Game of Thrones: I don't get it?

I honestly think it has to be one of the most boring shows going. I'd actually rather watch Downton Abbey than these.

The first 3 episodes have literally 5 minutes of action and 175 minutes of people riding horse, walking in mud and talking around tables. In three hours Harry potter defeated Voldemort in the Chamber of Secrets. In 3 hrs Luke Skywalker found out that Obi Wan was a Jedi and Darth Vader was his father. In three Hours some hobbits walked a good distance towards Mount Doom and had a lot of kick ass battles and such.

My wife keeps telling me to hang in it gets better and more exciting and have to say "when was it exciting before this point?" because aside from the first few minutes of the first episode it has been a smattering of random tits, and people gabbing.

Help me out: What's the appeal? Should I hang in? Will there be action? Dragons? Anything more than people talk, back stabbing or just being annoying little pricks?

I have never seen it, but many of my coworkers talk about it. From them it sounds like the most epic show ever created!

This is what I thought too. Everyone raves about it but it held my interest about as long as that Housewives show with Teri Hatcher did. I am honestly forcing myself to watch it as my wife really wants me to watch it with her but it is like torture and the longer I go I just think about the hours that have wasted forcing myself to watch something I find boring.

is it maybe a chick show that is thinly veiled (boobs, lots of them) as a show that men should watch?

RC where have you been? I haven't seen you around these parts for decades.

I agree Rockcrusher. It is one of the slowest building shows EVER! My girlfriend is nuts over this show and likes it when I watch with her. I seriously think its an OK show when there is real action, but it takes a whole season for things to happen. Otherwise, it's just a soft porno, full of incest and tits. That's really all I see in it.

Depends on your definition of flawless, elegant, and soothing. There is some gore as the series progresses (standard HBO style).

    here's the draw.

pick a character that cannot be killed off because it would totally ruin the plot.

    then kill them off.

pick another...then kill off....continue until brain explodes.

BTW - the dwarf is rad.

I agree it builds really slowly and can be pretty boring at times. But 5-10 things happen each season that will effing blow your mind. I wouldn't recommend starting in the middle, go to the beginning and see if you like it. I don't have hbo now, but if you do, your on demand may have all seasons?

    That's a pretty solid list!
SOA got a little to ridiculous for me and I lost interest( first season was great)
    Loved Spartacus
    Loved Deadwood even more!
Lost jumped the shark for me.
    What are BB and TWD?
I'm watching a British series called Misfit's (kind of a Hero's/ Southpark mashup) lately
BSG was great right up to the finale which went off the rails in my opinion.
I enjoy Game of thrones but keeping up with the plot gets a little tough for me.

The books are awesome in scope. There is betrayal, intrigue, strategy and tactics, plots within plots, slowly evolving reveals of the characters true motivations, etc. There are a couple things that'll be happening soon in the next season that will blow the story wide open - no spoilers here though.

On the down side, the violence and cruelty in the books is off the charts. There was a time during the late 2nd to early 3rd book where I thought there was no way I could continue, but I did. I decided the author must be thinking about what he can do next that is even more cruel and depraved than the last time as he continues through the story. It just gets worse and worse in that regard until sometime in book 3 when it finally relents a little.

The books are around 1,000 pages each and they are slow reading for me as there is so much going on in so many different places. It is a little hard to keep up. I don't know when the next book is due out, but I think he still plans 3 more books to finish the story, and he delivers a new book every 3 years or so. Seems like the tv show will catch up to the books well before he is done writing them. Not sure what will happen then.

I'm enjoying the shows even though I know what is going to happen next. The character Tyrion Lannister (the dwarf) is classic. His father and siblings are also spectacular. Several other of the actors are delivering amazing performances. I think it is first rate tv, and even though they do show a lot of violence and cruelty in the shows, the details the author puts into the books related to the same scenes results in the written depictions of the horror and cruelty being far worse in my opinion that what they show on the tv.

I really enjoy GoT. It is hard to place the reasons why, though. Sure the nudity is nice, but there is more to it. I would say stick with it for a few more episodes.

I have not read the books and from discussing the show with people who have, there are some big differences. I find the show to be entertaining with all the subplots and subterfuge. The boobs can be nice, but it's obviously gratuitous most times. Tyrion Lannister is the shizzle. I do tend to like fantasy so I guess I'm biased into liking it and not overthinking it. The one thing that keeps me involved is that I can't always predict the outcome of the show. I've seen many movies and shows that are too easily predictable for me to stay interested unless I'm familiar with the story and already enjoy it. Like everything, you either like it or not. My advice is to use the show and your wife's interest to your advantage. Sometimes, it's more fun for me to watch my wife's reactions and interest level. For instance, 1st time she saw LOTR:FOTR she was telling the fellowship not to enter Moria (she's a little afraid of the dark) as I dimmed out the lights and got some nice together time at the end of the movie, if you know what I mean.
I don't know why,... it's just MUSS easier to pedal than the other ones.

I am not proud to say over this past weekend I watched all 3 seasons
the woman had it on and in between doing stuff I caught enough to be intrigued. As much as I enjoy the unknown talent that HBO gets naked, including a floppy dong every once and a while, it's the killing off of a main character every couple of episodes and the betrayal that kept me coming back. I'll try and watch when the new season starts

I've tried GoT. Can't get into it. I had to push through the first few episodes of Breaking Bad to love it. Could be the same here. I'm just not interested enough to try.

I enjoy Sons of Anarchy, but will agree that it's gotten to be a parody of itself.

I havent watched the tele series. I was all in on the books. At first. I lost interest 4 books in when I realized he was Robert Jordaning (milk the series for 10 billion books) while only putting out one book every 3 years. I dont mind a long series of 1000 page books, but dont make me wait out 20 freaking years for the series to wrap up!

Having lost interest in the books, I never bothered with the show.

I watched through a few seasons of Sons of Anarchy and I had the same realization. It just got too over top. I mean when i need to suspend disbelief that much they might as well introduce dragons and unicorns. It was so far removed from reality that I just stopped watching it. That's the problem with real life dramas. When they cross that line you have a hard time parsing the fact that once they were based in a reality you understand and now they just function in a completely fictional word where there aren't ATF officers, FBI, CIA, and government task forces that would have them shut down and under every form of surveillance possible.

I don't have HBO so I have to wait for the discs to show up from netflix.

Going to be interesting to see how they do the 4th and 5th seasons. The 4th and 5th book take place more or less at the same time just split between different people. It sucked having to go a whole book without one of your favorite characters, betting they stick the books back together for the Tv show.

BTW nothing really happens in the 5th book either to progress the story so Martin is Robert Jordaning it.
