Favorite Hostess Snack Thread...Don't be a Ding Dong.
We all know Hostess has become the latest fatality of our economy. There is another thread pertaining to that issue. So let's keep it light and fluffy. No talk about why they crashed
This is about your favorite Hostess snack growing up. Many of us grew up with Hostess as a staple in our junk food diet. Even though as adults we have given them up or cut down we still have fond memories of this iconic brand. List your favorite and then go in order to your least favorite. I was always a chocolate nut so my favorite's were chocolate.
1] Ho Ho's
2] Suzie Q's
3] Ding Dong's
4] Chocolate Cupcake
5] Chocolate Zingers / they sucked but I would choose them over the vanilla pastries.
6] No favorites in the vanilla category so I guess Twinkies
7] Orange covered vanilla cupcakes
8] And all others pertaining to vanilla
Chocolate was where it was at with me. Oh I forgot Chocodiles they rocked.

Ho Ho's. Perfect cake to chocolate/cream ratio for my taste.
I found Twinkies to be too sweet and greasy for my taste. I remember buying Twinkie Light (or something along that line) back in early '90s, though I haven't seen it in years. I liked those.
They were collateral damage from the bakers union and the current administrations view on junk food. I know they were in bankruptcy and had a revenue issue but I think they could have reorganized like many companies do in this business climate. Why didn't they get offered a bailout? As far as I am concerned Hostess is a national treasure just like General Motors.
My uncle worked at the Wonder Bread bakery in Sacramento for 30 years and during that time the bakery union were always stirring up trouble during labor negotiations. My uncle would be the first to cross the picket line to do the job he was hired to do. I personally think unions have out lived their usefulness.
Getting back to the OP - Ding Dongs, Ho Ho's, Chocodiles, Twinkies. In that order.
I was all over the fruit pies as a kid. cherry, in particular. also, the foil wrapped ding dongs. the plastic wrapped ones are not the same. it was many years between ding dongs, so imagine my horror at the flavor of the first plastic wrapped one. I will never forget.
I went to the store yesterday to buy some Hostess stuff. I wanted a little bit to eat now, but I was gonna be that bastard who puts up the unopened boxes on ebay in a year or two and makes a bunch of money. even if some other company buys the recipes and continues the popular treats, the "Hostess" packaging would be worth money. I bought the last boxes of regular twinkies (nobody was touching the chocolate filled ones), and there wasn't a ding dong in sight.

Ha,ha good idea buy them up an eBay a year down the road. If you can hold out from eating them in that time, doubtful.

Twinkies for me. My brother and I consumed more than I care to remember.
Heard that Pabst Brewing company was looking to possibly pick up the brand. Could be a great cross marketing platform, Remember the alcohol energy drink fad? How bout a Blue ribbon twinkie?

Yeah cherry pie is/was my favorite.
Funny thing happened at a local farmers market a couple weekends ago. One of the merchants were selling home made fruit pies for $12.00 a pie. I was offered a sample of the cherry pie and asked how I like it. I thought to myself that it sure tasted like a Hostess cherry pie but thought that would be rude to say out loud so I said yeah it tasted real good. I did end up buying an apple pie from them.

what a coincidence. there's a lady at my local farmer's market that sells homemade versions, too. she even has some savory ones that are good for a lunch. WAY cheaper than $12, though.
