Name the New Niner Contest, Phase 2! Time to Vote...and another sneak peek image!

Alrighty. Recruit your friends, call your mom. We have hundreds of possible names for the new Niner. We've eliminated the obvious trademark issues and things that didn't fit the rules. Now is the time to sort the wheat from the chaff. If you are excited about this bike and want it to have a name you love, get in there and vote. You have til Monday March 18, 6pm MST. We will post updates and biased opinions as to the quality of certain frontrunners all weekend on our facebook page. I'll offer some extra prizes, too. :-)

Once we get the Final Five, we will check to see if any of them are Cylons. We will also check for trademark issues etc, again and remove any that we can't legally use - moving the next most popular name into the voting. We will then vote for the winner at Niner, and will post our reasons why - with video!

Yeah, I can't imagine many are going to read through all of these entries. I wish there would be a couple stages of voting instead of one stage to 5 entries...

Damn I wished I changed my submission from MCC9 to MC^29.

(The 2 would be a squared symbol to signify "CC" and the entire name would be Marin County California 9 in homage of "The Birthplace of Mountain Biking"). There's a lot of graphic play that could happen on the design to make this happen. And MC29 looks a lot better than MCC9.

    FAIL!

I've found three or four that I like as well as mine. I don't know how the voting will affect the final decision, but maybe the Niner crew will pick the one they like the best out of the top vote winners.

But everyone should vote for mine

I would just like to point out that a bridge in Europe won a voting contest to be named the Chuck Norris bridge, but the government shot down the idea.

So now's your chance to vote for CNC 9, or Chuck Norris Cycle. Because this bike will be so Chuck Norris-like. When you pedal it the wheels don't spin, it spins the Earth...

I'm pretty sure AMP9 is going to win, but I think that was already the name of the prototype. Kudos for someone jumping on that first.

I voted for your AMP 9 entry too. Though there are a number of quite good and classy options on there - I ended up ticking about 10 boxes.

Surprisingly: someone seems to have voted for mine (aside from that one of mine I voted for myself!). Thank you, other voter!

Well, if someone very determined wants to game this stuff, it's pretty hard to stop them. But I suspect the Niner folk will apply their best judgement to the apparent results: just relax and go with it. No-one owns that bike just yet.

Nonono... Not you! You like my entry so I'm loving you at the moment (in a thankx bro kind of way offcourse ;-) )
This morning when everyone had about 5% of the votes, keifla123 had his three entries up to 14% a piece... Seemed odd.

I wonder if there would be a trademark issue with AMP Research who was a 90's era innovator of FS bikes?

Been wondering about that one aswell, but my guess is: Since they are no longer around they can't hold a trademark?

For now my mindset is: Let niner wonder about that one ;-) and I'm going out for a bike ride!

AMP 9 is my personal favorite. Sounds good by itself and the acronym makes sense.
But I think Banshee bikes might have an issue with it, Amp | Banshee Bikes: DH Race, Freeride, All Mountain, Trail, Slopestyle, DJ/Street/4x, Aggressive Trail, Cross Country

Please, vote in NUD name [Control+F and type NUD to find]

See the name concept here: #470

I not saw the FLO name as an option on the list. I also liked so much the concept of this name.

Isn't there an energy drink called amp? I don't know about that one . sounds too close for a trademark. Plus, is this bike an all mountain bike ? Or cross country ? All mountain could be a little vague in the bike market today.

Good news, you can stop worrying about the trademark issues... Looks like I'm off the win by a long way! Let's just hope I can stay in the top five?!
Can anyone tell abbeytrails he can turn of his voting script? It's obvious he's going to win...

All mountain vague? It's perfectly the type of riding this bike was designed for... A bit more heavy duty than XC-bikes for us Funloving types and a bit more subdued then full on enduro...

It looks to me that Niner needed to pick there top 10 from the list & then let people vote from there.

No worries guys - we left our final say and some legal review to sort it all out. We pulled a few names that had obvious issues out of the voting, but there are still quite a few that just won't make it past the suits. In the end, it's a pretty fun game and I am stoked so many people are voting.

It seems this is the new trend in today's internet contests.. Recruit your friends, family, social internet, twitter, facebook, etc. to rack up votes. This method just seems a little ridiculous since there's so many ways to cheat the system. Why wouldn't Niner just take all the name suggestions, shuffle through them internally and determine the winner. I don't get it.. Oh well.

Vote was closed yesterday evening and the spreadsheet of all the entries and all the votes and IP adresses were submitted to Niner.

The response rate and creativity of names blew us all away. Hang tight as Niner sifts through the data, checks in with Trademarks and updates us with their selections.

I hope Niner realizes all someone would need is an IP changer to shift the vote in their favor.
Either way I'm sure they'll make the right choice as I'm sure the bike will be sweet.

I think the poll voting was a way to sort it out a bit, Niner will have the final word and trumps highest vote count. Even then they will need to check on trademarks and such for legal use of the new name as mentioned in the article.

I hope you are calling it the "JAY9"

I called, and nobody can say when the new frame will be available. If you could let us know, I think it help a lot of plan our summers.

    Name the Niner - update!

Sorry for the delay guys, it's taking a bit longer to get thru checking for legal etc. on the names than I anticipated. We have some good names and a few new people got bumped into the top 5 when a couple of high vote getters didn't make thru the "does someone own this already" test. Cheers, Carla

Just checked (for some reason the cache on my mac has kept the final score visible)... Your entries didn't score in the top. 0,5 and 0,4% of the votes.

I guess the ninerds have a hard time finding 5 possible names that have a legal thumbs up!

or they've looked at the suggestions that didn't make the cut and like them better ??

IMO they should have done it the other way around: Picked their top 5 or ten and then put that list out for voting.

Thanks for letting me know. Too bad I missed the voting. If I would have voted, I could have moved up my suggestion another .1% maybe.

So could you also tell me what the top choices were? How much % of vote were they getting. I'm curoius what the top choices were.

    Thanks

(I'm sure legalities are a tough one. I had come up with a few other abbreviations as well, but found they often had been used in other areas. Particularily in the automotive field. Lots of 3 letter abreviations used in cars and motor designations.)

Lets just start from scratch and name it the CBH9 because after all, the cart was truly before the horse on this one.

Yep - have to say this is a fail (not quite epic fail) on Niner's part. Even if they weren't ready, they could have kept the momentum going with more pictures, teases and updates on the legal process.

Now, other than waiting to see if they won, I think it's faded from everyone's memories and what little buzz there is, is about how badly this is going rather than about the new bike.

I gave them a call about the "new frame". According to the Coloradan who I spoke to, they have no idea when the frame will be available and "Maybe someone here knows when it might be available, but I don't know who".

Here's how I see it... They liked my name a lot, put it through the legal treadmill, it failed, now they are driving a hard bargain with the owner of said name to be able to buy the name from them and still give me the frame... And offcourse that takes time!

HBC9. Borrowing the idea from Home Brewed Components, they are going to sell you the bike now, and then deliver it in 12-16 months.

Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! The Winner of New Niner Contest

And finally, the result: Name the New Niner Contest! The Winner!

The Winner is [ Beat The Drums]:

"ROS 9 (Roots of Steel)", by LuckyCharm 4x4.

Not the ROS 9 "original name idea", but ROS 9 - Ride. Over. Stuff, by Niner Staff!

    [ NSR 9 - Niner Staff Rules]

From the "Name the New Niner Contest! The Winner!" post:

Well, that took FOREVER. But we have a winner

We received dozens of amazing potential names for the new Niner Hardtail, and hundreds of crazy ones. Our riders did a great job of helping us to separate the wheat from the chaff and a few people went the extra mile and gamed the internet to try for the win. We expected that - the internet is 98% mischief and this isn't our first rodeo. Getting the top five sorted was the next step. It took longer than we realized to sort through all the potential copyright issues and what-not. To that end, the overwhelming vote getter and a few others at the top of the list had to be removed for potential legal ramifications - we'd prefer to spend our time riding rather than arguing with lawyers. But, at the end, we had some fantastic options and some good ideas to argue over.

So, who won the final vote? Well...

Our long travel hardtail has features that we consider mandatory on any current bike - 142mm spacing, tapered steertube compatibility, single or geared compatible, beautiful custom forgings. It is also made from a material that exudes heritage and soul. We believe that it is this dual personality that makes it what it is - when you get out on the trail, this bike is just plain fun.

So, in the end, we picked the name that best reflected the personality of the bike, a name that could have multiple meanings. The new Niner long travel hardtail has Roots of Steel, but when you are out on the trail, no matter what happened at work that day, all you're really thinking is: Ride. Over. Stuff.

So that's it - Simple. Clear. ROS 9.

The ROS 9 is going to come in 2 color options - we are going to introduce a new color - we are still working on the details, but I think that fans of the bike above will be happy. For now, we have some final work to do, and we look forward to sharing the completed version with you in 8-10 weeks.

Congratulations to MTBr user "LuckyCharm 4x4". We will contact you to figure out what size frame you need, and what color you want. Watch your MTBr messages, and thanks for the great idea!

    Cheers,
    Carla

    Quoting myyself:

It would only be proper to give the company another chance.

I called Niner back, and spoke with a person who was better informed, and quite helpful.

The frame may be available in late June, the name is now known, but the details are being kept a bit close to the vest. As many of us have figured out, it will be long travel fork specific, very short chainstay, ss or geared, steel

For those of you who don't remember, I won the contest. I just got my bike a couple weeks ago and now I have completed the build:

I set it up SS for now. I think the XO crank goes perfect with the frame color.

Here it is with my Air9

I can't wait to get it out on the trails... if it would ever stop raining.

I like it. It looks like it should be pretty nimble. What size frame is that and how much travel is in the front.
