after dinner this evening. It is very good but not my favorite. For that, there is a chocolate recipe that came with the ice cream attachment that is unbelievable. Going from memory, you make the ice cream with some unsweetened baking chocolate, some semi sweet baking chocolate, and some cocoa powder (among many other ingredients). Then, after the ice cream has been mixing for a while, you take a couple high quality chocolate bars, chop them up into small pieces, and dump that into the mixer. That's the basic recipe. to which you can add whatever stuff you like - cherries for instance or strawberries or small marshmallows or whatever sounds good. Absolutely the best chocolate ice cream I've ever eaten. Sometimes I put some fudge on top and some chopped nuts. Unreal.

I'm heading into the grocery store right now on a ice cream only mission. Call 911 if you don't hear from me by morning.

My favorite flavor is wild cherry with big dark chocolate chunks. Not too picky about the brand.

We have an ice cream maker. My daughter made green tea gelato that was very good.
