Laurel will be perfect when they get rid of all the little stupid HAB sections. That takes all the fun out of it for me.

There's only 1 HAB section and that's at the top. Pedal harder

Just rode Laurel mtn this morning, and there was a small bear hanging around the large rock/cave that protrudes out into the trail, about a mile before Sassafras Gap. He wasn't in the cave but was about 30 ft up the bank beside it, so maybe he's made a home in there!?

I would bet if he did that he will move along soon enough. There are enough people that ride and hike there that he won't stick around.

I road up on a smallish black bear in the first sharp left switchback south of Hickory Knob on Black Mountain Trail last Tuesday. No idea how much territory they cover, first time seeing a bear on a bike ride...made me question riding up there alone. Then again, he seemed to want as much to do with me as I did him, bear did a little double take and headed down the mountain. Trail switches back and forth right there the way he headed but never saw him again. Good thing cause my rear brake was cooked about the time I came to the first trail intersection (not sure where that was) and I had to pull the wheel and push the brake pistons back in which was fun after my first bear sighting!

    Off topic, sorta.

On topic, about how long does it take a slow climber to do that Laural/Pilot loop? I'd like to ride that sometime soon. Is the climbing similar to the Big M route?

I saw one a couple of years ago when I was working as a course marshall for the stage race. I was coming down one of those gravel roads over near Bradley Cr. at about 20 mph and he was sitting right in the middle of the road. I hit the brakes hard and he went flying up into the woods. Not sure which one of us was more scared at the time.
