Base Jumping - Who does this sport?

Some people think mountain biking is dangerous, but this sport seems to take the cake. I mean, jumping off of a mountain and flying through the air with certain death at the slightest mistake - who finds that enjoyable?

I skydived for over 15yrs but never tried base. I've been invited several times by passed for one reason or another at the time. I did go 2 times as ground crew with some buddies that were very addicted to it. Some of the guys involved were pretty talented at what they do. I figured I have enough addictive hobbies and they say you never quit base jumping once you start...

I once got thrown off a 400' cliff on a hang glider, does that count?

Base jumping is child's play compared to this.

Wow, that's freaky stuff man. I was nervous just watching that. And it was pretty amazing how much time he spent with his safety harness unattached-total free climbing much of the way up.

All that for minimum wage. Insane job!
That's where base jumping would come in handy to finish your work day.

Base Jumping - Who does this sport?

I'm about 99% sure that video is done on a tower just south of Sacramento here. I can see it from my front door. There is three of them, all grouped together. At one point in time, one of them was the tallest tower on Earth.
Every few years some poor news reporter has to climb up one of them for a local news story.

I would not climb it without my BASE rig and the tools would stay on top until next time.

Man, that video makes you nervous just watching it. It takes a special breed to do a job like that.

It's the thrill of living on a knife edge. The adrenaline rush after is insane due to the massive risk involved. It can be done relitively safely.
Sometimes the morning train to work and taking the brats they spawned to baseball practice just isn't enough for some people.

Start with a couple thousand sky dives. Canopy skills need to be perfected first.
