I'm headed out for my first freezing azz, Winter night ride of the cool season. I hope the Mtn Lions aren't hungry tonight. But if the Cougars are hungry, I'm OK with it.

If you don't hear back from me within 3 hours, something bad happened...

I'm back. No "wild life" sightings.

My injured/recovering knee did not like the cool weather one bit. It felt great as long as we were moving but the moment we stopped to turn around, I felt a minor sharp ache. I was wearing top and bottom full length compression underwear below my riding attire but I think I need a little extra around the knee. I'd estimate an outdoor temp tonight in the high 40's pushing 50. I know it's gonna get colder than that.

I tried to take a picture of the city all lit up in the dark from up on an overlook but my cheap cell phone camera couldn't focus in on it which is odd because it's crystal clear here tonight. It did take a really strange image that looks like a spider web to me, though.

Hmmm, Verdugo's, top of La Tuna Cyn? You start on the east end, near Whiting woods or at the 210 parking lot? Wipe the spooge off the lense first before snapshots.

Everybody....go outside for a while. I just spent 20 minutes on the rear deck, and saw at least a dozen meteors.

There's some kind of meteor shower all night tonight.

Just a quick climb up Lower Brown Mtn fire road (actually a single track) tonight.

My workout loop starts on pavement close to Montrose Bike Shop, over to La Tuna, up La Tuna to Verdugo Motorway, left on the motorway to Whiting Woods and down. I pop out back into civilization less than a half mile from home.

Took my yellow singlespeed up some longer, steeper hills yesterday. Even though I still had the platform pedals on, I made it up every one of the hills. I had to traverse up part of a couple of them, but only for a few seconds.

I rode with my fixed gear riding friend. He has a Specialized Langster with a 48x17 gear. I lent him my GoPro HD Hero 960 on a handlebar mount so he could record his climbs. I used my ContourHD on my helmet. My cheapy Casio digital camera came in handy to record him climbing up the last steep hill of the day when the battery in my Contour died as he started up the climb.

I am loving this bike more and more! After our ride we went to Edible Pedal, where my friend had some Shimano SPDs on consignment. I bought them for $25, put them on my Sirrus, took the pedals with toe clips off the Sirrus, and put them on the singlespeed. I prefer toe clips and straps on bikes that are ridden in town. Clipless is for my road bikes that are used on longer climbing rides out in the country.

Hehe, you caught that one ! I debated whether to leave it in or not, but I didn't want to alter any of the footage of that climb. Besides, I remembered that I had mentioned my loud belches while riding in this thread. I figured this was a good time to let one be heard .

Freighty, if you don't mind me asking, now old are you? I'm guessing you are older than 20, so I'm shocked to see your HR floating around 200. Your HR profile reminds me of this clip

It's the Northern Lights. The sensor in your cameraphone's CCD picks up those wavelengths with greater sensitivity than the human eye, so they are visible farther south through the camera.

Spammers are like punching bags - or maybe voodoo dolls for your pent up neg-reps.

As I mentioned in another thread here today, I do not believe that leaving neg rep on a spammer is a "waste". It's a sign post of warning to other members. Works like a charm, IMO.

That was a muted burp too . When I'm out in the sticks where I know there's nobody around to get PO'ed at me, I let it fly so loud that it echoes off canyon walls .

I'll be riding with him again on tomorrow's roadie sufferfest. I just bought some full-fingered gloves and neoprene toe warmers to put over my cycling shoes. It's going to be in the thirties when the ride starts, with a forecast high of only 45. To top it off, there's a 30% chance of showers later in the day, hopefully when the ride is finished.

I see a nice hot bowl of tomato basil soup in my future! The cheddar broccoli soup I had tonight sure hit the spot.

I am 45 years old. When I was 25 my max HR was 215. I hit 204 on that Quarry Trail mtb ride I did a month and a half ago.

Like a fool, I did an FTP (f***ing torture protocol..in my book) in a gym. Here is the 20 min profile.

That drop in power at the end is because I had to fight a what I feared would be a losing battle with my stomach contents. I won out...thankfully for those around me.

Damn Girl, you are an animal... I'm 54, and my max heart rate is about 195, and I'm 6'5" and around 225-235 in my winter coat. Cytomax makes me belch like that... sometimes I don't belch in time and the person behind me suffers.

I tried my keychain camera with an external battery pack for the first time today. Got 1hr of non-stop boring footage, now I hate even the thought of processing and uploading it somewhere. I am glad I realized this before paying $$$ for a real camera.

Super fine editing work there Net!!!

I got out on a great ride today, too. Did Los Robles Open Space with OO7. I haven't been there in a few years. It's a tough ride with lots of short but very steep climbing. I have two clips to share. This first one is of a short section of ST called Los Padres Trail that I was introduced to today by OO7. Tomorrow, I will post part of a longer, steeper downhill run on a different trail called Rosewood. It was a bit cool this morning at 45 degrees but we warmed up from the climbs pretty quick.

BTW, I turned up the volume for Freighty.

OO7 was wearing his pink socks again today....

Stihacka, i had a dream with you in it. we rode in a group, and made you (or you chose to, i forget) ride a tiny girl's road bike through the woods. you kept kicking the tire and crashing. So you becames annoyed and pulled apart the rear, and rigged some sort of shock. So now you had a tiny road bike, with a rear shock, as if that would fix everything. thats all. hope you're there tomorrow!

Joe, Sti, and some others who are riding with me, i'm a little worried. i drank some water with a bunch of magnesium powder becuase you know...i have issues. Apparently the laxative effect doesnt kick in right away....it can happen a day later (says my mom who takes it). So i may suddenly sh|t my britches in the middle of the ride. Its ok though, i'll hang in the back. Thanks for listening. Please just pretend it didnt happen, we dont need to make it more awkward than it will already be.

Try to time it so that it happens during a hill climb, nobody will think anything of it. We all shyt ourselves from time to time on the hills.

^ Understood...so you'll remain unclaimed. That makes you fair game for our continued badgering...

    And now:

The other video clip from my ride today is already finished. This is the lower half of the trail which is rockier and mildly technical above. This is the fast, smooth part. The trails were moist today, it did rain a bit last night. This soil here is decomposed sandstone which drains rapidly. No mud problems, very little puddling, hardly any slip-n-slide. Good to go!

At the end of the video, I yelled out "demo days" to the rider we approached. Apparently, a LBS was offering a Pivot Demo Weekend and we kept seeing peeps riding Pivot demo bikes all over the place.

That's much better! It's nice to be able to hear all the normal sounds associated with a bike ride. Now let's see some climbing!

Your trails look about as wet as ours now. If I remember correctly, you guys had some rain down there a few days ago.

Well, I'm satisfied with my strength. Got PRs on the two steepest climbs of the day: Chili Hill and Bald Hill Roads. No, I wasn't able to keep up with the Hammerin' Wheels hammerheads, so I ended up doing my own route. I did run into them twice though. The first time was when they had just climbed Chili Hill and I was about to descend and climb back up. The second time was when I was almost to the top of Bald Hill Road and they were just starting their descent after climbing the other side.

Bike Ride Profile | -Auburn hills near Loomis | Times and Records | Strava
Loomis-Auburn hills by freighttraininguphill at Garmin Connect - Details

You can see my fixed gear riding friend in the blue and white jersey at the top of Bald Hill Road near the end of the video. He rode his geared bike for this very hilly ride, and so did I. He has his GoPro on his helmet.

Speaking of helmet-mounted cameras, the camera angle on my footage of today's ride sucked wrinkled scrotum. The Contour vented helmet mount gets bumped out of position too easily, so the damn thing ended up pointing down too much .

I didn't have my GoPro with me, so this is the only footage I have.

On the way back, I stumbled across a place called Trailhead Coffee and Cycling Lounge. It is also a bike shop, and there's lots of cool cycling memorabilia.

My hoopty is the blue and white bike leaning against the rock. I call it a hoopty because it's fcuking slow compared to my Sirrus or my singlespeed. Climbing out of the saddle sucks even more wrinkled ballsacks! On my singlespeed, I can climb out of the saddle for quite a while, and it doesn't feel awkward.

I went in and had a grilled cheese sandwich after taking the exterior pictures. After I was done eating I took the inside ones.

My friend's Colnago is so beautiful, I couldn't stop staring at it.

Freighty, that place is kinda cool and comical at the same time. Looks fun.

I am currently uploading a very short climbing clip in your honor...but I wasn't breathing hard. Just to give you all an idea of what the climbs were like today. That place is a really tough ride. It works you really hard.

    It'll be up shortly...

I dig those pink socks. I would rock those!

They're forecasting nothing but garbage for 9 of the next 10 days I would really like to live in Optimus's climate right about now! Fcuk this cold, miserable shyt! Even with my neoprene toe warmers on, my toes were frozen after a couple hours of riding. Luckily I beat the rain!

After the ride I sat in my truck with the heater on full blast to warm my feet. It took a while!

I sat out yesterday because of all day rain and cold. Going to hike Pass Mtn where I beat up my knee a couple of weekends ago, then energy permitting I plan to do a quick little 5ish mile brutal up and down a little mountain trail. Treated my Paradox to a new SRAM PG990 cassette yesterday, nice all aluminum spider, the crappy Shimano HG61 that I had on there was chewing the sh!t out of my free hub body. I was too lazy though to clean my chain, it's just going to get dirty again anyway.

I like your little bike shop hangout there freighttrain, I always enjoy the down home feel as opposed the commercial feel.

I really like them, the 240s is especially nice. You'd think though, for the price, they'd use a little tougher material for the free hub body. I love the star ratchet drive, it doesn't much simpler or easier to maintain than that.

Freighttrain, 33 miles through the hills, nice average speed for the amount of hill climbing that you did, good job. Looking at Chili Hill, I see plenty of 10%+ grade, a little bit of 17% in there, Bald Hill you had a bit of 20-23% thrown into the middle of more 10%+, yowzers. After my little climb last weekend, I can much more appreciate those kind of sustained grades, and in my opinion, you had a great ride.

I agree with your comment about out of the saddle SS climbing. Even though you can hold 1 gear while climbing geared, SS out of the saddle does seem to be more comfortable and more easily maintained. Another thought, we like wider bars for mtb hill climbing, with many including yourself using bar ends, get those hands out there for leverage and to open up the chest cavity. Yet for road riding, for aerodynamics purposes, you keep everything in close. Grade for grade, do you find road hill climbing harder than mtb hill climbing?

What kind of rear hub you running that it's so damn loud? A Chris King or a Hope? Or a lack or recent service? That thing sounds dry as a bone.

That was just a sampling of the climbs yesterday. There was at least 30 of those short, steep sections. Really hard to get into a rythum with that stuff.

I will do my local Hell Climb again soon, this time with the volume on. And yes, I am still pledging my 429 to you if my heart explodes.

It's an aluminum carrier for the weight savings, it's a racing hub. Slap a good cassette on there with a spider carrier like a SRAM 990 and you don't have to worry. The other option is to order a SS carrier from a Hugi FR hub from DT Swiss. Might weigh a bit more, but cheap cassettes won't cut into it.

Don't ask me how I know, as a Clyde riding around the same places 007 and 'hawg does. I am surprised they haven't bumped into FoShizzle yet out there on his Ti Lynskey or his Jones.

RandyBoy, it's a Stan's hub. It was that loud when I got the wheel set. I did grease it up once to quiet it down but it quickly got loud again.

I now consider it a warning of oncoming traffic for other trail users. Plus, it reminds me of a rattlesnake and you all know how I love rattlesnakes.

I think that bridge goes somewhat down hill, and if you hit it fast and it's a bit wet and greasy on the far side turn, you go through a good hard right hand G out that will surely have you doing 2 wheel drifts there hanging it out "on the edge".

I am in slow, sad climbing shape right now, but I'd like to do a video for Freighty of a short climb section I like to do weekly. When I am riding 4x a week, a good time for me is 40 minutes for 3 miles and 1400 vertical feet or so of climbing. Right now, after a gall bladder surgery, no riding from doctors orders, and a bunch of other camping crap in my life, I am at a snail slow pace of 46 to 47 minutes, and the crux I have to either walk now or stop and rest for it. This is on a 33 pound Niner WFO built for pleasure, not speed.

Freighty, I like your rest spot. I've always wanted, in my fantasies, to get some trail head. That's two words, right, not one?

Oh, I realize that, but even so you'd think that for being one of the most expensive rear hubs out there, and also one of the highest quality, they'd have designed the hub to be a bit tougher.

Strange, are they 135 /110 with disc brake with QR skewers built with 29'ers?

Nuthing new, coming from you Nicole... It's all good entertainment, surely healthier than all the crap on the news lately about political wishes and bans.

So I have to ask... If I dream about riding with some of y'all here and it's raining on the ride... in my dream... is that considered a wet dream? Technically speaking... of course.

Of course, and the level of muddiness...in your dream...will directly correlate with the dirtiness of the ride. For further clarification, consult with Dr. Tones in the test forum.
