    Trail Conditions at Kitsuma/ORAMM?

Just wondering how much rain that exact area has gotten recently? Looks like it's been raining in WNC quite a bit.

Are the trails a sloppy mess? Are they ok?

Trying to figure out if I should just go ahead and settle for riding the single speed cause it's nasty or whether to bring the geared bike.

Hope somebody local to that area will comment, but I don't believe there has been any all-day rain up there for the last several days. At this point, most of what falls would likely run off, and the forecast for Old Fort, NC is largely clear of rain for the week.

My GUESS would be is that the trails will be okay for the race.

I just received an email from BRA regarding the oramm.

"We've had a ton of rain here in the past few weeks but the trails are looking better than we would have expected and we're doing our part to get them in tip top shape before the race!"

This will be my first time doing oramm or riding any of these trails. I'm hoping its not going to be a sloppy washout.

Sweet, just saw that email too. Glad to see they are in good shape. Going to go ahead and leave on the knobbier tires, but I guess I'll ride the geared bike.

X2 - Looking for a way to do a recon type ride on Firday AM, around 2.5 hours what would you all suggest?

For tires I am running 29r Rocket Ron Snakeskins around 22psi tubeless that does well for me in other rocky areas, not that I would change right now anyway but hopefully they will handle the conditions, not bad in the wet, but what is.

Head out from Old Fort, up that gravel first climb, then up and down over Kitsuma and back to town.

Rocket Ron is like the opposite of a mud tire I'm running Ardents myself.

Ardent up front for that spring section on heartbreak or if it rains ,slant 6 on the rear.

I hope they fixed the Rhodo over growth on Heartbreak. It was insane 2 weeks ago.

You will be on gravel and pavement most of the time anyway

    Trail conditions should be fine.

First time in area but I thought conditions were great I prerode Kitsumma and it was not dry where it is loose but just wet enough to be tacky. They had some good rain yesterday evening but guessing it drains well. I am not going to worry about conditions but hope rain holds off race day and hope it is not a rider induced bottle neck up the switchbacks.

    Re: Trail Conditions at Kitsuma/ORAMM?

Kitsuma was a little slippery the first time and a mucking fess the second.

Heartbreak was similar but not quite as bad.

Kitsuma messed me up big time today. The first time down I hit one of the jumps and landed off the trail, which sent me flying down the trail. I hit with so much force that it nearly rotated my stem 180 degrees and somehow ripped off my full finger glove. The second time down I fell in the slope, it was really sketchy.

I was lucky and missed the rain on Heartbreak. Had a non-eventful decent and enjoyed having the laurel cut back.

Hey, glad to hear you finished! I rode my drop-bar rigid bike for S&Gs, and the only time I wished I had my race bike was that second time down Kitsuma: I think I would've beaten the rain.

I crashed 4 or 5 times that 2nd time down. It was like trying to ride a mountain bike on a bobsled run. At one point I was just laying on the ground thinking I am 52 years old and spending my Sunday laying in a giant pile of mud. And then thinking that was a good thing as it beats the heck out of playing freaking golf or sitting on my butt watching TV (I did that later on).

Dude, that's awesome. I was thinking, looking in the rearview mirror at the mountains, about all the racers on course as we were heading back to Raleigh. Man, it looked bad.
