RIP 9 + SLX double crankset... will it work? Any tips?

I'm a big clydesdale, building a 2009 RIP 9, and was looking into the Shimano SLX crankset.

I'm looking at the 2-ring version with bashguard, since it's burly. I have a few questions that Google is not yielding anything on.

    • It's 22/36. Will that fit?
    • Do I need to use the SLX front derrailleur with them?
    • Niner's RIP 9 documentation includes a product warning about Shimano FDs. It only lists a few models. Are those the only *Shimano* FDs that work on a RIP 9, or the only FDs period?
    • Anyone running an SLX 2-chainring crankset successfully that has any advice?

Thanks in advance for any info!

It works great for me, using an XT front der. You just need to adjust the der. so that the shifter doesn't shift to the non-present big ring. Works great for me. BTW, check out BBG Bashguards, http://www.bbgbashguard.com/Mountainbike.html they are sold out now, but should be in stock soon. They are very cheap, super tough, and light. You will save a ton of weight over the stock Shimano guard. You will need new, shorter bolts to attach the new guard though. You can get them cheaply at Pricepoint.

I use the actual SLX derrailleur from the 2x9 crank.

My skid plate bangs on my chain and makes a nasty racket. I took it off but you may have better luck....
