    Visiting Raleigh area June 7-10

Howdy, I'm headed to the Raleigh area and will be there over the weekend, looking to do some riding and seeking advice. For info I'm a somewhat out of race shape cat. 1 XC racer riding an FS 29er with decent tech skills. Just looking for fun rides of a few hours each.

I've found the TriangleMTB site and have picked out New Light and Beaverdam to do so far as they're fairly close to where I'll be staying in Butner. It looks like they're close to each other, could you ride one and then ride to the other? I also see a bridge over the lake between them, is that accessible and could you use it to transfer between the trails?

What else would be recommended within an hour or so of the Raleigh area? I will probably have 3 days to ride while there.

Also, how rocky are the trails there, should I bring my Schwalbe snakeskins or would my Evo tires be ok?

Yeah, you can ride from one to the other via pavement. There are some good trails in VA. not far from Butner called Anglers Ridge. I have yet to ride them personally, but friends have really loved them.

Thanks for the Angler's Ridge tip. Looks like fun, I may try to make a drive up there.

Any feedback on tires for the area? I have Schwalbe Rocket Ron on the front and Racing Ralph on the rear, I usually run EVOs but have a pair of Snakeskins I can put on if needed for rocks.

San Lee looks like fun, will definitely try to get there. Also Lake Crabtree looks like a fun ride. Might try to do Beaverdam/New Light, Lake Crabtree and San Lee for my 3 days of riding.

I run the same tires, EVO, and have no problems around here.

Good to hear, thanks. And also surprising, looking at pics it looks like there's a fair bit of rocks around there. I'll pack an extra or two just in case anyway.

If you're in Butner you are very close to one of nicest trails around, an off the radar, hidden gem called Tar River. Ten miles of challenging singletrack a few assorted wallrides, jumps and stunts. It just happens to be in my back yard...drop me a pm here or shoot me an email if you're interested in a tour. I'm off work the 7th and usually try to ride early Sunday morning.

New Light has some pretty rocky sections which could take out a sidewall if you aren't careful. Beaver Dam nothing to worry about.

I would swap Harris Lake for Crabtree, other than that, make sure you do San Lee.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It's unfortunate that I drove all the way up here with this tropical storm going on though. Hope everyone fares well, doesn't seem like it'll be too much other than a rainmaker here though. I hope I can still get in some riding, and would really appreciate any advice on what might be open in the area once the rain moves out.

All the "sanctioned" trails will be shut down until further notice. Your only hope is the bandits, most of which are probably under water. I'll be riding...my place drains fast and I just don't give a sh*t if it's wet.

Thanks to bushwhacker for showing me a few miles of Tar River this morning. Really fun trails. I went to New Light afterwards and really enjoyed that also. It was a little wet but nothing bad. I really enjoyed it. If I can't get down to San Lee tomorrow morning I will probably head back out to New Light.
