My EMD9 is out of the shipping box.

All parts ordered or on workbench, really just waiting on the handlebar... Wheelset should arrive next week. Headset installed as well. It should hit the trails on Thanksgiving weekend. Photos to come.

I feel your pain! I'm also in the long-drawn-out process of building a '11 Hot Tamale EMD 9. I'm making only slightly faster progress since I'm on a public school teacher's salary! At this point, I have the fork (Reba RLT Ti), bars (Niner Flat-top alloy), headset & spacers, bottom bracket, seat post collar, and skewers. Fortunately, I covered a few extra classes last month, so I was able to order my seatpost and stem (both Thomson) yesterday.

Man, I want to finish this thing and get to riding it!

2011 Large EMD from Jenson's great sale.

    2010 RockShox Reba Race

Sram X7 Shifters, Crank and FD 2x10

    Sram X9 RD

    Avid Exlir R

    Bontrager Mustang Wheels

    Maxxis Ardent 2.25

Various parts bin stuff for stem, post, seat, bars, pedals and so on.

26 lbs. The tires are a bit heavy, but they should ride well if not racing.

The chainring was a hair too wide, since 10 speed chains are narrower than 9 speed chains.

Nice! Have you gotten out to ride it yet? I'm waiting for a front derailleur to show up (hopefully today) so I can finish switching mine over to a 2x10 setup.

    Hot Tamale

Well since the Hot Tamales are sneaking into this thread, just had my maiden voyage on Wed. Skies were dark and rain was coming but I got 15 miles on it to see how it shakes out. Some issues with the GXP BB but the overall ride is pretty nice. Plus it rides so much better to and from the dirt, really like a cross bike. Weighs about 24.

Yea, got out for a 32 mile ride today, it was very nice. Need to get used to a hardtail and setup the Reba correctly, but other than that it was great!

Lot of Reba setup info in this thread - Reba fine tuning

Yeah, I rode a FS bike all summer and ended up selling it, just never felt right on it. But oh man did I miss the rear shock the first few rides back on a hard tail (it's hella rocky around here).

Get the Wheelset. Not a big fan of Alex but I scored a new/takeoff pair for a pretty cheap. And the Rocket Rons are pretty good to. I can ride these until I feel like upgrading. Of course, true to Alex, even on a new/takeoff the rear hub had issues. And they are centerlock.

I got a wheelset from eBay, WTB Laser Disc and Deore hubs

Looking forward to put together the bike, the fork will be here soon and the wheelset the next week

Has anyone ever seen a 2012 EMD?
I have an RDO and 2012 EMD on order and the RDO is at the dealer waiting, whilst the EMD my dealer says was informed wouldn't arrive until Jan 1st.

I keep checking this thread each time there is a new post hoping to see a 2012 EMD.

    Cheers

    Hi James,

Niner Bikes doesn't use "model years" per say, but here is the next generation of the EMD9 which has a tapered head tube and hydro formed top/down tube. These are in stock and now shipping to dealers.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Brett,
I'd seen the press photos and amazing pics on your site. I appreciate the lack of model years. Perhaps in the absence of model years generation codes or chassis codes as in the car market would be easier for discussions.

Those photos give a good interpretation of how it would look thank you.

Any other IRL photos members have I'll be keen to see and will be sure to post some when I have mine and my wife's bikes rolling.

    Cheers everyone

    James

PS: how great is it that Niner representatives take the time to help the community here?

    Hi James,

Good ideas. We can tell when any frame was made by the serial number. Serial numbers indicate production date years and the week they were made. The first set of numbers is the year the frame was built. The next set is the production week. For instance, 11190123 was produced in 2011 the 19th week. 9490123 was produced in 2009 the 49th week. For a list of weeks, this link is a great resource. Week Numbers for 2011

I posted these on another thread, but here is Aaron's DJ bike. The black EMD9 looks really good as well.

In the end we're just bike geeks like you and we live to ride! It's pretty fun to geek out with certain builds, ride different parts, etc.. This is a great time to be riding bikes! Now only of our snow would melt. I can only ride studded Nokians for so long...

    Have a great weekend!

My newly built Niner EMD size medium. Running full Sram X-9 with Shimano SLX brakes, Suntour Epicon 100mm fork with 15mm front axle, BWW wheelset, crank brothers 3 pedals and a few other misc items. Current weight running tubless is 26lbs on the button. Was shooting for 23-24lbs but based on money spent I'm happing with the 26lb.

    EMD Moondust

Here is my EMD. My first Niner was a Sir 9. Loved it, but too flexy when putting down the hammer. Went a one 9 which is my current SS. I felt I needed a geared Niner that would be a good transition from the road race season to the trail. The only problem I had was, that the EMD was too stiff under my buttocks. Everything else I loved. So after almost hitting the "order" button at Jenson for a new 2011 air 9, I said how else can I make this bike comfortable but keep the stiffnes? Use shim, easton EC90 zero post 27.2

    Thanks. It's a medium.

This morning had his/her maiden trip. Was kind of wet, but had a blast. Fast, great cornering, easy climbing. No regrets what so ever about changing to a 29er.

    Nice build Laxcat,
let me know how you like the 29'er Rocket Ron's. I have Racing Ralphs on all my bikes and had a set of Nobby Nic's on one of my 26" bikes. I'm glad Schwalbe has expanded their 29" range.

Here is my EMD 9. I just finished the build this weekend, but I've had the frame since the end of November. Looking forward to finally getting out on the trails.

    Specs:

let me know how you like the 29'er Rocket Ron's.
I only have a few rides on the Rocket Ron's but they seem pretty good. This is my first 29er and first tubeless set up so I dont have any similar tires to compare them with. I live in Virginia so the trails are mostly hardpacked with rocks and roots. The tires seems to roll fast and offer plenty of grip, I only had a few times where I slid the front.

I did have a real hard time getting the tires to seal up tubeless, the sidewalls have alot of small holes so it took alot of sealant and messing with them to get them all sealed.

Yep it's a root beer. It's been hanging on the wall in our team's shop for about 3 years so I decided to give her a home.

how durable is this frame for heavy riders (230+) ? i mainly do light trails nothing too technical. just wondering the overall preformance of the bike for a heavier rider.

Mine has held up pretty well so far. I'm 270 and I ride pretty technical trails with smallish drops.

Not very long, since November. I've put quite a few miles on it but nothing like I will this spring and summer.
