    The giving help thread...

So I challenge you to post up links to other areas of the forums in which you help a newb, give advice to other members with a question, give input on a component or answer a question someone has, with good intentions.

Basically use this thread to link for what you do to help the site besides hang out in OC. If you don't want to participate that's cool too. This might help the onlookers that venture into OC and think we all just chill in here or give each other reach arounds. It's for the good of the forums and OC.

    For example:
    Mountain Biking Skills Videos

    Most recently....
    Trek 29er's roll call

This is a good idea. Here are a few threads I started that people seemed to have enjoyed:

One from the WI/MN regional forum (that doesn't get much traffic)
    Lebanon Hills -- wonderful experience

One for the general bike culture
    Ode to Dr Seuss

While this one is about my sons, it seemed to stir quite a bit of interest from those that read it

This is a thread series I started in AZ mebbe 2 yrs ago, borrowing from other forums. I've had to give it a kick or carry it some times, but its developed a life of its own now and I'm glad to say its a popular topic.

AZ Photo Friday - Dec. 21st - End of the world edition

So every Friday in AZ you should seem some pics from around our awesome state that includes all manner of desert terrain in Phx and Tucson, high-desert in Prescott, aspen and pines and gnarly DHs in Flagstaff, the White Mtns, and the red rocks in Sedonuts.

    True and why....

True people know that we contribute. Why not make it apparent especially in OC since some people think they should get rid of it, or we "hang out" in here, create rep threads...and so on. Speaking of so, not knocking that thread but, how does one actually earn rep with out pissing everyone off? By contributing, helping. All of us have been in one of "those" threads but the whole rep system was redone because of our rep. Our rep still higher than most.

It helps lower rep members on the site grow. Especially those who hang out in subforums helping. "So" "what" "would" be a good idea instead of repping each other for the sake of it? How about linking a post "You" made to help the forum/forum members out. Isn't that how one should get rep? This also includes, great pics so I on. I really should not have to go into what should or shouldn't be counted as rep, hence the recalculation of rep in the first place.....

This way the admin can't say they are just circle repping each other for no point. If they feel this thread is "that" way they can bin it by all means. Some of you and myself would rather grow in rep with something behind it with an actual worthy thread of gaining rep to give to others than posting in circle rep threads. So why come into here and complain about it when I tried to come up with a solution to make everyone happy. Again if you don't want to contribute then by all means don't.

So you say this is a circle rep thread then? How? It will give you links to something, someone posted outside of OC to rep that you did for the good of the forums. Sure you can rep in OC but that's where the problem started in the first place this time around. So why not fix it for the good of the forums so at least we grow to help others grow on the forums.

This might seem like I'm singling you two out but this is for everyone reading this thread. They can recalculate the system or get rid of it. Until then, I will post LULZ, advice, help where I can and rep as many people as I can worthy of rep. If someone else has a better idea on how to increase everyone without everyone on this site having a pissy fit over "it" then by all means lay down your epic awesome idea in OC on how to help the system help us. I took time off because I for one knew of the shlt storm coming after the above events occurred on "that" day would bring. It's still going on some threads. So I tried to come up with a solution to the problem. I'm sure there are typos but I wanted to get this out there before I forget what the hell I was going to say before the morning.

It's actually quite simple. Help this thread to help others to help you or GTFO

    /long lecture/

Please do not quote this post....
No joking, it will take up space and if you do just quote the first sentence. I will be sure to neg you if you think being a smartass by quoting this whole post.

    Carry on....

When I first joined this forum I found a lot of very helpful threads. I decided back then I would do all I could to contribute to MTBR and hopefully help out someone else.

When the rep system was implemented, the very first thing I did was go back and give out +rep to those that helped me out. I never stopped giving it. Never will.

Here are a few threads I've contributed:

Remove a Stan's presta valve core with a cheap spoke wrench

    Acid Etching Custom Head Badges

CatEye Double Shot XM-L (U2-1C) Upgrade

    1994 GT Karakoram - SS Build-Up

XM-L U2 wide-angle light using a NiteRider miNewt housing (first build)

DX Charger Modification & Battery Pack Builds

    Painting Fork Lowers

One piece of advice for new riders…

    Lots of Older Service Manuals On-Line - shocks / hubs / brakes / more…

DIY Fork Bushing Removal & Installation

    My $55 home built workstand...

    GT Frame Build-Up - 2005 Aggressor

    My new "ride along" requirements...

Who wants to get rid of the OC???!

Clearly the majority of users here think that the rep system is useless or at least flawed. Better to get rid of it.

Why all of a sudden is being a member on MTBR all about building your reputation? This site would function just fine if the admin would get strict about abuse and dump the rep system all together.

The rep system is a failure. No matter how many times it is "adjusted", members will find a way to abuse it because they want it GONE!

Contributing on MTBR has absolutely nothing to do with building any sort of reputation.

As far as the OC is concerned, it's a different animal within MTBR. It's an escape from reality, just like mountain biking is for me. I don't want to take things too seriously here. I've got two full time jobs where I am on call 24/7 every day and plenty of other responsibilities. I need this escape. I need to be able to screw around. When I need help or find somewhere to give it, I do my part. Sometimes outside the OC, sometimes in it, too.

If the "rep system" must stay in place, the members should at least have the option to turn it off and not participate if they choose to do so...

I don't really start too many threads so most of my contributions are just little tips, suggestions, and advice scattered around. And a few random gear/equipment reviews. I try to stick to what I know, and it ain't much!

    Lights Shootout charts.

    Shoe info.

    Pedal info.

    Truck bed "rack" illustration.

    Sticky fork suggeston.

    Local trail info link.

    Passing along an equipment tip.

    Technique tip.

    Bike with a kid tip.

When I do start a new bike-related thread it's usually to ask a question. I have noticed that they all resulted in extremely helpful discussions that benifit everyone, so extra bonus points for everyone in those!
I'm enjoying my childhood way too much to ever give it up.

    My 1000th post!

I think this should be my one thousandth post. To celebrate (with myself) I'll join in:

    Example of useful posts:
    29er Tire weight database

    Topping up sealant with tubeless

    Example of picture posts:
Pic of high point in the Basque region

    Example of video posts:
    MTB in Spain video

I love checking out other posters' pics and vids, so I figure I'm contributing by posting my own. This is what I have received most Reps for, although the OC thread does seem to be more consistent at providing Rep, especially if you post pics of tits in green...

I may have helped a few people in the trail building & advocacy forum. That's where most of my rep came from.

Here's a few from the last year.

    Methods for Sizing Corners
    PinkBike WTF?
    Other resources?
Adding grip to pressure treated lumber
Best McLeod Tool? Best Value McLeod tool?
    Backyard Trails
    backyard obsticals
Log ramps: Good? Bad? And how best to build them?
    Bench Cutting Tool?

I still can't believe I wasn't repped through the roof for "Babies". That thread is a work of art. I did have a little help though.

Hutch can you please return it back to it's "original

I waste a lot of time in the 650b forum , and I often dabble in the drive train section. Some people liked my experiments with the keychain camera, too.

One more tiny side note - I am often a pretty good devil's advocate. I've had a few people having told me they decided to build certain bikes (mostly 650b conversions) after they had seen my builds here.

This isn't a circle jerk. What did you want me to rep you? All ready did and others in this thread. Apparently "the man" thinks it was worth a sticky. Thanks for the great feed back. Perhaps you can go whine to admin about the five rep total, the change in rep points some more. I'm sure they will be all ears. Actually: Edit: Come up with your own thread if you don't like mine.

If anyone else gets butt hurt because you're not getting those reps, tuff shlt, get over it. I figured because of all the whining, start a thread about your contributions to the forums outside of OC. That way people can rep you for your post contributing to the site instead of posting up in the "so" thread. Please continue though... In fact I'll go make some coffee and we can talk all night. You can even shed a tear on my shoulder.
