I haven't really heard what caused this yet. Did the fire turn back on them? Were they in a canyon with no outlet?

    That's my understanding of things.

A bit in the AZ section, but it seems they lost radio contact, a helicopter was sent up to locate them, and when they were discovered, they were completely surrounded, and the fire was to close to attempt a rescue.

Most were found under a "fire shelter" ... 19 shelters had been erected, and I guess the idea is that it is a last resort effort, and that if lucky, the fire will pass over you.

I'm in CO, so I've seen some fires lately. I was evacced last year during one of them. Is this area densely wooded? What kind of fire mitigation had been done? We're not getting any coverage of the fire outside of the casualty info up here.

It is high desert into pinion, oak and grasslands running into dense forest woodlands. The lower elevations immediately south/southwest of Prescott. This area has not seen much fire in over forty years.

That is a horrific loss. I said before that this was gonna be one heckuva fire season, but I may have understated it.
