First ride pic. Felt agile and light as expected. I need to drop the stem length a bit, but otherwise required zero adjustments. This is my third niner the others being an air9 and one9.So far not disappointed.

Nice Build! Is yours an XL? My frame from BB (hot tamale red)will be here Wednesday and my build is very close to yours 1 x 9 with the mrp bling ring, no tubes flows, thomson stem and post as I'm 280. Do you have a weight on the build?

Here is mine - My 2011 frame was warrantied for a headset issue - so I switched everything over to the 2012. What a great bike, couldn't be happier.

    Here's my Arctic White EMD9:

Love it except for the how the rear derailleur cable is routed. Cable rests right against the headtube and I know if it weren't for the clear frame patch, the paint would be rubbed raw. I think it's a stupid design on Niner's part. Or maybe it's on my part lol. Anyone found a workaround to this "flaw"?

    Recent Build

Got it build up over the weekend, only had 1 ride and am loving it.
29ers are no SUV as some says over 26er. Glad to roll on bigger wheels, climbs well and decents better.
I will still ride my 26 but for now the Niner will be the go to bike.

    My 2011 EMD9 - G2G!

Today I finished my first build ever. Did everything myself, with the exception of building the wheels. Had fun and learned a lot! I can't wait for my Fruita/Grand Junction trip next weekend!

Maybe a little bit on the heavy side, but for the money this is a really nice set of wheels. Real solid and stiff. Would buy another pair of these without hesitation.

    Shakedown report!

So I had a GREAT time on my new Niner out in Fruita and Grand Junction (4/19-4/22)! I LOVED the fit and how it handled! Also very happy with how much of the techy stuff I was able to clear on it. I was able to hang nicely with the rest of my group on FS bikes. Had to adjust my rear derailleur a bit during the first ride, but nothing major, just part of the learning curve for doing my own wrenching.

The only real problem I had was with a bit of seatpost slippage. Running a Thomson Elite post and a Hope QR clamp; has anybody else had any difficulties with this combo?

    Anyway here's some pics!

I got back into biking last Summer with a Marin Palisades Trail 29'er...it was a good bike and got me back onto the trails. Last Fall I picked up a Niner EMD 9 frame and a Niner tapered carbon fork with the hope of having it built this Spring. Unfortunately work slowed down a bit...so had to take a different approach.

A new headset, stem, & bars took care of the front end. I also added a new seat & seat post...everything else came from the Marin (for now).

I'm hoping to pick up more parts as the Summer goes on to complete the EMD the way that I want it and to get the Marin back together so I can sell it.

Here are a couple of pics I took on my ride today.
(sorry for the crappy cell phone pics...I'll try to get better pics soon.)

Thanks! I'm happy with it so far. It is definitely lighter than what I was riding and it climbs and corners better too. The rider just needs to be more confident on it...I'm getting there.

Decide to go with 100m fork because some say 80mm can get a little twitchy at high speed:

An updated pic of my EMD.

    I recently added:
a new wheelset (Stan's Arch EX with Hope hubs) with Racing Ralph's (tubeless)
Hope 2-piece brake rotors (front rotor has to sit on the shelf until I replace the caliper...the rivets on the rotor rub against the caliper )
    Hope seat clamp
    Hope bar ends

    Re: EMD pics?

I flipping love this bike. Changed out the stem, seat post, and tires. Had another picture a few weeks back, but I've since put on WTB Nanoraptors, an FSA stem, and Titec seatpost.
Manitou MInute 80mm fork, ZTR Crest rims, SRAM 1x9, Truvativ cranks, WTB SST saddle with Ti rails, Avid Elixer 3 brakes.

EDIT: Higher res pic. Other was fuzzy.

    EMD pics?

Anyone have an extra EMD9 in Red laying around? Preferably NOT the hydro formed version? 11' or earlier like the one above?

    Looking for a Medium.

    Thanks!

Very nice EMD! Is that a medium?

So tempted to pick up either an EMD or Air 9...after building up a EMD for my girlfriend.

    Thanks. Yes, it's a medium.

The bike feels great out on the trail so far. Much better than I expected.

I'm curious, why not the hydroformed. I thought they were even better.

    Well, couple reasons..

    1. I wanted a red one. (Currently comes in white, or black).
    2. Making it a rigid with carbon fork, which only the 1-1/8 comes in red to match.
    3. This will be a commuter/road bike that I'll be building cheaper, so older, outdated frames are less expensive.
    4. Round tubes are awesome !

    Fair enough.

    1) I have seen the hydroformed in red in the past though. So it might be out there.
    2) Is it just a color issue on the fork, or is a rigid fork simply not available for the hydroformed.
    3) Unless other people realize how awesome red niners with round tubes are. Then prices could be higher than hydroformed.
    4) Yes they are. I am fortunate enough to own a red, round tube EMD. I just picked it up last fall. I love it. Good luck.

Thanks! Yeah, I actually picked on up this weekend! There is a hydro formed one, but I got the old version for $210. So happy about that!

For the fork, the hydro formed has a tapered steerer. They didn't make a red carbon for with the tapered steerer. Just a preference thing about the matching.. Like I said, this will be a fun build for commuting, pulling the kids, and getting some road work in when our trails are closed.

    Looking forward to building up!

I have the old Ardent in front and a CrossMark in back. Mine is also a 1x10. I purchased it used. I'm not sure what it was set up for. But it seems to work well enough for me.

That is one sweet-looking bike/build. I'm waffling between the medium and large--do you happen to know your saddle height (ctr of BB to top of saddle)?

Thanks. The saddle height is about 28 inches. I'm 6'1 and liked the shorter TT of the medium frame.

Cool, thanks. I'm 5'10.5", and have a 28.75" saddle height. I'm thinking the medium with the Niner steel fork would be good.

    UPDATES:
My EMD 9 last graced these pages here. Since then a few modifications have been made. I began having really bad elbow problems and swapped out the White Bros. for a RS Reba. Updated the chainrings and added Avid Elixer brakes (I guess I should have the cables? hoses? cut shorter). Can't say the brakes are vastly different, but they are RED! I have recently upgraded the wheelset to WTB Frequencys and will probably go tubeless soon. And I think I will go back to the rigid fork as well...

    Hi KillBill,

I'm from the far east, not in the US. Bike parts are a little more expensive here.
Build cost is around 3k USD.

These are the parts cost I got from the net (USD).
You might get a better deal of you search harder :

    EMD Frame - 550
    RDO fork - 550
    Stem - 89
    Handlebar - 199
    Seat Post - 199
    XT Groupset - 600
    Seat - 100
    Grips (ESI) - 20
    Wheelset - 775
    Tires - 80

Came off 26" haro flightline. LOVING the new ride!
Acceleration, cornering, grip, and general stabilty/feel is great!
    SO light. 24.3lbs. Ole 26er was 30lbs..
So didn't feel the "sluggishness" That some might notice coming from a 26" wheel
Only comlpaint would be the cable holders on the right side of the top tube caught and ripped the knee of my new bibs 1st day out..
Working on a fix for this..

Just had this delivered today for my son.

I bought all the parts myself on various sites and I'm going to have my LBS build it. Right now I'm sitting at about $1300 minus a saddle and the bike shop is doing the labor free. A new 1 star build is $1500 and I've been able to get some better quality stuff than would be on the 1 star.

    Frame: XS EMD 9
Fork: Manitou Tower Comp 15mm thru axle 100mm travel
    Headset: Cane Creek 40
Wheels: WTB Frequency i19 TCS with XT hubs
    Drivetrain: X7 1X10
    Cassette: SRAM PG-1030 11-36T
Crank: Race Face Evolve 170mm with 32T NW
    Brakes: Hayes Stroker Ryde 180mm/160mm
    Stem: Truvativ Hussfelt 40mm 0DEG
Bars: Chinese Carbon 680mm flat bar
    Grips: Race Face lock on
    Seat Post: Brand X Carbon
    Seat: TBD
    Pedals: Magnesium Flats

That's about everything, I could have picked a few things differently to save a little weight, but my goal was to keep it under $1500. Pics to follow once it's all put together. It may be a while though, the RD is coming from Taiwan.

Not so patiently waiting for my Arctic White '14 EMD to arrive on thursday. I got the frame from Chain love for 275 shipped. Can't complain there.

For now its getting the components off a build that is too small for me

    Manitou Tower Expert
    Sun Ringle Charger Comps
I've got nics on it now but I've read some concerns about the tire clearance so we'll see i guess
Set up 1x10 with race face deus cranks, xt shadow plus, xt chain and cassette, deore shifter
Deore m615's although i fear I will need a longer hose for the rear
Ordered the niner alloy seatpost and Cane Creek 40 headset
Basic Race face bars and stem.

I'm looking at the new Reba's. I'd like to go thru axle and take advantage of the tapered head tube.
