Niner Air 9 Carbon Chainkeeper 1x10

I have now tried 2 different chainkeepers... the paul components chain keeper and mrp 1.x BB mount... with no luck.

The Paul mounts too high on the seatube due to the massive BB shell, and the CYA BB insert prevents a standard spacer based BB mount chainguide from working on BB.

Anybody have any other suggestions, there must be others out there wanting to run 1x9/10 on an Air 9 Carbon?

I need something that drops a long way down, like a high mount clamp FD

You could possibly modify a Paulcomp chain keeper - all it would take is a small strip of aluminium and an extra bolt to allow the mount to slide higher up the seat tube. Part of the chain keeper would have to be flipped around (which in itself would raise the clamp a bit) but from looking at it I think it could work. You could get tricky with a MRP, by using part of the existing mount and fabricating a seat tube mount for it...

I'm waiting on a A9C, and was intending on using the a 1.X, so good to have a heads up on this one!

yeah, thanks... i'm going to try flipping the paul chainkeeper and see if that works...it might do it... will update tonight. I spoke to Steve at Niner, and said he couldnt believe this setup hadnt been run by the testers, and they may have to look at doing something themselves. not great for me but they were helpful!

if you have any brain waves, let me know!

wont work either.... this has same issue as the MRP 1.x, the CYA insert overlaps the BB, so there is no spacer option here, BB mounts wont work. i am looking at the widgit as they have some in stock and can get to me on monday! i may just get cheap ass FD until then.

yeah, somebody contacted me offline about that one. i really dont want to have run a bash plate and inner catcher...

Looks like PaulComponents have come up trumps and will have an extended drop chainkeeper on website at end of month.. until then, i'll run a front derailleur. so there is a solution for those 1.x A9C runners. Thanks Paul!!

dparry - not to derail your thread, but do you think you could post some additional shots of your build? I've got a line on an A9c in Tang and would build it with parts I already own (white fork like yours, white stem, etc.). I'm having a hard time wrapping my arms around how it might look.

    Thanks.

Have you tried without any retention device up front?

I used to run my Jet9 as a 1x9 using an X0 short RD and a tight chain (and non-ramped chainring from Middleburn). The chain never dropped in thousands of miles, except in a crash. Was also very clean looking.

no i haven't thought about that... the renthal chainring is unramped also but XX is long cage der.. i dont fancy risking dropped chain, even with the frame guards on a carbon frame. sure it may work but not for me!... agree, would look clean though. if the Paul solution works, then that will be clean, small, matt black etc..

sure, will do. i wanted to go all black but dont think the 2011 fox f29 terralogic comes in black. the white stem is a loner till i work out my stem length, then will go back to black... so all black apart from white fork. i'll put some picks up anyway for you. any particular areas?

We've got this new iteration of the MRP 1x coming out in a month or so. Its currently in production, shown is a pre-production version. It will be black, but you can get a sense of the overall shape and design. It features a beautiful (and light) aluminum seat tube clamp mount. Any reason this wouldn't work on the Air 9 carbon? I've only admired them from afar.

On your site you don't recommend the existing model with M960 cranks. Will this new version work with cut-down 960's?

Any version will work "cut-down" 960s b/c the issue has to do with that model's spider clearing the guide, but if they're cut down theres no problem. Cheers

Awsome, black will be the only production color offered? That white prototype would be perfect for my new project (an SS / 1x10 2011 Flash 29er Carbon 2)

driver bob, that doesnt work (i have it!!) it cant sit far enough down the seatube due to huge flaring at the BB shell. Paul is working on one, meant to be out last month but you know how these things are.

MRP have their solution in now just havent seen how to order. i'm hoping to get one or the other at interbike.

Damn'it... I'll have to measure my Flash frame (went it eventually arrives) and check back. For the time being the MRP is still the best bet, looks like it will be at least December before my bike arrives so there should be options on the market by then.

Would the MRP 1X work on the Noir XC 1.1 team crank? It has a bash guard build in. Or should I go with Jump stop by N-gear?

You'd have to take the bashguard off and get either siglespeed chainring bolts or bolt spacers, but the 1x works with the Noir just fine.

the mrp was $100 as well. they dont even have a part number yet. i just called mrp directly. just tell them you want the new 1x guide that is made for clamping on higher to the seat post. they only had white in stock which was fine for me. i think i spoke to a guy named Ryan.

Part numbers for the MRP 1x seat-tube mount versions are, 20-9-300 (black) and 20-9-301 (white).

They're a beautiful piece of kit made with precision right here in our Grand Junction facility. They cost more to manufacture than the BB mount version - thus the higher retail @ $99.95.

They're a beautiful piece of kit made with precision right here in our Grand Junction facility. They cost more to manufacture than the BB mount version - thus the higher retail @ $99.95.

    Cheers
are these available to order now? where can they be bought? i couldnt find them on the MRP website.

They are available now, I don't think the distributors have gotten theirs quite yet, but we have them in stock here at HQ. You can order directly at 970.241.3518 or contact your LBS and they can order from us.

Working on a brand new website, so some of our latest products aren't on the current one.

    Thanks

    MRP review

just switched from single set up to geared and finally put the chain guide on a couple of days ago. two rides with the MRP chain guide in place. Very pleased. First of all, the set up was pretty straight forward. I was about concerned that I'd be tweaking it a bit mid-ride but there was none of that. I also expected to hear some noise. With the 10 gears I'm running in the back that seemed like a wide range for the chain to span w/out any clicking or clanging, but nope, there was none of that either. As you can see in the picture I'm running the Rotor Q-Ring on my XTR cranks. I was a bit concerned that the odd shaped was going to give me fits on the chain guide, again nope. If it fits with that goofy oval, it will fit with anything. Both rides I have on it were pretty bumpy. One was a local trail out here in VA with a lot of roots and smallish drops. The other was a long backcountry-ish, (for me anyway) epic along the Blue Ridge. Basically, the stuff you see in the background of the picture was my ride home. 7 mile downhill with lots of boulders, etc. I thought for sure I was going to throw the chain - I think I would have thrown it with a normal derailleur. Everything held in place just fine. Pretty much set and forget - as they say. The chain guide comes with two rubber shims (one is about 1mm thick and the other is probably 3/4 mm. The MRP won't fit on the A9C with either of those. I ended up just using two pieces of electrical tape as a shim and that worked fine. Barely had to tighten the guide. In fact I could slide it easily up and down to position it and didn't tighten it afterwards and it held in place throughout the rides.

So what's the consensus for the best chain keeper for the A9C?

I have the E13 seat tube mounted unit and it's OK... way overpriced though and I get a touch of chain rub in the extreme ends of the cassette.

I have used the e.13 and it works great...no issues. Haven't tried the MRP.

I've gone back to SS though on the A9C (and will be getting rid of my frame at some point in the not so distant future as well) so my 2 month old in perfect condition e.13 guide is for sale if anyone is interested. shoot me a pm

It actually will work, but it will require a little cutting. I ran into the same issue trying to run a Paul Chain Keeper on my SIR 9. I doesn't fit the EBB out of the box. I busted out the Dremel, and trimmed the Paul down until it fit the EBB. It worked like a champ!

I quit using it though and went back to singlespeed. Not because of issues with the chain keeper, but because I'm not smart enough to use a derailluer...

The Paul keeper will work with the Biocentric EBB, but you have to hit it with a Dremel Tool to trim it down a little.
