How in the hell do you...

...start a push button car these days?! A client of mine asked me to move one of his cars which is a Lexus IS 350. He gave me the door opener which had a funny looking key-like thing that fit into the opener. I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get the darn thing started. What ever happened to the old key into the ignition thing?

You should see me in a rental car. I can't figure anything out-too many bells and whistles, all located in weird spots. Back in my day....

Find something with a bit of give to run into. Surely if the airbags deploy the engine turns off?

    Then SUE!

Press and hold the start/stop button for 5-10 seconds.
Good luck remembering that when you're trying to dodge traffic at speed.

Hawg my sister bought a new Toyota 4-Runner Limited. It has the same electronic ignition and door locks as the Lexus. Just touching the door handle opens the car if you have the key fob on you. Same with the ignition just push a button. Crazy technology, I know it's been oround for a few years now.

Hawg, the new Lexus system is the bomb. Like DJ said, you put the key in your
pocket and just open the door to get in. To start the car just push the start button.
To turn it off just push the start button again. Its wonderful and I love it.

Hey now! Let's not start the Prius hate again!!!

Like JK said, it's a snip when you know, and I love just walking up to the door and having it unlock automatically. When you walk away you just touch the handle to lock it. With the Prius, you put your foot on the brake pedal and push start... voila! makes sense to me... to turn it off, you just push the button again... that seems pretty fookin simple to me! Not too steep a learning curve even for an old fart like me...

I think the issue is that if you park cars for a living, there's a lot of different 'sequences' to learn!

Edit: The downside is that if you lose the key fob, you're screwed... GOUGED by Toyota!!! Almost $300 bucks to replace it and have it programmed...

    I'm a Prius owner too (2008). 200,000 km. I still get 5 litres/100km
with the back seat down I can carry 2 DH bikes, gear and plenty of room for more. (ie a 3rd or 4th bike)

Does it have to be "in your pocket"? Why? I put it on the center console and tried to start it. It wouldn't start after repeated tries, then it set it's security system as though I was trying to steal it. I unlocked the door by pushing the unlock button on the opener but I did see a little black button on the outside door handle. Did that screw things up???

Does the key thing have to be fully set into the door opener for the car to start? Do I have to push on the brakes or hold the start in for several seconds to make it start???

Will somebody here who has the same car I mentioned originally please tell me EXACTLY what steps to take to get into the car and then start it up. Thanks.

Somebody please tell me that the new Mustang 5.0/GT still uses a key in the ignition??? I really like those, but...

I have the new GS, and it works like I said, but you do have to put
your foot on the brake for it to start. I'm not sure if the IS is the same.
I leave the fob in the center console sometimes and it works fine. I just
went out and tried to get my car to do what happened to you without
success. It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, so I don't know
what the problem could be. Maybe that car doesn't like you for some
reason? Another nice feature is no emergency brake handle. You put
the car in park and the e brake is on, put it in gear and its off.

Hawg, I've unsuccessfully googled how to start an IS 350. All I can find is have the key with you and push the button. Apparently it is so easy nobody has made a youtube video or written some long convoluted blog post. What I'm left concluding on the case is that it is operator error. Somewhere in the two step process you skipped a step.

Good question. We can rule out prius germs, which rank up there with cooties.

Actually regarding car tech, I like the idea of the Chevy Volt more than a Prius. The gas/diesel generator + electric motor powers trains beautifully. It seems like better for cars too and is simpler to engineer. But as you posted, a TDI is a excellent alternative to a hybrid.

Yep very easy as I said 79 posts up ^^^
My sister just bought a brand new Toyota 4-Runner Limited. Toyota and Lexus are the same thing. Lexus is just a fancier version. But the 4-Runner Limited is at the top of the line for Toyota and has the same electronic doors and ignition as the Lexus.

Here is how simple it is. As long as you have the key fob on you all you do is walk up to it. Touch the door handle and it opens. Enter said vehicle and sit on the plush leather electric seat. Glance around at the beautiful interior for a moment then put your foot on the brake and push the ignition button. Then look at yourself in the mirror and smile. Put the gear shift in D for drive. Reach over and crank up Black Sabbath in the 6 CD changer. Punch in your destination on the wide screen GPS and let off the brake and drive off into the sunset. Simple! Got it Hawgster.

The job my Prius does is get me from a to b, sometimes with bikes in or hooked onto it! For fuk-all money! and in comfort! I took a 5 year 'smug cover' policy that protects me from those pesky Prius germs, and I got the "pull away from those big gas-guzzling trucks" button option called 'power mode'. Not quite Lambo power, but it does the job I get so many growly people crawling up my ass even tho I travel 'a little' above the speed limit, I sometimes think I am about to be abducted by anal-probing aliens...

I've been wondering how long it would take for someone to put the blame on me. That's why I started this thread in the first place. In invisible text next to the title of this thread, it says "Hawg's a fool, dump all over him for his inability to simply get a started". I guess you guys couldn't see that part.

In invisible text next to the title of this thread, it says "Hawg's a fool, dump all over him for his inability to simply get a started". I guess you guys couldn't see that part.
You mean I didn't have to write up that big old description above. All I had to say was it's "all you". Man I've gotta catch on to this O.C. trickery.

Hmmm . . . this is a tricky one for sure. I think what you have to do is pull the handle on the outside and open the door, swing your arse into the seat such that you are facing the steering wheel, and pull the door handle from the inside. At that point you must PUSH. THE. BUTTON.

(oh, and usually you have to press the brake pedal )

I'm laughing at the sight of you trying to figure out how to start the thing
