was out on a night ride for about an hour. in that amount of time, the wet stuff turned to frost. it's getting so cold. ugh.

Also, by the end of our ride, the singletrack drops you into some fields to exit thru. we heard a pack of coyotes fighting in the field. All i could think of, was my defenseless dog we had with us! so the only good thing about that ride, was that we had to turn around and got a few more fun miles in. its interesting when you ride your favorite trails backwards.

It looks like I won't be spending the night in the county jail after all. It was a pleasant and almost uneventful ride, my 1st night one, yee hah! Riding alone in a complete darkness is great, no peoplez! (thank God...)

I've ridden right through the night before, pedaled up the driveway at 4:15 am. I've been 10 miles straight out into the middle of nowhere late at night. I almost always ride alone at night, sometimes it's kind of spooky. But I figure, what the heck, if it's my destiny to be eaten up and it isn't the coyotes that do it, it'll probably be some homeless people. I'd rather that it was the coyotes.

Went to the LBS to buy a couple pump straps. One of the employees who knows me was at the computer in the back, and we got to talking about videos. He showed me an awesome singletrack descent he did, and I got all excited thinking that it was a local trail that I hadn't ridden yet. I asked him where it was and he said "Park City, Utah".

Damn! I have about as much of a chance of riding that trail as I do of climbing the Helipad trail that Optimus posted video of in this thread.

If I ever did make it to Park City, I would be climbing and descending that trail, with camera recording as always .

    P. S. I got a ride the 6hr race this weekend! Be prepared for lots of pictures of me in spandex looking like death. As well as some trail pictures, if I have time. There will definitely be beer and drunk flicks. The course is 6mi long and I hope to do 9-10 laps. I'll give a race report when it's all said and done. While 9-10 is my goal I really hope to do 11, prove to myself I am an endurance racer/rider. We shall see.

presta valves are silly and have no place on a proper mountain bike. i never realized how rinky dink they were until i bought a couple of tubes last week for some new (to me) rims. the valve is like something you would design for a tube that was meant to be used once and then thrown away. i thought i'd never find the right size drill bit to make the holes in the rims schrader-sized, but now I think i'll just file them out.

    Dremel tool

I have a friend with a Cannondale Quick 4 hybrid. He absolutely loathes the presta valves it came with. I considered drilling out the rims for him, but they are the low spoke count, narrower kind. He also weighs almost 400 lbs and is using the bike to lose weight, so I'm not sure drilling those rims out would be such a great idea. Don't want to weaken them.

I made sure my mtb had Schraeder valves so I could put Slime in the tubes to protect against goat head thorns.

yeah... totally an 'image' thing as far as I am concerned.

They mad the skinny valves to fit skinny wheels
Skinny wheels were 'elite'; then ya got people thinkin skinny valves are where it's at.

I wanna see fat bikes come out with fat valves
    Honestly... ahh I give up

Dremel is a great idea. I need to check to make sure I'm not going to remove anything that looks too structural.

Those wheels on the cannondale are nuts. I can see why you would hesitate to enlarge the valve holes.

I think that the thing I was MOST bummed about was that I can't get slime into the tubes. I neglected to buy the tubes with the removable valve cores.

Additionally, like Prestas because they leak less air than Schraders and because they are smaller profile...(less air drag )

    Redneck fix

I have a Trek 7000 WSD hybrid with a women's 16" frame. It lacks seat tube bottle cage braze-ons, and I grew tired of the constant broken welds on handlebar-mounted bottle cages. I ride this bike up to 40 miles at a time, so I like to have the ability to carry two large bottles on a hot day.

I bought a "Zefal Cage Bracket Gizmo" at the LBS, which turned out to be the biggest pile of garbage I've ever tried to install. I packaged it back up to return for a refund.

I looked around in my parts bins and found a couple hose clamps and an old rim strip. I cut a couple strips to size to protect the paint on the frame and clamped the cage to the frame. I also zip-tied another piece of rim strip over the section of hose clamp that passes under the rear brake cable to prevent the sharp edges of the hose clamp from wearing through the cable housing. I hate using tape because of the stickiness, especially duct tape, which looks like shyt! I want my redneck repairs to look somewhat presentable .

Nice job, freighttrain. How about those behind the saddle bottle holder gizmos I see the roadies use, that wouldn't have worked?

I'm not sure the behind-the-saddle cages would have worked since I have a rack and huge pannier back there. Also, I prefer traditional mounting locations for ease of access.

The "Gizmo" is supposed to allow you to mount a regular bottle cage on frames that lack braze-ons, like mine. Here's a link to the product page on Zefal's website, although the straps on the version I was sold aren't nearly as long, and they have the nub on both ends instead of just one like the pictured product.

I've seen the top cap mount before. Pretty neat, but unfortunately the Trek 7000 is a very low-end hybrid with a quill stem (I think that's what the old-school non-threadless stems were called?). I got it for $323 because it was a 2010 model and the LBS was clearing out all of the older models to make room for the 2011s.

BTW, they have some screaming deals on 2012s now. The same 2012 Wahoo that I paid full retail for ($579) at the same LBS is now on clearance for $449.

I did a quick edit of my daily ride for your pleasure. I wanted to play with some different camera mounting options, and I think this exercise sparked some new ideas. Sorry it's my ugly mug most of it - this was experimental for me.

I almost killed an off-leash dog in the making of this video. OBEY THE FCKIN' LEASH LAW!

I started making riding videos back in 1990 of Freestyle BMX on VHS tape-to-tape editing machines and an Amiga Computer for graphics (I was 15 - I've sent my poor mother on a treasure hunt for that old tape). In the early 2000's I was using a bullet cam connected to camcorder for motorcycle videos... you know, back in the video capture days?

Well, I finally got around to getting a GoPro, and trying to learn it. I love it!

I hope you like my new edit. As always, I cuss like a sailor and I lay over uncensored gangsta rap, so it may not be safe for work. I cuss, the music cusses, and there's text with cussing. And... it's gangsta rap, so there is violent language and drug references.

Playing with some different onboard mounting options. This edit is part of my daily loop through Santa Teresa County Park in San Jose, Ca., briefly showing Stile Ranch Trail and Mine Trail to Norred Ranch.

It's OK buddy. I've been riding one for 7 years.

Not this one. It's only 3 years old.

I'm 6'3" and a 29er just feels right, at least for the riding I do. It's okay, John.

Dion, I muted it and watched the video. Nice job editing. I liked the different angles. A little farther forward on the downtube and you'd still see enough fork, but a little more trail, but I'm just being picky. I liked seeing the brake levers.

    Thanks Bill.

I'm trying to gauge where the sweet spot is with the GoProHD and the wide lens. It's going to take more experimenting. With that camera, you'd think that it wouldn't pick up so much being so close to things, but that ain't the case.

Yello bike time - a special for Hawg!

I drove 120miles west of Boston to ride something a little bit different today. It was fun although the next time, I have to either bring a granny ring or stronger legs.

    We are in Berkshires!

ya, that wide angle lens really picks up a lot.

we put my son's camera on his head tube, and i was amazed how smooth the video is, just like yours from the down tube.

looking forward to the next one.

Shitty weather is forecast for tomorrow, so little chance of a ride

The LBS where I bought my Bike Friday folding bike put this up a couple days ago.

Went out shopping for bike gloves for my lady's 50th birthday today.
Bought her one of these. They threw the gloves in for free. Does that make me a cheapskate?

I rode tonight, high 60's, wore a long sleeve jersey, I was still cold. Shitty weather is all a matter of perspective, but with 61 degrees and showers for you tomorrow it would be hard for me to disagree with you. Make it a bike maintenance day. Or better yet, make a big pot of chicken noodle soup.

Well, now the forecast says "Showers early becoming less numerous later in the day. High 61F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.", so there's a small chance I'll be able to sneak in a ride. The temperature is actually perfect, it's just the rain that is a problem. Trail conditions will suck and I don't want to cause damage by riding muddy trails, so it would definitely have to be a road ride.

Yes, and anyone who is actually stupid enough to give a spammer business too! I don't remember the spam problem being this bad when I first joined MTBR, or RBR for that matter. Reporting the lastest round of spam right now.

LOL! I know! I'm pretty sure the "sound effects" are the #1 reason that 95% of all cycling videos I click on have some kind of soundtrack. It's too bad, because I'd much rather hear the reality of a good hard climb even if it sounds like a Redtube video instead of YouTube (something one of my male friends likes to compare my videos to in a joking manner ).

I believe the increase in spam is a direct result of the spammers being locked out of GR. The spammers are following the golfers.

I just got back into town from a long weekend away in the high desert. Did a little fire road exploring ride. Really neat to see the geography transition from high desert into forest.

Let's make a spammer 'marked ID'

Sometimes it's tough to tell if it has been reported, and there's no need to make multiple reports.

So, make sure to neg-rep and 'mark' the spammer, so we know it's reported

If I post about them you can assume they have been reported, I'd rather not waste a rep on them though. So how about a post without quoting them? Just post "reported" Like Hawg's post above?

There are enough good contributions made on this board that negging a spammer who will be gone makes it a wasted rep. Go give a pos to someone that deserves it, shouldn't be hard to find one if you put any real effort into it.
