I ride only on the weekends (no mid-week training) on fast rolling XC trails in Marin County (China Camp and Rush Creek). Love tracking with Strava.

Six months ago I bought a 2011 Specialized Epic Carbon Comp 29er on impulse because I trusted the brand and heard great things about 29er wheels and Fox brain shock.

But since then, I've befriended some local pros and shop owners who have been educating me on what is what and I started feeling the deficiencies in the stock Epic. Biggest thing I am frustrated with are 1) the wheelset and 2) stock drive train on hills. Before I go Arch's w DT 240s and XTR group, I heard about the RDO.

As luck would have it, my new pro friend works at a shop that demos the RDO. I took one out this weekend with fox talas, Arches on I9, and XO group.

In comparison to my Epic, the RDO floats over roots and potholes, climbs hills like nothing and so nimble on downhills. On a 11 mile loop I frequent using Strava, shaved 2 minutes off each leg and made KOM on the back leg. Wow is this bike fast!

    I have to have one!!

Now I need to figure out if I can upgrade wheelset to Arch's and DR
240's on Epic with a rear 135mm hub plus an adaptor to fit my 142mm Epic frame - I want to upgrade Epic knowing I will switch to the RDO when cash is good.

    I envy you RDO owners!
IMO just hold off on any wheel upgrade untill you learn a bit more about what wheels will work best for you.

The Current Arch is a bit of a nothing wheel, It's not super light, It's not super strong, It's not super stiff & its not super wide.

It's kind of a wheel you choose when you cant make up your mind what you should have.

The Arch is due a make over & the new Arch is going to be much better so if you must go arch wait for that one.

There are heaps of people on here that will say that They have got the Arch & it's been fine & had no problems with it.

Wow thats something to strive for ( It's been fine & had no Problems )

    What weight are you ?

    My weight is 230.

Not sure what to look at other than Stan's since I don't have an unlimited budget.

I can wait for the new model, but when is it due out?

Ok at 230 lb go to the flow, It's only 50 grams more & it's wider, stiffer & stronger.

    It's also the same price.

Epics are fantastic bikes, excellent race bikes for sure. The model you bought, despite the carbon front triangle, has complete crap parts on it though (to meet the price point). The wheels are really atrocious, heavy with bad hubs. You can always open the brain up a bit more on your epic to get better small bump compliance. I've also found that having a brain rear shock and a non-brain front (like your epic comp has) results in difficulties balancing the front and rear suspension. You can do it, but it takes some work.

I'd also say go with the stans's flows at your weight. Although the new Arch EX wouldn't be a terrible choice if you don't do anything too extreme and use some Comp spokes.

    Thanks for the advice.

I am trying to figure out how to build a wheel set in anticipation of buying the RDO but use it on the Epic in short term.

    Frames take different hub widths.

    See this thread.
135mm rear hub possible to adapt to Epic 142mm space?

Lots of hubs can be converted. If you stick with Stan's, DT, Chris King, etc you will be fine for going back and forth.

I9 wheels also offer some of (or the greatest) axle configuration flexible in the industry. Front and rear can be configured for almost any currently available axle. I am running I9 Enduro hubs and Flow rims. Very nice.

Got some new pics. Bike is complete only missing parts are rear derailler, pedals and crank.

It weighs 8,86 kg. The missing parts weigh 624 gram and 613 gram for the crank so the grand total will be 10,115 kg with pedals. Want to replace the stock RS maxle with a Tune one wich saves 30 grams. Can u cut the RDO seatpost btw? This one is very long for me so can save some weigth there too.

very nice looking bike. I could not figure out the seat post. Who makes it. It is perfect looking for this frame and I would like to switch to it.

Personally I will cut mine but only have half the amount showing that you do. If my post was up that high, I would fear cutting it and would rather have the neck of the frame protected

My LBS ordered mine Thursday. They were told one month before it comes in. Large in Vana White. Great compliment to my MCR. Will go X.O. 2x10. Unsure on wheels. Currently use Hadley on Arches with the MCR.

When will it be done? I cant wait to see some pictures and weights.

I am also builing a Black licorice with a lefty and I really want to see one done so I can see what it will look like and weigh. My frame is due in the next shipment (I hope).

I hope it will be finished within about 14 days. I'm waiting for the front derailleur, ENVE handlebar and Gore shifting cables. I hope I have the correct adapter for the lefty.

Which lefty adapter do you have?
The project 321 tapered adapter is the most common example.
I have one of those and also an experimental prototype tapered adapter on order.

This is the one I have:

It's not new. The seller told me it came off an Air9 carbon.

Can you tell me if I need another adapter part to install the lefty?

Yep. The washer is the part that spaces the standard adapter to the tapered width.
All the pieces are present in that photo. Although I note that it has been cut so hopefully will provide the stack height you want for your stem on top of the lefty.

I have had 2 Tang bikes & have tried many colour themes & IMO Tang with Red looks cheap.

So Gold Hubs, Gold KMC chain, Gold FSA stem spacers & Orange Jag wire cables etc.

I will take more pictures of my RDO with different wheels & post tonight.

The RDO needs colour coding IMO.

Whats wrong with going all black? The frame & fork should provide enough colour for tang.

    Small Frame, XTR

Small Frame, XTR Drive train, Formula R1 brakes, Stans Crest wheels with Hope 2 hubs (20mm axle) Conti Mountain King front, Stans Raven back. Niner RDO seatpost, Edge handle bars and stem. I could have made it lighter in some places for sure but 24lbs for full suspension is pretty good.

... and if we just ... My NEW Custom jet9 RDO - "Ladies Version"

Just got my Niner Jet9 RDO a few days ago. It's my first "29er" and I LOVE IT!!!

Initially, I was skeptical as I thought it would feel too big being 5' 4", NOT SO! it's truly "O"mazing

My build came to feather light 22 lbs

Just a reminder. Send me a message if any of you would like to trade. I have a near new Large Tang frame and would like to trade for a Medium Tang or Black.

How is the balance of the lefty combined with the rp23 fox?

BTW Nice build. I am considering pretty much the same thing just with enve wheels.

There will be a few of us with Lefty RDO's. My Vana RDO should ship this week. My Experimental Prototype carbon lefty steerer will hopefully ship in the next week ish. Then I'll build it up.

My wheels are I9's on Crests I built up from a set of 26" I9 Ultralite's I had.

Here's a Large RDO I built up for my riding buddy. I've shown it because of the Lefty and how it fits on the Large frame. Very tight. I bought a red ano King headset but couldn't make that work. The Cane Creek works fine once you take apart the upper cap.

Wheelset is Project 321 with Crests, CX-Rays, and AC red ano valve stems . Front travel is 120mm. Weight is 23.5 pounds including the 360g Adamo saddle and Candy's. Crank is a 22-32-bash with a 22-36 double FD.

As an owner of a 22.3lb Tallboy I've noticed there are not nearly as many killer Tallboy builds like there are as J RDOs. I didn't come here to crash the party but to give it up to Edlijas, Keillijayne, SandOkan, and Dr. Power- All of you have insanely sick builds! I like each one for different reasons.

Kellijayne- I love the attitude in the graphics! The build is the most sensible with XO and Easton carbon wheels. $$ Spent in all the right places...

SandOkan- All blacked out with the RDO cockpit and SRAM XX/WC setup is sick. The Tune Smartfoot is unique. And at 22.3lbs you know it's fast.

Edlijas- Full XTR, ENVE and Left.. WoW, that is the sickest build! Man I'd love to test ride that machine...

Dr.Power- Rotor cranks, XX and full fox rear and front is text book smart.

Looks the same as mine. A lefty Max PBR (140mm). With 29'er spacers max it could be is a risky 120mm, or a more common 110mm.

EDIT: I was wrong - see post below, is an XLR at 90mm

    Ok

I need to shift my thinking then, I think I'm hard done by if it rains for 4 days in a row in winter.

Any way nice bike & I'm sure you will love it when you do get to ride it.

She never got a dime back from Mountain High Cyclery...Larry just stiffed her and now he's going out of business. She's got a backcharge filed through Discover which should be resolved this week. Hopefully she'll get her full $5k+ back from them and they can go after Larry.

In the meantime, she ordered a white RDO from BikeBling.com - 1-800-BIKEPRO is Bike Bling. She ordered it on Thursday, had it on her doorstep the following Tuesday. We are just waiting for the fork to arrive from Fox tomorrow....and we'll start the build. We've been accumulating parts over the past month....should be a sweet build.

The frame guards are sweet. She'll get one for her frame as well.

Total suck. I was afraid to ask after all the stories popping up on here lately. Really, really bad situation. Feel quite fortunate to have gotten my frame, guessing I may have been the last lucky one.

Went out with her for a shake down ride.....she was blown away by how the bike just felt 'right' for her. Damn, she was fast on it. Had to keep my WFO uncorked to keep up..
