    Hashing with Kids

We're trying to help my 6 yo improve her endurance, but 'training' is boring esp. for a little girl.

So I stole this from the Hash House Harriers. Except for the beer handups. A Treasure Hunt, with a reward at the end. I laid out the course like a good rabbit.

1st clue at the bottom of the driveway.

My knowledge of G's knowledge of our hood worked perfectly, for a first try. She read and resolved every clue.

lollipops and soccer socks were the payoff

The only improvement would be for the chase to go more than a mile. But it was smart to start small.

She's already bugging me to do it again next weekend.

    Excellent!
The first winter ride with the kids bike club includes hot chocolate and marshmallows around a campfire halfway through the ride. They come around a corner all frozen from the ride and the fire is going & the chocolate is already hot.

Same thing every few rides after that until spring. The kids never fail to show up.

Great! I used to run a "learn to play hockey" thing at the rink. I learned early on that little kids arent interested in traditional hockey drills. I made up a bunch of fun games that would teach them basic skating & hockey skills without even knowing they were learning.

    Awesome chollaball.

I want to try putting on a MTB Easter Egg Hunt next Spring. Gotta think up a way to make it better than just a free-for-all, more like a scavenger hunt, and what you did here is food for thought. Hide the goodies just off-trail and provide a map & clues.

DO EET! you and your kids will have so much fun!

I did our first course through an area the kids know very well from frequent bike rides. This helped them to get a handle on what clues etc were all about. It also let me mix up clues - some were just arrows, others directed them to places they knew, and others were instructions. I worked really hard to make the clues in spots they couldn't fail to see and that would be very unambiguous. In a Hash run, there is some confusion built in by design - I think this would not go well with my kids right now, but maybe in the future.

I've been thinking about this coming weekend's adventure for 2 days - cant wait!
