Niner carbon fork - spacer above the stem?

...so I know that the encyclopedia of tech states that there should be no spacer above the stem when using a Niner carbon fork (mine is straight/QR version), but I noticed this picture from one of the front page articles:

It would be nice if I could drop my stem a bit without risking cutting the steerer too short to be desirable for resale. Is this ok? Whats the real world experience with spacers above the stem?

from what i have been told, its a issue with eh expander plug. You need to make sure the plug is in the area of the stem.

The stem needs to be clamped around where the expansion plug is to provide extra support/strength for the carbon steer tube from the clamping pressure of the stem. I have a 5mm spacer above my stem on my Niner fork but would not be comfortable stacking spacers higher than that above the stem. Possibly try a negative rise stem to get lower.
