Hard men/women who make us common folk dabbling in "extreme" look like a joke?

Looking for exemplary sources of inspiration.

Please let's not glorify this. I would hope that extreme sports or unusual everyday life experience should be the focus of this thread...

To me inspiration comes from achieving what others say your can't. Here some some examples of the many inspirational people.

When i was 20 i worked for Mammoth mountain for a season. Made friends with a few first year ski patrol guys from my dorm. That winter they took me cliff jumping a few times. Two and three breather drops (inhale to scream multiple times before you hit).

Fast forward 10 years. Head up to Mammoth with a few friends for a ski weekend. Talking crap the whole ride about how bad ass i am and how im gona jump the cornice for em. We get to the top of the mountain and i go look over the edge to find the steepest spot to jump from.....

My balls crawled up into my stomach. Not only did i not jump, i didnt even go off the lip. We took the cat trails down to the lower mountain.

"Hard" and "Extreme" are for the young, the childless, and those with out work Monday morning. Looking over that edge slapped me in the face with the reality that i would never again be able to risk my life and limbs to that degree. Im ok with it. Ill watch vids of other people doing that crap.

I've jumped the cornice at Mammoth back when I was in my 30's. But that was ages ago, I'd like to think I still have it in me to do at 51. Maybe!

I still surf big days, yea something goes wrong it could kill me.... but i no longer have tow in surfing on the bucket list. Price of failure is just too steep.

Yea i still let brakes go and fly downhill on my bike. Eating crap at 30mph could kill me... but i dont even bother with those giant DH drop offs. Price of failure too steep.

I still play hard as hell, and im sure some would think what i DO is crazy. I know the truth. I play within a comfortable range of control and have no illusions anymore about how big i am willing to go.

I hear ya, there is a few Extreme sports I always excelled in. Snow Skiing, Motocross, Water Skiing and Stand up Freestyle Jet Skiing. I grew up in Colorado so the snow skiing was an every weekend event. From age 8. The only sport out of those I still do is snow skiing. And that is far and few due to today's price per ticket. I took up mountain biking in at age 39. Although I transitioned into it easily due to my motocross background. I never excelled as I wish I would have due to starting later in age. After so many gnarly crashes I tend to get gun shy in the real technical stuff. And I never became a very good climber. But I love the sport and plan on doing it as long as my body permits. For me it has the perfect balance of thrill / nature and staying healthy.

Yes ^^^ George Carlin ^^^ Was a genius in comedy no one since or before can come close to his genius IQ in comedy. Sure there are some greats but none that can go off on a 4 hour tangent and cover so many worldly and every day topics.

I dunno how 'hard' anyone here is, but as for "Looking for exemplary sources of inspiration" I actually look to the people on this website. Seriously, you have everyone from elite level racers to ordinary pedal mashing slobs like myself. No better place to find inspiration than from other people that share a 'passion.'

Yes I have heard Lenny Bruce. A comic who went early on where no other had gone before. Racial and obscenities. He was a genius at what he did. Although in my opinion nobody can hold a candle to the shear mental brain tease that George Carlin can put you through. A fast paced intertwined 4 hour mind blowing act. Much of which is improvised on the spot. This is all due to his enormous intellect and high IQ.

more of a rhetorical question as a way of stating the opinion that bruce is on par with carlin.

bruce was not solely racial and obscenities though they were frequently part of his act. he was the first groundbraking improvisational social satirist that ignored social/cultural norms/rules/boundaries and paved the way for the rest. i certainly respect your opinion of carlin but consider him as a contemporary of bruce in style, ability, intellect, showmanship, satire, IQ, and improvisation rather than surpassing him. lenny was a pro at fast paced intertwined improvisational observation/satire due to his enormous intellect and high IQ when carlin was getting court martialed (three times!) in the air force, working as a DJ in shreveport, and then doing morning shows in fort worth and hollywood. carlin quit radio and began standup at bruce's urging and was even with bruce when he was arrested for obscenity. after they arrested bruce carlin sat around drinking beer and then as one of the last to depart told the cops "i don't believe in government issued ID" as they were checking ID on those leaving the club.

richard pryor and bill hicks are others that are, imho, in the same league as carlin for the same reasons you mentioned.

again, i'm not saying your opinion is wrong but just expressing a different one. imho bruce, carlin, pryor, and hicks are all on equal ground for all the reasons you mentioned. just my .02

I was never a fan enough or followed Lenny Bruce enough to know enough about him for this debate. Obviously you know way more about him and his minglings with Carlin. I certainly learned a thing or two about the both of them from you. All I know is Carlin has always blown my mind in every performance I have heard. As far as Richard Prior / yes he certainly made an impact and has always been held a one of the best. But I for one have a hard time watching him past an hour. He is hilarious but for some reason his style gets to me after so much.
