Sorry, I am an OKI regular and you might as well bring your cooler full of beer and a kite. You can ride on the beach and get your bike all covered in seagull poop. The only elevation change out there is the bridge that connects you to Southport. You can also ride up and down the island's main road dodging tourists and golf carts.

I brought my road bike with me last time (July) and it stayed in the room. I did stare at it while I watched the Tour de France.

Is your wife making you go there too???

no ,I'm going there of my own free will (and my wife told I'm going)
I returned to mntbiking after a 13 or so year absence so
enthusiasm is not a problem..I will ride.
I will at least dodge some golf carts
I'm bringing my old steel hard tail so the beach riding is not high on my list
how about within an hour or so??
    even an interesting roadish ride??
    bru pub ride??

Oak Is. is about 27 miles south of Wilmington there are some decent trails. there used to a cool ride over Carolina Beach area Dow Rd. but i think it's off limits now.

go here for area trail info (at the top of the webpage) also the Cape Fear Cyclist for mtb and roadie info.

I just returned home (GSO) from OKI yesterday and I was dissapointed with the amount of traffic there. I couldn't even ride on the street. I can't complain about the food though, Provision company in Southpoint is really quite a fun place to eat.
