    Ride Pics

I made a post in the SE forum that I will copy and paste below. I really don't know why NC/SC are not included in that forum, because I think we are all connected by, at least, the joy of MTB and the great trails in the Appalachians and the foothills, and even good or great systems in the Piedmont and coastal plain. Anyway, here was my post, and I would enjoy your participation in this thread here if it is cool to you.

One of my favorite threads on the whole forum is this one in the Passion forum...

One picture, one line. No whining. Something about YOUR last ride. [o]

I love to look at pics of folks rides, and the interesting things seen on the ride, and the spectacular scenery from some of the different places. Sometimes the pic is excellent, sometimes average, and sometimes low quality, but it never really matters to me. I just like to daydream.

I think it would be even more interesting to see pics of the rides WE do regularly, on trails that are a little more accessible to each of us. I ride a handful of trail systems close to me, but I think it might inspire me to travel a little more when possible and hit some of YOUR trails.

The basic, loose rules of the thread are 1) a pic, 2) a very brief description of the location and pic description and 3) little excess chatter between posts. Rule 3 is pretty important I think because a lot of the comments and questions can be handled via PM or other means.

Anyway, please participate! I'd love to see your last ride!

Last weeks trip to Bayleys Pond Area, George Washington National Forest, Virginia. Hands down, some of the sweetest ST I've ever ridden.

G - When did (do) you go to Edisto? I went for my annual trip two weeks ago. Is that not a fun trail? I never expected to be railing the marsh and flushing pterodactyls.

    Edit: Cool - thanks!

Fisherman with a deathwish at High Falls. Even once cautioned about his proximity to the edge (after returning to shore)
he said "It's okay I'm familiar with this waterfall, a friend of mines wife died here two years ago."

A couple of Pictures from a trip to Dupont State Forest

Reasonover Creek, this is the beginning of a very scenic section that runs along the creek for a bit.

Reasonover Creek with Glen, Layne, and Ed

Layne is 71 years old, and rides like he is much, much younger.

Ed has fallen and broken his neck before while riding alone. He said he had to lay there on the ground for about 30 minutes before he was able to move enough to get his cell phone and call 911. It took a couple more hours before he was reached and rescued. I admire his determination not to give in.

I (Glen) have just started mountain biking in Nov 2011, and feel like I am getting a bit stronger every trip. (And a little lighter too, but still have a ways to go on that one)

And Finally, Richie is the 50 year old that thinks every trail should be uphill LOL. Since he wasn't in the picture above, He gets his own. We kept telling him to take one more step backwards.

    Rocky Knob not rocky enough?

Try Warriors Path in Kingsport Tn. The Boneyard is trials heaven. Not saying I loved it but it's damn sure challenging.

    Coming down Daniel Ridge CCW.

Cove Creek just above that bridge you have to carry yuour bike across.

Before there was a bridge at Daniel Ridge.

    The bridge..

Black Mtn trail where it first tops out.

All below from a late Fall solo ride Black-Turkey Pen-Mulinax-Squirrel-South Mills.

    Black mtn/Clawhammer.

Squirrel Gap. Lots of deep leaves.

South Mills from the the end of Squirrel.

hey Fat Goose - Brother you get to ride lots of great places. Thanks for the pics! Since you seem to know the trails, I need some advice. I've got some friends coming down from NY in April for some riding in WNC for 3 days. We are hitting Dupont one day. The other days we are thinking either 2 days in Pisgah or one in Tsali and then one in Pisgah. Could you recommend a 30-40 miler in Pisgah with some great trails and views? I appreciate your help

What kind of riding are you looking for in Pisgah?
For a trail system, you can spend the day out at Bent Creek and easily find 30-40 miles.
There is a good variety of trails there and it is fairly easy to navigate and well maintained.

Or are you looking for more challenging stuff?

For Dupont, I have posted a good 30 mile loop before that includes pretty much all the good trails that people seem to like best and uses very little service road. It could easily be turned in to a 40 mile loop if need be.

I'd skip Tsali unless you are looking for an easier style ride to break Pisgah up. Nothing against Tsali but I'd probably do Bent Creek over Tsali. Not sure what your friends' skill and strength level is but 3 consecutive days is probably going to hurt. I'd tackle the good Pisgah trails first then hit Du Pont. You can make Du Pont easy, long, short, or hard. Maybe even do Du Pont in the middle to "rest". The Cedar rock area at Du Pont is my personal favorite. I love the granite but there are other good trails too. Like I said all depends on what you want to do, or better yet what you will be capable of doing.

Do this search on google and you will find lots of info
    site:mtbr.com pisgah

Also though I have not ridden there yet I might consider Rocky Knob in Boone. Place looks FUN.

    Thanks for the correction.
    Single tracks lists 30 miles
Bent Creek Mountain Bike Trail in Asheville, North Carolina || SINGLETRACKS.COM

According to the Western NC Trail guide, there is 27.59 miles of trails in Bent Creek.
2.22 miles of those trails don't allow biking but as we also all know there are trails there that are no longer on the map. Not to mention the fact that does not include the service roads that connect some of the trails and that you can do them all in both directions and many of them should be.

So, maybe I should reword what I said to be more precise.

    You could ride Bent Creek.
There are 25.37 miles of biking trails listed on the map but there are a few trails there that are not on the map also. If you ride them all, including the ones not listed and the service roads you will need to ride to connect a few of them, you should get close to or possible a little over 30 miles. If you want to do 40, you may have to ride a couple backwards.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Its a pretty strong group of riders. I was thinking three days of Pisgah could be rough, thats why I was thinking one day at Tsali. We haven't agreed yet on what we want to do. I've ridden Tsali, Bent Creek, and Dupont but the more remote places in Pisgah I haven't ridden

Theres just so many options in Pisgah to choose from. I was hoping to find something challenging with some views along the way. Want to give them their monies worth since they are driving all that way.

Hey Joker, looks like others beat me to it. Just as well, I don't calculate milage when I ride or pay attention to the turns I make, I just go...and take lots of pics while I'm out there.

Well in that case check out trail like
Black Mountain, Pilot Rock, Laurel Mtn and Squirrels Gap
Don't expect 30-40 mile loops but I don't think you will care at the end of the day.

A little something for The Goose

Took the Frankensteined KHS on vacation. Winds were very high - I was almost crab bait crossing the bridge! (Goose 5/12. Me - 5/13) Fun ride in the marshes of Edisto.
