    New riding opportunities

2012-2013 saw a lot of new trail development, new venues to ride bikes in the dirt are pooping up all over NC/SC. Lets post up a list of all the great new trails, and then transfer into what is happening new in 2014 and beyond (again, lots of new trail being built now).

Tell us the name of the new trail or new system, where it is, when and how it got built (volunteer build, contractor build, where the $ came from if professionally built), and some details. Post a few photos to entice us to travel to wherever to ride this new trail.

Who want to kick this off?

    I'll bite.

--5 miles of trail has just been completed at Lake Lure by Trail Dynamics, with more to come.
--I built a pumptrack at Warrior Creek back in December, which will be officially opened in the spring when this dang freeze/thaw stops.
--Pickens Bike Park is about to get tee'd off by the ETD boys.
--Pleasant Ridge in SC is well underway with machine work done by the Shrimper.
--I will begin the reconstruction of the Emerald Outback trail system on top of Beech Mountain as soon as the snow melts, in addition to doing more summer work in the resort's Bike Park.
--The infamous "pisgah project" may finally begin happening soon.
--ETD just completed about a mile of bike-specific trail in Chapel Hill.

The trail at WCU, which opened in March, 2013 has been a great addition for those of us that live west of Asheville. During this past summer it provided a nice ride option for those days when Bent Creek was too wet.

The new stuff at WCU is awesome, Ed knows how to build trail! It does need a name though ...I call it 'the Body Farm' due to its proximity to the forensic test area.

Another new local favorite trail is Bracken Mtn, built by Long Cane for the city of Brevard. The locals all know it and its potential for big loop rides from the hatchery but visitors should definitely try it out.

WCU, Bracken and Rocky Knob are all sweet ...can't wait to try out Lake Lure.

Professionally built, funded by the City of Brevard and Clean Water Management Trust Fund money (Brevard sold the development rights on the property and put the land into a permanent conservation easement, which CWMTF pays for).

Somewhat of a hybrid project in that the city staff and volunteers did corridor clearing work in front of the machines.

Would be really cool to see Bracken to connect to Joel Branch Rd.

We called it the same thing during the design process. No one told us about the body farm, we just stumbled upon it during the design phase (kind of spooky).

Planning and design by TD back a few years ago, and built by TD in 2012. Hybrid project with professionals doing the machine work and volunteers doing corridor clearing and finish work behind the machines. Pro work was funded with RTP money, and RTP grants are 80/20 matching and the volunteer labor was the in-kind match for the grant funding.

I have not ridden the trails yet, only hobbled through some of the trails on crutches (broken foot) when there were some erosion/sediment control issues (or non-issues as was really the case).

Thanks to Native Trails and these dudes: Professional Trail Builders | Elevated Trail Design, LLC

We put in about 1.75 miles for 2013 at Briar Chapel trails. 10 miles so far: Briar Chapel | Chapel Hill | New Homes | Living Here

It's been a hybrid project combining the land owner contracting for trail, TORC contracting for trail and good old fashioned hand built trail with 100% volunteers.

I also would like to see less asshat-ery going on and look forward to riding all of Black twice or thrice this year. Thanks to all of you that have\will get out their with tools and do what you can.

Another recently built trail known by locals but maybe not visiters to the Pisgah area, is the Estatoe. I always see riders accessing trails from the Hub or Sycamore by coming down Hwy276 and I wonder if they know there is a trail just across the river that'll get you there minus the traffic.

Oh and put me down for a vote against the asshatters. It would be nice if the real local mtnbike community was more vocal than the few miscreants that troll and derail threads daily, and that can only happen by ignoring them and continuing to post positive things.

+1 for Bracken Mtn and Estatoe Trail. Twice this year, once in June and once in October, I made a loop ride using these two trails combined with road , the Brevard greenway, and the forest road out from the fish hatchery.

Love Estatoe trail. I try not to take for granted that you can ride from basically downtown Brevard all the way into the forest behind the ranger station without having to ride in traffic. Bike Path > Estatoe > Pisgah!

It won't be finished until spring, but the Northwest NC Mountain Bike Alliance is working hard on the 3.5-mile Zack's Fork Trail in Lenoir. The trail is being machine-built by volunteers, with particular guidance and labor from Luna Cycles. The NWNC Mountain Bike Alliance recently became a chapter of SORBA, and this is our first project.

Sweet, thanks for this post and the hard work on a new trail. Would like to chat sometime about Phase 3 at Jacob Fork Park in Newton. Phase 3 called for in the master plan was family friendly bike park with pump track, mini flow trail and some wood features.

this thread is a great antidote to the Black Mountain solutions thread, which was utterly depressing in its combativeness.

Some other new riding opportunities include Payne's Creek, Josh Trail & Greg's Loop in Uwharrie National Forest, and don't forget the new Turkey Knob extension in Dupont that opens up a ton of new loop options.

The connector from Joel Branch to FS 475C has already been laid out. It's 1.2 miles and puts you out just past the Art Loeb trail, crossing 475C at a nice gap overlooking downtown Brevard. NEPA and the FS determine how soon this trail will get built.

Any truth to rumor of a trail from the top of bracken connecting to the campground area? Would make an awesome loop. I saw some corridor clearing up there so maybe trail work is planned?
