How do you pronounce often? Where did you go to school?

I've been taught to pronounce this word as "offen" with a silent t,
and when I hear anyone say "ofTen" it annoys and drives me crazy. My parents are from New England (without Boston accents) and I went to school in Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. Now in Austin I hear ofTen offen. Websters says either way is acceptable, but I still think it sounds stupid and uneducated. Am I alone on this?
Keep trying to do the awesomest thing you've ever done.

I never gave this much thought until now!

    I don't pronounce the "t"

I don't remember being taught that in school, I thought maybe it's a Canadian thing but I've heard some people pronounce the "t"

I figure t is silent. Like soften, fasten, castle, Christmas... lots of examples

Both ways, like many other words when I can't decide which is correct. It comes from being a kiwi married to an American. For instance, I alternate between pronouncing route as either root or rowt depending on who I'm talking to.

    O.P. You're not alone.
I pronounce often with a silent t as well. And I'm also slightly bothered when it is said with a very pronounced t. I went to school in my early childhood in Rochester N.Y.

It took me awhile to figure out which way I go on this because I was too self conscious when I listened to myself speak the word. Anyhow I say "off ten" but the ten is actually fairly subtle and it almost sounds like offen. I grew up in and educated in Colorado and lived in the western US all my life.

I can't rep you until I spread some more, but that's a the first thing I thought of too. The second was the cartoon picture of the chicken and egg in bed smoking and the chicken says " well I guess that answers that question".
