Pisgah 111 single speed question
I'm doing the 111 next month and am wondering if the same gear I race oramm on is the same gear to race the 111 on. Has anyone done both? Is the amount of climbing similar?
Thanks!

I have not done the 111K, but I have done PMBAR, Double Dare, and ORAMM on a SS. I used the same gearing for all.

I ride a 29er SS. What gear ratio did you use? I'm thinking of doing the 55.5km. Thanks

Good info thanks!

I rode a 29er SS for a year or so and changed gearing several times.

I wanted something I could grind all day so I went 34X17
Just kidding. 32X22 on a 29er

So you use the same gear for oramm as for the 111?

I gear one tooth taller for ORAMM. Most of the climbing is on the road.
Pisgah Eleventy-One is a different animal altogether.

I usually run a 32x19 or 20 at ORAMM and swank. Other than these two races, I have minimal knowledge of Pisgah. How are the 111 and ORAMM different? Is the 111 all single track? Thanks!

There's more climbing on single track and the race is almost two hours longer. I'm normally a 32X19 at ORAMM and 32X20 at P111, although this year I'll be 38X23 (which is closer to 32X19.5).

This maybe a SS Newbie question, but why run a 38x23 vs a 32x20?

Theoretically? More wrap, less resistance due to reduced bending on links, and slower wear.
Actually? To use more links of the $45 chain I bought and confuse the competition.

Hahaha! Splurged on the kmc Rasta chain for the 111k? Good call
I run 32x20 on 29'ers in Pisgah all year long, but Im putting a 22 on for the 111k. I ran the same gearing last year and was happy with the choice. There was never a point that day that I wanted to be pushing a harder gear, or was upset to coast. Spin to win..or finish

For a comparison, what gearing did you use as a solo single speeder for Warrior Creek and River's Edge? Thanks

I soloed Warrior Creek with a 32X20 (my everyday Pisgah gear, 2 teeth less than my 111k plan)..Carey Lowery won the woman's solo on her singlespeed with a 32x21...but there was definitely a rumor going around that she ran a 17 in the back. I totally bought it because she's so hardcore..but I should have known better, because she's also a really smart lady.
