Niner Air 9 RDO build questions.

Ok so I just bought a 2012 Niner Air 9 RDO frame and I'm sure I'm going to have a bunch of build questions. My first question is about the headset. I see the Niner site sells a Niner brand headset. Which is the one I need for my frame? I'm not sure if it's the Internal Tapered(zero stack) or Integrated Tapered.

Niner Air 9 RDO build questions.

Niner website has an encyclopedia that is super helpful. It will give you all the details you need. Check it out!

Have you unboxed it yet? My frame came with the headset.

I have unboxed it and I wasn't lucky enough to get a free headset.

This might be a dumb question but how do I know what crankset is compatible with a 73mm PF30 BB?

If it didn't come with a headset then call Niner. They are usually in a small white box.

I bought the frame through Competitive Cyclist. I just checked their ad and it states that it comes with a CaneCreek HS. I just emailed them. Hopefully they send me one. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm running XX1 cranks on mine.

    Per the Encyclopedia:

SRAM recommended 2x chainrings: 26/39T or lower
    SRAM XX1 recommended max chainring: 32T. Q-Factor: 168mm
SHIMANO XT recommended 2x chainrings: 28/40T or lower
SHIMANO XTR 2x is not recommended. Both versions (40t/48.8mm chain line and 38t/46.6mm chain line) position the large chainring in a way that it may contact the frame.

    You need BB30 compatible cranks.

They will probably have to get one from Niner.

    Next question.....

I bought an X0 2x10 crankset (BB30/PF30 BB). My whole plan was to use it as a 1x10 using one of those new Raceface Narrow Wide, Wolf Tooth or an MRP Bling Ring. I'm reading that it might be a little more complicated than just bolting on the new ring depending on BB/crank type. Anyone know if the RF Narrow Wide, Wolf Tooth or the MRP Bling Ring would work on my crankset?

It should work. Did you get a direct mount ring?

I haven't bought the ring yet, but it looks like a direct mount ring would be the way to go.

I am pretty excited, I just got an RDO frame, black licorice, size medium. I want to build it up XTR 3X10. Looking for the best deals on a build kit/parts. Shimano has all these codes for its XTR parts, 980,985, etc. Pretty confusing. Anybody know which number is best for shifters, brakes, F/R derailler for the 3x10 "trail" group? The Niner spec sheet is a little vague for me.

Check Shimano's website, they give pretty good descriptions.

Do you guys do anything special to carbon frames before you build them up? I'm going to order my Air 9 Carbon tomorrow.

You'll want some Carbon Assembly Paste for your seatpost.

What about in the bottom bracket? Just grease or anti-sieze, or something else?

If it is an Air 9 Carbon, it will have an aluminum insert in the BB shell, so I would put grease in it before installing the EBB, CYA or whatever you are putting in it. If it is an Air 9 Carbon RDO, the BB shell is carbon. I used Carbon Assembly Paste in mine before installing the Bottom Bracket.

I also put a little grease on the outside of the headset races before dropping them in the head tube.
