    Gone crabbing...

Have my son home this weekend... and we went out Crabbing on the N.Cali Coast. Doran beach park to be exact.
Stopped at Scottys bait shop and bought some "holey Mackrel"

I use crab snares for the moment.

You fill the cage with bait, and cast it into the water with a fishing rod and reel. Wait a few mins, then crank it in.

Gets heavy when you have 2-3 crabs hanging off it.

We got there and it was alittle chilly wind coming from the north. So the boy covered up to keep warm.

But, A delema occured when he wanted to have a snack..

    So...

    Using his nogin !!..

    enter the Snack !!

We were fishing a crowded Jetty. the guy next to us was having some trouble just getting any Crab at all, besides a legal one at more than 5 3/4 in. wide.

So the guy next to him, got one keeper and gave it to him... nice other guy.

I was doing well with catching crab, just no 'keepers' ...
Next thing you know, the first guy has 3 more keeprs in the bucket. Us , well , were strugling. a few we snared were just 1/16 in shy.. Drat!.

Bored, the boy goes and plays with some other kids..at the beach.

Then comes back for snacks and a photo shoot.

    .
    .
    .
    .

About 3 hours go by and then... Bingo ! a keeper !! alright, were not going hungry today..

    Whoo. Lets go home

" hey Dad, is it still alive? "

Yeah... but not for long !

in for a chill after cooking , then served with Steak and Broccoli...

The boy loves Crab... he even asked for my half.

Awesome man! I have never done any "crabbing" other than a piece of chicken tied to a string. haha. We used to catch a few crabs that way when I lived in Portugal. I am interested in the "cage" you have. You just tie it to a fishing rod and cast it out? And now I am hungry for crab... thanks..

    Yep,
fill with bait... oh , I put a 2 oz. sinker too. Then give it a toss. Let it sit on the bottom. If the tide is slack, you can keep your line tight and feel the crabs doniking it as they crawl over the cage.
Give it a good pull, they get caught in the snare loops and crank er' in. Dont let the loops go slack or the crab will slip out.
Swing over a bucket or cooler... measure, then Keep or cull.

    Easy peasy..

i dont have any 'crab rings' or traps... But most will toss one of those out and let soak while they are "fishing" the snare. Give you something to do while the trap soaks.

That is cool. I had no idea about that type of trap. Sounds much more fun than waiting for a cage to soak. Thanks for the info.

    Gone crabbing...

Cool stuff. I grew up crabbing for blue crabs. Chicken on a string was the start. I eventually graduated to a cool trap that actually made it possible to get the crabs in the cooler.

All of this reminds me of this shirt I want to buy.
